[Flashback when I was 11 years old…]
I still remember that happening a few months since that fall down the stairs from that old shrine. My family and I were on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean Sea. Luckily for us, it was a discounted fare for a family of five like us for the holidays; unlucky for us, it was the infamous Carnival Cruise Ship.
Why, you might ask.
Well, it was the time when she sank, and it slanted on one side. The furniture fell on one side, and I remembered our Cambodia, Phnom Penh native mother, Sray, was holding on while our father was holding on to me, Rai, and Mai. And then, the deck started to be filled with seawater. We scrambled to the openings for safety, but I slipped and fell into the water.
"Rathanak!" my father screamed, trying to reach out to me with his hand.
But it was too late.
Luckily, I managed to swim my way out of the cruise ship as the Invisible Force held my lungs from being filled with water.
Later, in the middle of the cool night, I swam to the coast of the Giglio Island nearby. I got out, climbed on the rocks of the coast while coughing up a lot of seawater from my lungs, and sat down on a big rock while shivering mildly against the cold wind and watching the ship sink on one side.
A couple of minutes later, locals from the island saw my presence on the rocks and helped out by taking me to their local parish church so a priest would report me as missing. I was given some Italian soup, a few slices of Neopolitan Pizza, and some water and coffee.
The next morning, the authorities from the mainland picked me up, and I was back at the port. I still remember the looks on my family's faces when they saw that I was still alive. We embraced each other very tightly while the priest from Giglio Island did the sign of the cross on the miracle.
We eventually went to Rome by train to forget the happening and then jumped to Venice 2 days after that.
That time was the second time this Invisible Force saved my life from death.
