Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Shadows at the Door

Daniel sat at the kitchen table, the dim light of the lamp cutting shadows across the walls.

He couldn't stop thinking about Emily—or the files, the missing children, the strange islands no one would talk about.

A soft knock at the door made him jump. He wasn't expecting anyone. Slowly, he approached, peering through the peephole. No one. Just shadows that seemed to linger longer than they should.

He shook his head and turned back to his papers. Maps, notes, newspaper clippings… all pointing to the same pattern. And then a thought struck him, cold and sudden: if what he was chasing was real, if the network was as powerful as the files suggested… his family could be in danger too.

He glanced at the living room. His younger sister, Mara, sat curled up on the couch, reading. His parents were in the next room, oblivious to the dark pattern Daniel was unraveling. A chill ran down his spine. If the people behind these disappearances had the reach he suspected, anyone connected to him could vanish next.

He picked up a photograph of Mara and his parents. The edges were worn, but the smiles were clear. He traced their faces with his finger, silently vowing: he wouldn't let them be the next victims. But he also knew he couldn't fight what he hadn't fully seen yet. The island, the masks, the rituals—they were still out there, waiting.

The knock came again, louder this time, echoing through the empty hallway. Daniel froze. The shadows outside the door seemed to twist, almost deliberately. He moved cautiously, but when he opened it… nothing. Just a note, slipped beneath the door.

He picked it up, reading the single sentence written in neat, almost taunting handwriting:

"Stay away, or those you love will disappear next."

The room went cold. His heart pounded. He understood now—this wasn't just about Emily. It was about the network, about powerful people who could reach anywhere, touch anyone.

Daniel folded the note carefully, tucking it into his jacket. He looked at his family again, their faces unaware of the danger looming over them. Somewhere, out there, the people behind the island were watching. And now, they had marked him.

He clenched his fists, the resolve hardening in his chest. Emily was still out there. And if he didn't uncover the truth fast… his family could be next.
