Chapter 27 - Midnight Pacts and Shadowed Crowns

Jay's POV

I stood up from the cafeteria table, the heavy silence of the room pressing against my ears. Keifer's hand was still halfway to his mouth, a piece of bread forgotten as he watched me.

His eyes, usually so sharp and predatory, were softened by exhaustion and the lingering hum of adrenaline.

"Where are you going?" he asked, his voice rough. He started to push his chair back, the metal legs scraping harshly against the stone floor.

I pressed a hand firmly on his shoulder, feeling the heat of his skin through his shirt. "Stay. Eat. You've done enough fighting for one night, Keifer."

"Jay—"

"I'll be right back," I promised, leaning down so only he could hear me. "I just need to find Zein. She shouldn't be alone right now. Trust me?"

He searched my face for a second, his jaw tightening, before he finally let out a defeated sigh and sank back into his seat. "Fine. If you're not back, I'm coming to find you."

"Deal," I whispered with a small smile.

I slipped out of the cafeteria, my boots silent on the stone floors. I knew where she'd be. The rooftop garden—the only place where the air didn't smell like decay.

I watched Ace's silhouette vanish into the gloom of the stairwell, leaving a heavy, vibrating silence behind. My heart was still hammering against my ribs—not from fear this time, but from the sheer weight of what I'd just witnessed. The "Supremo," the man who held the life and death of every student in his hands, had just crumbled for a girl.

I waited a few beats, making sure he was truly gone, before I pushed the iron door open fully. The hinges groaned, a lonely sound in the night air.

Zein was still sitting on that stone bench, looking like a statue carved from ice and grief. Her fingers were pressed to her lips, right where he had kissed her.

"He's a lot to take in, isn't he?" I said softly, stepping into the moonlight.

Zein jumped, her hand flying to her side as if reaching for a weapon she didn't have. When she saw it was me, she slumped, her shoulders dropping an inch. "Jay. How much did you see?"

"Enough," I admitted, walking over and sitting on the edge of the bench. I didn't push. I just sat there, letting her feel my presence. "He loves you, Zein. In his own twisted, bulletproof way."

Zein let out a shaky breath, her eyes fixed on the dark horizon of the school grounds. "He says he's my shield. He says he'll burn this place down. But Jay... how do I trust a man who stands on a balcony while people are bleeding? How do I know he isn't just another part of the game?"

I looked at her, seeing the reflection of my own past doubts in her eyes. "You don't. That's the terrifying part. Trusting someone in Hell University is like handing them the gun and hoping they don't pull the trigger."

"I don't know if I can do it," she whispered.

I took a deep breath. It was time to tell her. "Can I tell you a secret? About Keifer?"

She turned to look at me, curious despite her own turmoil.

"When I first met Keifer, he didn't love me," I said, the memory bitter and sweet at the same time. "He had a plan. He wanted to make me fall in love with him just to get revenge on my older brother, Jare. I was just a pawn in his game of 'eye for an eye.'"

Zein's eyes widened. "What?"

"Yeah," I nodded. "He played the part perfectly. Every smile, every 'protective' moment... it was all calculated. He wanted to break Jare by breaking me."

Zein's POV

I stared at Jay, the shock momentarily dulling the sting of Ace's kiss. Keifer? The boy who looked at Jay like she was the only light left in the world? It seemed impossible.

"What did you do?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "When you found out?"

Jay's expression hardened, a flash of the fierce girl she was beneath the kindness. "I was furious. I felt like my entire world was a lie. So, the moment I confirmed it, I didn't cry. I walked up to him and I punched him. Hard. Right across that pretty face he used to trick me."

A small, surprised laugh escaped me. "Good for you."

"He didn't fight back," Jay continued. "He just stood there and took it. And then... he begged. He told me that somewhere along the way, the lie became his truth. He actually fell for me. He asked for a second chance."

"And you gave it to him?"

"Not easily," Jay said, a small smile playing on her lips. "I made him earn it. I made him prove, every single day, that I wasn't a mission anymore. I made him earn my forgiveness through blood and loyalty. And now? I'd trust him with my life. Because I saw the man he chose to be when the mask fell off."

She leaned closer, her eyes searching mine. "Ace is wearing a mask, Zein. He has to. But you saw what was underneath for a second tonight. Don't throw away the man because you hate the mask."

I looked away, the confusion in my chest still swirling. "Maybe. But my family... they're not here to help me figure this out. I'm doing this alone."

Jay shifted, her tone turning more personal. "You're not alone. You have us. And families... they're complicated. Even outside these walls."

"Tell me about yours," I said, wanting to escape my own thoughts. "Beyond Percy."

Jay leaned back, looking up at the stars. "Well, you know Percy, my stepbrother. He's... a handful. Then Jare, my elder brother—the one Keifer hated, but he's kind.My dad is stern but he cares. And my stepmom... honestly, she loves me like I'm her own. She's the one who made the house feel like a home after my real mom died." Her voice softened on that last part. "I still miss her. My real mom, I mean. Sometimes I wonder what she'd think of me being here."

I felt a pang of sympathy. "She'd be proud of how brave you are."

"What about you, Zein?" Jay asked softly. "What's the story of the Shion family?"

I felt the weight of the name Shion settle over me like a heavy velvet cloak. "It's not just a family, Jay. It's a structure," I began, my voice steady. "I told Ace this once. There's my father—the one who built the legacy, who treats life like a game of chess".

I paused, a strange ache in my chest. "Then there's Samantha and Allison. My sisters. But the truth is... I haven't even met them yet."

Jay blinked, confused. "You've never met your own sisters?"

"They were gone before I was old enough to know them," I explained, looking at the shadows of the garden. "Samantha was a student here once—a legend, they say. She was the rebellious one who knew the school's secrets long before me. Allison... she's always been a ghost in the background. My family kept us apart, kept their lives separate from mine. I grew up with their names and their reputations, but never their faces. I was the one pushed to the front to protect a legacy I didn't even understand."

"In Hell University, being a Shion means you're born into a war you didn't start," I added quietly. "I'm looking for them in these hallways, in the files, in the whispers of the rebels. I feel like I'm chasing ghosts."

The air grew stiller, the distant sounds of the school fading into a heavy, expectant hush.

"Jay," I said, checking my watch. The digital numbers glowed in the dark.

11:59 PM.

We both went silent. The wind picked up, whistling through the garden's overgrown vines. I looked at Jay—my friend, my mirror in so many ways. We had survived the Board, the "Bloody Night," and the betrayals of the men we loved.

Then, the numbers flickered.

12:00 AM.

"Happy birthday, Jay-jay," I whispered, the words feeling like a prayer.

"Happy birthday, Zein," she replied, her voice thick with emotion.

Without a word, we both leaned in, wrapping each other in a fierce, tight hug. It wasn't just a birthday wish; it was a pact. Two girls born on the same day, trapped in the same nightmare, promising each other that we would see the sun rise on the next one.

In that moment, the Architect and his "Apex" theories didn't matter. The Board didn't matter. It was just us—two survivors, one year older, and ready for whatever war tomorrow would bring.
