Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Man Who Already Died

Darkness.

Not the peaceful kind.

The suffocating, collapsing kind.

Kai Ren couldn't breathe.

He felt warm liquid spread beneath his back.

Blood.

His own.

Above him stood Victor Hale, perfectly dressed even at midnight, staring down as if observing damaged merchandise.

"You were valuable, Kai," Victor said calmly. "But you became uncontrollable."

Kai tried to move.

He couldn't.

Neural paralysis drug.

He should've known.

The apartment lights flickered.

His Eternum Online interface glitched in his vision.

A red emergency notification appeared:

FATAL DAMAGE DETECTED

Neural Sync Critical

Activating Origin Protocol…

Victor frowned. "What is that?"

Kai smiled weakly.

"You shouldn't have… touched the Origin Core…"

The world fractured like broken glass.

Sound distorted.

Pain vanished.

Kai gasped.

He bolted upright.

His heart slammed violently against his ribs.

White ceiling.

Fan spinning lazily.

Morning sunlight.

His old apartment.

He stared at his hands.

No blood.

No bullet wound.

No weakness.

His phone vibrated beside him.

Date: March 3rd, 2045.

His breath stopped.

Three years ago.

One week before Eternum Online's launch.

His fingers trembled.

"…I'm back."

Memories flooded him.

Tournaments.

Luna's smile.

Victor's betrayal.

His own death.

He stood and walked to the mirror.

Same younger face.

No scars.

No fame.

No enemies.

Yet.

He slowly exhaled.

"Then I'll rewrite it."

Seven days later.

Launch Day.

The world shut down to log in.

Kai placed the neural helmet over his head.

The startup sound echoed.

Welcome to Eternum Online.

Light swallowed him.

He stood in a vast silver chamber — Character Creation Hall.

In the past timeline, he had chosen Assassin.

This time…

He closed his eyes.

He remembered the hidden quest.

The broken statue behind the northern cathedral.

The blood ritual.

The forbidden trigger.

He smiled faintly.

"Same path. Faster climb."

Character Name: NoctisReign

Class Selection Screen appeared.

Warrior

Mage

Ranger

Assassin

Cleric

Kai ignored them.

He stabbed his own palm with the creation dagger.

Blood dropped onto the floor.

System error flashed.

Hidden Condition Met

Origin Trace Detected

Shadow Path Unlocked

The hall darkened.

A distorted voice whispered:

"You have already died once."

Kai didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Accept Fate Again?

"Yes."

Pain exploded through his nervous system.

His vision turned black.

When light returned—

He stood cloaked in living shadow.

Class Acquired: Shadow Reclaimer

Different.

Not Shadow Sovereign.

This wasn't the same timeline.

This class…

Evolved.

He checked stats.

Every value was 20% higher than starting average.

He laughed softly.

"So it changed with me."

Hours later.

Beginner Forest.

Players struggled against wolves.

Kai moved like a ghost.

He dodged before attacks launched.

Struck before animations completed.

To other players, he looked impossibly skilled.

To him—

It was repetition.

He had fought these wolves thousands of times in another life.

System notifications stacked rapidly.

Level 5.

Level 7.

Level 10.

A world announcement suddenly echoed.

Player "SilverLune" has cleared Hidden Mini-Boss "Emerald Treant."

Kai froze.

Luna.

He turned toward the direction of the announcement.

Of course.

She always started aggressively.

He hesitated.

In the future timeline, they met months later during a tournament interview.

This time…

He moved.

Fast.

Deep in the forest clearing, a silver-haired avatar streamed live to millions.

Luna dodged gracefully as the Treant slammed roots into the ground.

"Chat, I swear this boss is rigged!" she laughed.

Her movements were clean.

But her HP was low.

She miscalculated the root trajectory.

One hit would kill her.

Kai didn't think.

He stepped out of shadow.

"Down."

She instinctively ducked.

A black blade formed in his hand.

He sliced the Treant's core in one precise motion.

Critical Hit.

Boss defeated.

Silence.

Her stream chat exploded.

"WHO IS THAT???"

Luna blinked at him.

Her avatar's silver eyes shimmered.

"…You just stole my kill."

Kai looked at her properly for the first time in this timeline.

Even in VR—

Her presence felt warm.

In his previous life, he had watched her confession video after his death.

She had cried.

He clenched his fist subtly.

"Sorry," he said calmly. "You were about to die."

She tilted her head.

"I had it handled."

"You didn't."

Their eyes locked.

Tension.

Then she smiled mischievously.

"Then carry me for the next dungeon as apology."

He almost laughed.

She hadn't changed at all.

"Fine."

Chat exploded even harder.

Inside the dungeon, they fought side by side.

Her arrows flowed like silver light.

His shadow strikes complemented her rhythm perfectly.

Too perfectly.

She noticed.

"You fight like you've known me forever."

He paused for half a second.

"…I research top streamers."

She grinned.

"Oh? So I'm famous enough?"

"You were."

He corrected quickly.

"Are."

She laughed softly.

After the dungeon clear, they stood at the exit cliff overlooking the forest sunset.

Wind effects brushed through digital grass.

For a moment, it felt real.

Too real.

She turned off stream mode temporarily.

Her voice softened.

"You're different from other players."

"How?"

"You don't look excited. You look… relieved."

He looked at the horizon.

Because this time…

You're alive.

"…Maybe I just hate losing."

She studied him quietly.

Then stepped closer.

"Then don't lose."

Their avatars stood inches apart.

Sunset reflecting in her silver eyes.

For a dangerous second, he forgot this was virtual.

Forgot revenge.

Forgot death.

He gently stepped back.

"I won't."

System notification appeared privately in his vision:

Temporal Stability Shift: 0.2%

Timeline Divergence Detected

Kai's heart tightened.

He had already changed something.

Good.

Let it change.

This time—

He would win the tournament.

Expose Victor.

Protect Luna.

And uncover what Origin Protocol truly was.

Far away in the real world…

Inside a glass skyscraper office…

Victor Hale stared at a report.

"Strange."

An analyst spoke nervously.

"A new player is clearing content at impossible speed."

Victor adjusted his glasses.

"Name?"

The screen displayed:

NoctisReign.

Victor's expression remained calm.

But something flickered behind his eyes.

"Keep watching him."

Back inside Eternum Online—

Kai stood beside Luna at the cliff.

The wind howled softly.

The game had just begun.

And the man who already died…

Had returned to conquer everything.
