Kei's thumb was idly stroking the smooth iron handle of his cane. He had just opened his mouth to deliver his counter-argument to his impending house arrest when the heavy oak doors of the meeting hall swung open.
Haru hurried into the room, breaking every protocol of a silent servant. She clutched a sealed parchment scroll bearing a highly distinct, official crest.
"Lord Hiashi. Great Elder," Haru announced, her breath slightly elevated. "An ANBU courier just delivered this official missive. It is marked as highest priority."
She approached the dais, respectfully handing the scroll to Hiashi before stepping back to stand in Taihiro's periphery. As she retreated, she cast a fleeting, incredibly complex glance at Kei from the corner of her eye.
Hiashi broke the wax seal. His Byakugan skimmed the contents of the document. Almost instantly, the color drained from his face. Without a word, he passed the scroll to Taihiro.
As the Great Elder read the mandate, a profound, suffocating silence descended upon the hall.
The heavy parchment had effectively acted as a guillotine to their scheme. The document was a direct, irrefutable disruption of their plan to isolate the blind doctor.
After a long, agonizing moment, Taihiro looked up, his singular eye fixing on Kei. The manufactured, grandfatherly warmth was entirely gone, replaced by poorly concealed panic. "What is the meaning of this, Kei? The Third Hokage has personally requisitioned you for a classified village mission."
Perceiving the drastic shift in the atmospheric tension, Kei allowed a bright, innocent smile to blossom across his face. "Ah! I was actually just about to report that development to the council. This morning, following my altercation in the park, Lord Third summoned me to his office. He stated he required my unique clinical expertise for an upcoming operation."
Kei tilted his head, adopting an air of mild surprise. "I had assumed the official paperwork would take several days to process through the bureaucracy. I certainly did not expect the ANBU to deliver it so swiftly."
Turning his sightless eyes toward Haru's general direction, Kei continued, his voice dripping with earnest, absolute loyalty. "However, please rest assured, Clan Head-sama. Great Elder. Since the council has deemed it unsafe for me to traverse the village, I will, of course, abide by your wisdom. I shall go to the Hokage Tower this afternoon and formally decline Lord Third's request."
"I am certain Lord Third is a reasonable man," Kei added cheerfully. "He will undoubtedly understand the Main House's desire to keep me confined. He surely will not blame you for contradicting his orders."
Hack. Cough, cough, cough!
Hearing Kei's breezy declaration, Taihiro violently choked on his own saliva. He coughed into his fist, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple as he struggled to clear his airway.
"Kei!" Taihiro gasped, his voice cracking. "You cannot be serious! This is a direct mandate from the Hokage himself! It would be incredibly foolish to rashly refuse such an honor!"
Taihiro shot a desperate, wide-eyed glare at Hiashi, silently screaming for the Clan Head to intervene.
It was a political nightmare. A personal requisition from the Hokage was absolute law. To formally march into Hiruzen Sarutobi's office and refuse a direct order because the Hyuga elders 'wanted him to stay home' was tantamount to slapping the God of Shinobi across the face.
The elders were already terrified of the village leadership. The catastrophic fallout of the Kumogakure incident—which had resulted in the sacrifice of Hiashi's twin brother, Hizashi—was a permanent, bloody reminder of what happened when the Hyuga defied the village's political current. If they provoked Hiruzen's wrath now, especially with the Uchiha situation boiling over, the consequences would be apocalyptic.
Hiashi clearly understood the existential threat. He stood up, his regal composure fracturing. "The Great Elder is absolutely correct. The Hokage's decree supersedes all other obligations. It must be carried out immediately."
"But Clan Head-sama, Great Elder," Kei protested, his face a flawless mask of stubborn, filial piety. "Since the clan requires me to remain indoors for my own safety, I must obey your decree! These are the sacred rules of the Hyuga. How can I possibly violate them?"
"I will take the full blame," Kei promised earnestly. "I will explain everything to the old Hokage. He will certainly understand the difficult position the two of you are in!"
Understand?! He will view it as open treason!
Taihiro almost screamed the words aloud. He took a massive, shuddering breath, violently forcing his heart rate to slow. He plastered a strained, desperate smile onto his face and stood up.
"Kei, my boy," Taihiro said, his voice sickeningly sweet. "The Clan Head and I are deeply moved by your unwavering loyalty to our traditions. But loyalty requires nuance. We simply cannot disobey a direct summons from the Hokage."
"The Chief Elder speaks wisdom," Hiashi interjected rapidly, moving to stand beside Taihiro. "Not only must you accept this mission, Kei, but you must personally assure Lord Third that you will execute his orders with flawless diligence. Do you understand?"
"How can I possibly do that?" Kei shook his head stubbornly, playing the role of the devoted zealot to the absolute hilt. "I know the two of you are deeply concerned for my well-being. Precisely because of your boundless love, I should adhere even more strictly to the clan's protective rules."
"To me, Clan Head-sama, Great Elder... you are my family. How could I selfishly place my own career above the decrees of my family?"
"Therefore, please, do not attempt to persuade me," Kei declared, puffing out his chest. "I will go to Lord Third and ensure he knows my refusal was dictated by the Main House, so that no blame falls upon me."
Taihiro's remaining eye twitched violently. He looked as though he were about to suffer a stroke.
"Kei," Taihiro ground out, every syllable laced with suppressed panic. "You must listen to the Clan Head and me on this matter. You will accept the mission."
"But what of the sacred clan rules?" Kei asked innocently.
"Rules are ink on paper; people are flesh and blood," Hiashi countered smoothly, throwing generations of draconian Hyuga dogma out the window to save his own skin. "When serving the village, we must know how to adapt dynamically. We cannot be too rigid."
Kei brought a hand to his chin, rubbing it thoughtfully. He let the agonizing silence stretch for ten long seconds, letting the elders sweat.
"Very well," Kei finally relented. "So, I should go and report for duty to Lord Third?"
"Yes! Go immediately! Do not keep the Hokage waiting!" Taihiro practically shooed him away with his hands. "And remember to be impeccably polite when you see him. Understand?"
"Understood," Kei replied simply. He offered a crisp bow, turned on his heel, and walked out of the meeting hall.
As the heavy oak doors clicked shut, Hiashi and Taihiro simultaneously slumped back into their chairs, exhaling massive sighs of profound relief. Disaster had been narrowly averted.
But before their heart rates could even normalize, the heavy doors groaned open again.
Kei stood in the doorway.
Taihiro's fists clenched, but he forced his strained smile back into place. "What is wrong, Kei? Is there a complication?"
"It is just..." Kei hesitated, adopting a look of deep, logistical concern. "I am worried that executing a classified mission for the Hokage might incur operational expenses. I was wondering if the council might see fit to..."
Kei extended his right hand, slowly and deliberately rubbing his thumb and forefinger together.
Taihiro's jaw dropped. "Did I not just authorize a withdrawal of three hundred thousand ryo for you a mere few days ago? Have you squandered it already?!"
"I have not spent it all," Kei shook his head innocently. "However, field missions are wildly unpredictable. In the event of a tactical emergency, I am deeply concerned I will lack the necessary liquid assets to succeed."
Kei sighed heavily, letting his shoulders slump. "Perhaps... perhaps it truly would be safer to simply decline Lord Third and remain confined at home. I cannot bear the thought of burdening the clan with my logistical needs..."
Hearing the blind doctor openly threaten to sabotage their relationship with the Hokage again, Hiashi could not remain seated. He vaulted out of his chair.
"Kei, you must not overthink this!" Hiashi declared righteously, his voice echoing in the hall. "When you work for the Hokage, you act as the sword of the Hyuga! The clan must absolutely support its vanguard!"
Hiashi turned sharply toward the door. "Haru! Escort Kei to the primary vault immediately. Withdraw five hundred thousand... no, make it eight hundred thousand ryo. Authorized under my personal seal."
"Oh, Clan Head-sama, I couldn't possibly accept such a staggering sum," Kei protested, feigning overwhelming humility.
"It is merely a drop in the ocean compared to the village's safety!" Hiashi insisted, practically begging the boy to take the fortune. "The Hokage's mission is paramount. If you fail due to a lack of resources, the Hyuga name will be irreparably tarnished."
"Do not feel burdened, Kei," Hiashi added, his smile brittle. "If the funds prove insufficient, simply return to the Great Elder or myself. We will provide whatever you require."
Kei's face lit up with an expression of sudden, profound understanding. "I see! Thank you, Clan Head-sama! Great Elder! Please rest assured, I will burn my life to ash before I allow the Hyuga reputation to be tarnished!"
Having successfully robbed the Main House blind for the third time in a single month—and setting a new personal record for the payout—Kei offered one final, respectful bow and followed Haru out of the hall.
Stepping out onto the wooden veranda, Kei took a deep breath. The afternoon air tasted incredibly fresh, and the golden sunlight warming his face felt magnificent.
Beside him, Haru walked in silence. As they navigated the winding paths toward the subterranean vault, she repeatedly glanced at Kei from the corner of her eye. Her lips parted as if to speak, but she forced herself to swallow the words.
Her mind was a chaotic storm of shattering paradigms.
Just an hour ago, she had been absolutely certain that Kei would never escape the Great Elder's political cage. House arrest was an absolute decree.
But the moment a simple piece of paper bearing the Hokage's seal was introduced, the entire foundation of their reality had inverted. The Main House, notorious for its ruthless, unyielding adherence to tradition and hierarchy, had instantly folded. They had completely abandoned their own draconian rules. They had actually begged Kei to disobey their own confinement order.
Could it be... Haru thought, a cold shiver running down her spine, that before the absolute power of the Hokage, the sacred rules of the Hyuga Clan are nothing more than pathetic illusions?
A terrifying, treasonous thought surfaced from the depths of her psyche. Her entire worldview, built upon the infallible supremacy of the Main House, was violently crumbling into dust. The 'absolute law' that kept her enslaved was merely a shadow, powerless against true authority.
Haru quickly shook her head, desperately trying to cast away the heretical thoughts.
She did not realize, however, that her microscopic shifts in breathing, the erratic spiking of her chakra, and the existential terror bleeding into her posture had already been flawlessly mapped by the blind man walking beside her.
