The city of Ashveil smelled of river-mud and tallow candles when I arrived, and it smelled of the same things when everything fell apart. Some cities have a talent for consistency.
I had come to sell ink. Genuine lampblack compound, double-rendered, which I mixed myself in a process I had copied out of a Veldrani trade manual during my years in the King's archive. It was good ink. Better than anything the local scribes were producing. I had a buyer — a monastery just north of the city walls, Brother Clement, who had been corresponding with me for two months via a mutual contact in the merchant quarter.
What I did not have was a place to sleep.
The Amber Flagon was the only inn in the Tanner's Quarter that accepted payment in trade, which was fortunate, because I had very little coin. I traded two vials of ink for three nights in a room with a window that faced an alley and a mattress that smelled strongly of someone's previous illness. It was, relative to certain other places I had slept, acceptable.
I arrived at nightfall on the fourteenth of Coldmonth.
Duke Osric Caell died before morning.
I did not know the Duke. I knew of him, in the way that any literate man in Vaelthorn knew of him — he was the lord of Ashveil Province, a veteran of the Orryn border campaigns, a generous patron of the Church and a notably harsh administrator of law. He had a reputation for order. Streets clean, taxes collected, dissent quietly managed. The kind of lord that kings prefer and common people endure.
His wife was Lady Seraphine Caell, née Aldrath, of the southern house Aldrath. I knew less of her. She appeared in official records as a signature beside her husband's on property documents and charitable grants. She had no political history of her own. She was, as far as the records were concerned, an extension of her husband's will.
I learned this afterward, of course.
That night, I learned nothing. I ate a bowl of barley soup in the Flagon's common room, listened to two draymen argue about a disputed load of timber, and went to sleep.
I woke to bells.
Not chapel bells. These were the short, hard, urgent bells of the city guard — the alarm pattern, three-and-one, three-and-one, that I recognized from my years in the capital. Something had happened. Something that required official presence.
I did not get up. It was not my city, not my problem. I pulled my travel coat over my shoulders and went back to sleep.
I learned what had happened in the morning, from the innkeeper's wife, who told me while she wiped down the tables with an aggression that suggested she found the news personally offensive.
Duke Caell was dead.
Found in his war chamber — the private room where he kept his maps and correspondence, connected to his personal quarters by an interior passage — with a letter-knife buried between his ribs. His wife had been found standing over the body. She had said nothing. Not a word, not a cry, not a protestation of innocence. The guards who arrived said she simply stood there with the knife in her hand — she had pulled it from the wound, apparently, which anyone with half a brain would tell you was the worst thing she could have done, though whether she had done it to help him or out of some other impulse was the question now being asked loudly in every corner of Ashveil.
She was in the Citadel's custody. She had still not spoken.
"Mad with grief," the innkeeper's wife said, wringing her cloth. "Or mad with guilt, more like."
I ate my bread and said nothing.
But something about it sat wrongly in my mind — the particular way a thing sits when you have spent years reading documents and have trained yourself to notice what is absent rather than what is present.
She had pulled the knife from the wound.
Why?

The city spent the morning fracturing along the usual lines. In the market quarter, people spoke of Lady Caell with the tight sympathy reserved for those already assumed guilty — poor woman, must have lost her senses, terrible thing, what will become of the estate. In the Church district, the tone was more judgmental. The Caell family were significant donors; the clergy had a financial interest in their reputation remaining intact, which meant that whoever had committed this crime needed to be someone else.
In the Tanner's Quarter, nobody particularly cared. Lords killed each other all the time. It was the city guard's problem.
I finished my business with Brother Clement — who, incidentally, was so distracted by the news of the Duke's death that he paid me more than we had agreed, which I noted and did not correct — and I was preparing to leave Ashveil entirely when I was stopped on the Millbridge by a man I did not know who clearly knew me.
He was tall. Not in the way that fighters are tall — wide and planted. He was tall in the way that certain trees are tall: narrow, upright, with a stillness that suggested deep roots. He wore gray, no insignia, a traveling sword on his hip that was not a soldier's sword. His face was angular, watchful, with eyes so dark they absorbed light rather than reflecting it.
He stopped directly in my path and said, "You are Aldric Voss. Formerly the King's Third Scribe."
It was not a question.
"Formerly," I agreed.
"I am Harrow," he said. "I have been sent to investigate the death of Duke Caell. I require a scribe."
"I am no longer in service."
"No," he said. "But you have excellent handwriting and a demonstrated ability to keep confidential information confidential, until it suits you not to. Which is exactly what this situation requires." He paused. "You will be paid in coin. Actual coin. I am told you are currently accepting trade."
I looked at him for a long moment. The bridge was busy around us — carts, foot traffic, a woman carrying a basket of salt fish that made the whole vicinity smell like the sea.
"Who sent you?" I asked. "The King?"
"The King's office," Harrow said, which was the diplomatic way of saying: someone who reports to the King but does not want the King's name attached to this. "The situation requires discretion."
"The Duke's wife," I said slowly, "has not spoken. That is the situation requiring discretion."
Something shifted in his expression. Not surprise — he was not a man who surprised easily. More like recalibration. "You have been in the city less than a day."
"I listen well," I said. "It is my trade."
Harrow looked at me for another moment. Then he stepped aside from the center of the bridge and gestured toward the Citadel with one hand, the way you might gesture a colleague toward a chair.
"Then listen," he said, "to this."

The war chamber was still sealed when we arrived, but Harrow had authority to open it. He had authority over a great deal, it turned out — the city guard stood aside when he entered rooms, the Citadel's household staff became suddenly, carefully helpful, and even the high steward of the Caell household, a severe man named Aldous Prent who had clearly decided that his primary loyalty was to the estate's future rather than the truth of its present, spoke to Harrow with the particular tone that people use when they are afraid.
The war chamber was a middle-sized room on the second floor of the Citadel's private wing. Stone walls, tapestries of old campaign maps, a desk large enough to hold an army's correspondence, and a cold fireplace. The smell of blood was still present, though the body had been removed. Dark staining on the floor, near the fireplace. A fallen ink pot. Several documents scattered across the desk, some blood-spattered.
I stood in the doorway and looked at all of it without touching anything.
"What do you see?" Harrow asked, behind me.
"Someone left quickly," I said. "The ink pot is on its side — it did not fall from the desk, someone knocked it. The documents on the desk are disordered, but not randomly. Someone was searching through them. And —" I stepped carefully into the room, crouching near the desk. "This stack, here. The one with the least blood on it. It has been replaced."
"Replaced?"
"The pages are not in the original order. You can tell by the ink flow — a writer's pages have a physical progression, the pressure and depth of the strokes change as the hand tires. These pages are interleaved incorrectly. Someone removed some pages and put the rest back without reading them carefully enough to reconstruct the original sequence."
Harrow stood behind me, quiet.
"What kind of documents were these?" I asked.
"Correspondence," he said. "We do not yet know with whom. Some letters are missing. The Duke's steward claims not to know their contents."
I stood up and looked at the fireplace. Cold, but recently swept. "What was burned?"
"Unknown."
"Then we have," I said, "a murder that may not have been committed by the person holding the weapon, missing correspondence, a swept fireplace, and a witness who will not speak." I turned to look at Harrow. "You need more than a scribe."
"I know what I need," Harrow said. "I need to understand why she will not speak." He paused. "I have interviewed Lady Caell twice. She is not mad. She is not grief-stricken in the way that produces silence. She is —" He seemed to search for the word. "Decided."
"Decided to be silent."
"Yes."
I looked back at the war chamber. At the empty space where a man had died, and the careful disorder of what remained.
"Who benefits from the Duke's death?" I asked.
"That," Harrow said, "is the third question. After who killed him, and why she will not tell us."
"What is the second question?"
Harrow was quiet for a moment. When he spoke, his voice was the same as it had been — flat, controlled, precise — but something underneath it had shifted.
"Whether," he said, "the Duke deserved it."
