Eve was bored. It had been fun for a while to get to bash the trees apart, but now she was just guarding while the others built something. There weren't even any zombies to beat. She had figured that mindless monsters would be more accommodating than other types when she wanted to fight them, but apparently not. She pouted silently by the side, crossing her arms and leaning against her hammer, whose head was planted firmly enough in the dirt that her weight didn't knock it over, though it did lean slightly.
After setting up a sort of cone of trees around each of the two that were central to their new camp, Michael suggested that they move into the city to search for supplies.
Eve perked up, then grabbed her hammer and rushed forward.
"I want to go!" she declared, as though anyone had had any doubt. "I want to kill things!"
"We should all go," Luke decided. Eve smiled. That was a good idea. Of course it was, after all, it was Luke's.
"We aren't leaving someone to guard the camp?" Zoe asked, scoffing. "What kind of plan is that?"
"I don't think we need to," Michael said slowly. And he was right. What cracked ribs were floating around in Zoe's stomach that she thought they needed to stay? It was just these weak pins, anyway. Even if they did overrun the place, what did it matter? The logs would be simple enough to put back into place, and they hadn't done anything else yet. The pit for the fire was dug, but it wasn't like they had anything down there yet. They had just gotten here earlier, and had been occupied with other things. Besides, what would be the point in starting it again? They didn't have anything to cook, and they were leaving anyway, so no one needed to keep warm either.
Also, Eve was pretty sure that she had learned something about this situation as a guardian. Something like, "Don't lead your master into a flare that was set up in the middle of a monster infested forest or else they'll probably die."
Yeah, it had to have been something along those lines. Eve didn't really care for the actual wording, it suited her purposes well enough anyway. And besides, a swarm wouldn't be all bad, because then she would get to kill them. Well, maybe not all of them, but a lot. Hopefully.
But they were going to leave and go out into the city, the place where there was supposed to be more zombies. That was good. Eve smiled, hefted her hammer, and... waited.
The others sat discussing where in the city they should go for a while, and Eve thought it must've been at least an hour by the time they were done. She didn't know exactly. School uniform specifically forbid personal devices, whether they were watches or compressed computation series. Eve had never had any sort of compressed computation device, because she had never wanted one or had to use one, but most people got their own at a very young age, which Eve thought was stupid. It would just make people lazy and compliant. Ergo, less likely to fight her if confronted directly without their pride on the line.
They were pretty neat, Luke said, but also not necessary. Being able to contact other people was a useful enough feature, but you had to get a special model or modify one of them if you didn't want people to be able to track you. There were built-in map features and "family" features, which together basically acted as a cracked skull positioning unit. You could use it to see where you were, but other people could also use it to see where you were.
By the time they set off, Eve was very bored and impatient. To be fair, though, she had been bored and impatient a lot recently, and had learned to live with it decently well. On the way back to the gate, she swung her hammer listlessly, wandering along by the group's side.
There wasn't even a single zombie. Not even one thing to kill. What was the point of the apocalypse if she didn't get to kill things?
Eve hummed a little tune, but then paused. Something wasn't right.
Eagerly, she looked ahead, straining her eyesight to see it.
Yes, it was. Another one of the big ones.
Eve whooped, and charged forward.
