Chapter 2 - THE TEMPLE OF SHADOWS

Abhishek stood frozen at the kitchen door. His heart was pounding so loudly that he could hear it echoing in his ears. The dim yellow light hanging from the ceiling flickered slowly, making the shadows in the kitchen move strangely along the walls.

For a moment, Abhishek could not understand what he was looking at.

The kitchen floor was covered with spilled grains and a broken steel plate. But that was not what made him scream.

Standing near the window was a tall, dark figure.

It was not a normal shadow. It looked like a person, but its body seemed to be made entirely of darkness. Its shape kept shifting slightly, as if it were made of smoke.

Abhishek felt his legs trembling. He wanted to run, but his body refused to move.

The shadow slowly turned its head toward him.

For a second, Abhishek thought he saw two faint glowing eyes staring directly at him.

Then suddenly the light bulb burst with a loud pop, and the kitchen was plunged into complete darkness.

Abhishek screamed again and ran backward into the hallway.

"Grandmother! Mother!" he shouted in panic.

But the house was silent.

His breathing became heavy as fear tightened around his chest. He quickly ran toward the room where he had been sleeping with his grandmother.

The door was slightly open.

"Grandmother?" he called out softly.

No answer.

He pushed the door open and looked inside.

The bed was empty.

The blanket was still there, slightly crumpled, but his grandmother was nowhere to be seen.

A cold wave of fear spread through Abhishek's body.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Just then, he heard the main door creak open.

Abhishek turned quickly and saw his father entering the house.

His father looked surprised to see him awake.

"Abhishek? Why are you shouting at this hour?" his father asked.

Abhishek ran toward him.

"Father! There was someone in the kitchen… a dark figure… and grandmother is missing!"

His father frowned.

"What nonsense are you talking about?" he said sternly. "Your grandmother went to the neighbor's house a while ago."

Abhishek froze.

"B-but… I saw something in the kitchen," he whispered.

His father walked toward the kitchen and switched on another light.

The kitchen looked completely normal.

There was no broken plate.

No spilled grains.

And no dark shadow.

Abhishek stared in confusion.

Had he imagined everything?

His father looked back at him with irritation.

"You've been having too many nightmares lately," he said. "Stop thinking about that cursed temple."

The moment his father said those words, Abhishek felt a chill run down his spine.

Was the shadow connected to the temple?

That night, Abhishek could not sleep again.

He kept thinking about what he had seen in the kitchen.

The glowing eyes.

The strange shadow.

And the feeling that something was watching him.

The next morning, Abhishek met Ayush near the village well.

Ayush immediately noticed the tired look on his face.

"Bro, you look terrible," Ayush said. "Did you not sleep?"

Abhishek told him everything about the shadow he had seen in the kitchen.

Ayush's face turned pale.

"I told you not to go near that temple," he said nervously. "Something must have followed us."

Abhishek shook his head.

"No. I don't think it followed us," he said slowly.

"I think… it already knew me."

Ayush looked even more scared.

"What do you mean?"

Abhishek lowered his voice.

"I think whatever lives in that temple is connected to my grandfather."

Ayush gulped nervously.

"Bro… please stop talking like that."

But Abhishek's mind was already racing with questions.

What if the temple was not just haunted?

What if something inside it had been waiting for years?

Waiting for him?

Later that day, Abhishek decided to search through his grandfather's old belongings.

His grandfather's room had remained almost untouched since his disappearance.

Dust covered most of the furniture.

The air inside the room felt strangely heavy.

Abhishek slowly opened an old wooden chest near the bed.

Inside were several old books, prayer beads, and handwritten notes.

One of the books immediately caught his attention.

It was wrapped in a faded red cloth.

Abhishek carefully opened it.

The pages were extremely old, and the writing looked ancient.

Most of the text was written in Sanskrit.

But one page had a sentence written in Hindi.

Abhishek read it slowly.

"The temple at the entrance is not a place of worship. It is a prison."

His hands began to shake.

A prison?

Prison for what?

Before he could think further, a folded paper slipped out of the book and fell onto the floor.

Abhishek picked it up.

It was a rough map of the village.

But something strange was drawn on it.

There was a hidden path leading from the jungle behind the temple to somewhere underground.

At the bottom of the map, his grandfather had written a warning:

"Do not open the door beneath the temple."

Abhishek's heart started beating faster.

A hidden door?

Under the temple?

That meant there was something beneath it.

Something his grandfather had discovered.

Something that might explain why he disappeared.

That evening, Abhishek went to meet Ayush again.

He showed him the map.

Ayush stared at it with wide eyes.

"You're not thinking about going there… right?" Ayush asked nervously.

Abhishek looked directly at him.

"Yes."

Ayush immediately shook his head.

"No way. Absolutely not."

But Abhishek spoke firmly.

"If we want to know what happened to my grandfather, we have to find that hidden door."

Ayush hesitated.

He was terrified of the temple.

But Abhishek was his best friend.

Finally, he sighed.

"Fine," he said reluctantly.

"But we go during the daytime."

Abhishek shook his head.

"No," he said quietly.

"We go tonight."

Ayush nearly screamed.

"ARE YOU CRAZY?"

Abhishek pointed to the map.

"The hidden path only appears after sunset," he explained.

Ayush covered his face with his hands.

"This is the worst idea you've ever had."

But deep down, he knew there was no stopping Abhishek now.

That night, the two boys quietly left the village.

The moon was hidden behind thick clouds.

The jungle around the temple looked darker than ever.

Every sound of rustling leaves made Ayush jump in fear.

"Bro… I have a bad feeling about this," he whispered.

Abhishek said nothing.

They finally reached the back side of the temple.

Just like the map had shown, a narrow path appeared between the trees.

The path led toward the temple wall.

Abhishek pushed aside a thick bush.

Behind it was a small stone staircase leading downward.

Ayush's voice trembled.

"Please tell me we are not going down there."

Abhishek lit a small flashlight.

"We are."

They slowly walked down the staircase.

The air became colder with every step.

At the bottom, they found a massive stone door covered with strange symbols.

The same symbols Abhishek had seen in his grandfather's book.

Ayush whispered fearfully.

"Maybe we should leave."

But before Abhishek could reply…

They heard something.

A deep, heavy breathing sound coming from behind the door.

Both boys froze.

The door slowly began to shake.

And from the darkness behind it…

they heard a low whisper.

"Abhishek…"

The flashlight slipped from his hand.

Ayush looked at him in horror.

"How does it know your name?" he whispered.

But Abhishek already knew the answer.

Whatever was behind that door…

had been waiting for him.

For years.

And now…

it was finally awake.
