Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: “Void”

Rain fell like a relentless drum, pounding the city streets like a furious heartbeat. Shin Hae-jun stumbled, soaked to the bone, backpack sliding off one shoulder, hair plastered to his forehead. His classmates were ahead, pointing and shouting at the strange, shimmering portal that had suddenly appeared in the middle of the school courtyard.

"What… what is that?!" Kim Jae-hoon asked, wide-eyed, fists clenching.

"I've never seen anything like this!" Park So-yeon shouted, stepping back, rain dripping off her hair.

"Is… is it some kind of experiment?!" another student stammered, eyes wide as the portal's glow stretched and warped the air around them.

Hae-jun reached for Lee Min-ah, the girl he had silently loved for years. But the light engulfed her first, and she was pulled away. Panic bubbled in his chest. Don't leave me… don't leave me… he thought, but the glow swallowed him too.

When the blinding light finally faded, the world around them had changed completely. The sky above was bruised violet, streaked with jagged lightning that sparked without sound. Black stone stretched endlessly beneath their feet, etched with glowing runes that pulsed faintly with every heartbeat. The air smelled metallic, cold, and alive.

A booming voice echoed across the arena, resonating like distant thunder:

"Welcome, chosen ones, to the Arena of Eternal Trial, located in the heart of the Kingdom of Veyra. Manifest your powers!"

Classmates froze, awe and fear battling across their faces. One by one, they stepped forward. Holographic auras erupted — swords of radiant light, shields spinning with energy, fire spiraling into phoenix shapes, ice crystallizing midair, energy whips snapping like lightning.

• Lee Min-ah's aura blazed into a phoenix, flames coiling above her head. "I won't let this world break me!" she shouted.

• Kim Jae-hoon summoned twin crystalline swords, arcs of refracted light streaking across the arena.

• Park So-yeon raised a shield reflecting the violet sky, raindrops bouncing like diamonds.

• Seo Hyun-tae, the class clown, manifested glowing gauntlets sparking with electricity, flipping across the stone. "This is insane!"

• Lee Bo-mi, usually unnoticed, radiated darkness, shadows bending subtly toward her.

The Guardian, robed in starlight, floated above them, silent and unyielding.

Then it was Hae-jun's turn. Palms open, willing power to appear. Nothing. Not a flicker. Not a spark.

Whispers erupted immediately:

"Hae-jun… nothing?"

"He's just a normal human…"

"What a waste… pathetic."

Min-ah's eyes locked on him. Her expression hardened.

"We don't need you here, Hae-jun," she said, voice cold and cutting. "You've been useless since day one. A piece of trash. Maybe we should just feed you to one of the beasts… or leave you to die somewhere."

The words cut him deeper than any blade. Every classmate laughed, whispered, flaunting their powers. Even Lee Bo-mi smirked faintly, amused.

Hae-jun sank to his knees, rain plastering his uniform to his skin. The arena stretched endlessly in all directions. Shadows flickered at the edges. Danger seemed to lurk just beyond vision.

"Why… why did you bring me here at all?!" he shouted, voice cracking. "I don't belong here! I'm nothing!"

No one answered. The Guardian remained calm, silent, and unshakable.

Far away, in the world left behind, chaos erupted. News channels buzzed:

"Breaking: Multiple high school students missing after witnesses report a strange light over [City Name]. Parents are distraught…"

Mothers clutched photos, fathers sat slumped in disbelief, hands shaking.

• Mrs. Lee cried, staring at her daughter's empty bed.

• Mr. Park pounded the walls of his apartment, screaming at the TV showing blurred CCTV of the portal.

• Reporters swarmed the courtyard, cameras capturing shattered signs, wet footprints, and empty classrooms.

No one understood what had happened. No one knew why the students vanished.

Back in the arena, Hae-jun felt a deeper ache. Not only had his friends betrayed him, but the world left behind could do nothing to help. He was completely alone.

A low, trembling growl rose from the shadows. Shapes moved at the edges of the arena. Something dangerous was watching… waiting.

Hae-jun pressed his palms into the stone, teeth gritting, rain pouring down. The laughter and displays of power around him burned like fire into his soul.

Then, a ripple of energy beneath him. The stone floor shifted, and Hae-jun was thrown from the arena.

He fell through darkness, air heavy and cold. Rain and arena sounds faded, replaced by dripping water, rustling leaves, and low growls echoing in the void.

When he landed, it was not soft. Sharp rocks tore through his soaked clothes. He rolled over, gasping. Around him stretched a forest with massive twisted trees, skeletal branches clawing at the sky. Bioluminescent fungi cast pale, eerie glows.

From the darkness, movement stirred. Eyes glimmered. Shapes slithered, crouched, and stalked. A metallic scent of blood and decay filled the air.

"This… this is where they meant to leave me…", Hae-jun whispered. "Alone… like I'm nothing… like trash."

The first creature lunged. Massive, pale-gray skin stretched over rippling muscles, molten amber eyes, claws scraping stone. Its maw opened, teeth jagged and wet. Hae-jun's instincts screamed.

Then more came. Eyes glimmered, dozens of creatures circling. Vines moved like snakes; shadows clung to the trees. Every direction was death.

Hae-jun fought with bare hands and rocks. A claw slashed his shoulder. Another snagged his leg. Blood mixed with rain.

"I… I can't die here… I won't…", he whispered. "I have to survive!"

From the darkness, a faint glow pulsed, almost imperceptibly. It was patient. Watching. Waiting for his fight, his refusal to break, his determination.

Hae-jun took a deep breath, chest heaving, cuts dripping blood. Rage and fear burned in his eyes.

"I don't care if this forest is full of monsters… if this world wants to throw me away… I'll survive. I will survive!"

The forest shifted. Growls rolled like thunder. Eyes glimmered. Shadows stretched. And deep in that darkness, the faint pulsing glow continued… waiting.

To be continued…
