Chapter 43 - Chapter 8: Construction Mode

The idea had spiraled.

Then escalated.

Then somehow received official approval.

At exactly 6:00 AM on a Saturday, Class 1-A stood in the courtyard staring at a stack of delivery crates.

Fog machines.

Industrial foam sheets.

LED lighting strips.

Paint drums.

Magnetic locking mechanisms.

Steel paneling.

Denki looked at the mountain of supplies and whispered:

"…We're actually doing this."

Behind them, faculty stood like supervisors at a mildly unhinged construction site.

Shota Aizawa, hands in pockets, expression exhausted already.

Midnight leaning casually against a pillar, amused.

Mount Lady stretching dramatically, already half in hero mode.

And further back—

Flames flickered subtly along the shoulder of Enji Todoroki.

Endeavor's voice was blunt.

"You have twelve hours."

Denki blinked.

"Twelve—?!"

"To prepare," Endeavor clarified. "We will be patrolling the surrounding district."

Aizawa added flatly, "You will not leave designated areas. The front gate boundary is the furthest limit."

Nezu, perched on a crate, smiled.

"We've coordinated pro-hero patrol routes so the surrounding block is secured. No villain interference. No civilian confusion."

Mount Lady cracked her knuckles.

"If anyone does interrupt? We handle it."

Midnight smirked.

"Consider it a protective perimeter for your little horror carnival."

Kirishima's eyes sparkled.

"This is the MANLIEST thing we've ever done."

Bakugou rolled his shoulders.

"Then let's move."

Phase 1: Structural Build

Metal panels were carried into selected hallways.

Not permanent damage.

Temporary reinforcement plating.

Magnetized clamps held them in place over existing walls.

Todoroki froze anchor bolts into position with precise ice placement.

Kirishima hardened and held beams steady while Sero wrapped industrial tape along edges.

Denki wired LED strips through ceiling grooves.

Mina supervised paint application like a chaotic art director.

"More industrial red! Less ketchup red!"

Outside, pro heroes launched into motion.

Mount Lady leapt across rooftops, scanning the district.

Midnight coordinated comms from street level.

Endeavor streaked through the sky in controlled bursts of flame.

Aizawa stayed mobile along perimeter routes — silent, watchful.

If any villain activity flared up?

It ended quickly.

The city would not interrupt this.

Phase 2: Atmosphere

The fog machines arrived mid-morning.

Denki unboxed one like it was sacred.

"We're using water-based vapor only," Todoroki said calmly.

"Obviously," Denki replied.

They tested one in the training hallway.

A low red glow filled the corridor.

Mist crawled along the floor.

Kaito stood in it, staring.

"…He's going to lose his mind."

Mina squealed.

"IT'S PERFECT."

They adjusted airflow so the fog stayed low and dramatic.

Red warning lights flickered intermittently.

Speakers were hidden behind vent grates for subtle ambient sound.

Heartbeat audio.

Distant metallic clanks.

Soft recorded whispers.

All safe.

All controlled.

All immersive.

Phase 3: The GrabPack

Kirishima and Mei from the support course collaborated on the build.

Dual wrist-mounted cuffs.

Retractable cable system.

Magnetized foam hands.

Grip strength adjustable.

Non-lethal.

Non-damaging.

Denki powered the retraction motors.

Todoroki stress-tested freeze tolerance.

Bakugou stress-tested durability by blasting near it.

It survived.

Kaito slipped it on last.

He aimed.

Fired.

The red foam hand shot forward and latched onto a steel plate.

He pulled.

It retracted smoothly.

The class went silent.

"…He's going to love this," Kaito said quietly.

Phase 4: Monsters

Foam sculpting.

Latex layering.

Paint detailing.

Mina and Tokoyami handled shadow effects.

Uraraka carefully suspended lightweight figures from ceiling tracks.

They created:

Lily Lovebraids

A partial Prototype frame silhouette

Custom moving wall arms

Glowing eye vents

Nothing too terrifying.

Just enough to trigger recognition.

Denki programmed simple motion triggers so figures shifted slightly when someone passed.

Bakugou secretly improved one with explosive pop confetti that would trigger harmlessly.

"Not scary," he muttered. "Just dramatic."

Phase 5: The Outside Route

The courtyard was transformed into a checkpoint zone.

Crates stacked strategically.

Fake warning tape.

Puzzle lockboxes hidden beneath benches.

The training yard became "Factory Grounds."

Red banners hung between poles.

A fog curtain at the entrance.

Even the front gate had a coded latch puzzle that required teamwork to open.

Pro heroes remained in motion.

Mount Lady intercepted a purse snatcher three blocks away.

Endeavor stopped a robbery attempt in under thirty seconds.

Midnight handled crowd redirection when curious civilians asked about construction noises.

Aizawa stood atop the main building roof at sunset.

Watching.

Listening.

Making sure nothing — and no one — approached without being seen.

Evening — Completion

By nightfall, U.A. didn't look like U.A.

It looked like:

An abandoned toy factory.

Red haze drifted through corridors.

Metal panels gleamed under dim lights.

Puzzle notes were placed carefully along the trail.

Each handwritten in a slightly distorted font.

Each clue leading forward.

Toward the final door.

The common room.

Now hidden behind a massive steel façade labeled:

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

Behind that door?

The fort.

Crimson and gold.

Anime references woven subtly into decor.

Root beer chilling.

Cake prepped.

Everyone stood in the transformed courtyard, exhausted.

Paint-streaked.

Sweaty.

Victorious.

Kirishima raised a fist.

"This is legendary."

Denki lay on the ground dramatically.

"If he doesn't cry I will."

Kaito stared at the building.

His voice was quiet.

"He's never had something like this."

Behind them, Aizawa approached.

"It's secure," he said simply.

Endeavor landed nearby, flames dimming.

"Perimeter is clear."

Midnight smiled softly.

"No villain disruptions."

Mount Lady stretched.

"You kids better appreciate this."

Nezu appeared beside them.

"This," he said warmly, "is what community looks like."

Meanwhile — Ren

Ren walked down the dorm hallway.

He paused.

"…Why does it smell like paint?"

He frowned slightly.

From somewhere deep within the building—

A faint mechanical hum echoed.

Like something powering up.

And outside the gates—

That same black vehicle slowed again.

Parked for just a second too long.

Then drove away.
