Chapter 15 - Surveillance

Following someone without being discovered was not something just anyone could do.

But for Jiang Hang, the task was extremely simple.

With Disguise, Assassin Steps, and Eagle Vision Lock working together, the possibility of being detected by the target was practically nonexistent.

No matter how alert someone might be, if Jiang Hang was tracking them from across an entire building, discovering him would be nearly impossible.

If someone could still notice him under those conditions, it would practically count as a battle between people with supernatural powers.

Clearly, Toyo Abe was no such superpowered individual. He had no idea that the detective he had hired to follow someone else was now secretly following him instead.

Although Abe possessed a basic level of caution, it was nowhere near enough to deal with Jiang Hang, who could track him from two streets away.

Abe's residence was not far from Jiang Hang's agency—about a thirty-minute walk.

That was perfectly normal. After all, it would have been strange if someone had traveled all the way across the city just to hire a small, newly opened detective agency.

After confirming that Toyo Abe had entered his home, Jiang Hang noticed it was almost dinner time. He found a nearby restaurant, ordered a meal, and quietly ate while occasionally using Eagle Vision to monitor Abe's movements.

However, until eight in the evening, Abe showed no unusual activity.

Just as Jiang Hang was considering moving closer to Abe's location, Yoshino Koharu sent him a message.

Jiang Hang opened the email and discovered that it contained basic information about Masaki Negishi.

He immediately called Yoshino Koharu and learned that after he had left the office, she had spent the entire time trying to investigate Negishi's background.

Jiang Hang had no idea how she managed to do it, but she had actually uncovered useful information.

Although the report was quite basic—listing Negishi's occupation, age, and general family background—it was clear that Yoshino Koharu had put considerable effort into organizing it.

And this alone revealed something important.

Yoshino Koharu seemed to have genuine talent in this kind of work.

Intercepting her before she followed her original path had already produced a pleasant surprise on the very first day.

Perhaps in the future, she could truly become an excellent assistant.

Thinking this, Jiang Hang sincerely thanked Yoshino Koharu for her hard work. When he heard that both she and Shizuka Sakaki had stayed in the office researching information instead of leaving work on time, he generously promised to treat them to a proper reward after this case was resolved.

At around nine o'clock, Jiang Hang finally saw Toyo Abe leave his house.

However, something immediately caught Jiang Hang's attention.

Abe got into his car and drove away.

Jiang Hang's expression twitched slightly.

That was an oversight.

Since arriving in Japan, Jiang Hang had not yet obtained a driver's license, nor had he bought a car. He hadn't expected Abe to travel by car.

He really needed to get a license and purchase a vehicle soon.

With that thought, Jiang Hang attempted something he had often seen in television dramas—stopping a taxi and chasing after the suspect.

Unfortunately, reality was not like television.

When someone drove away in a car, a taxi did not magically appear the moment you raised your hand.

In reality, Jiang Hang stood by the roadside for almost an entire minute before a taxi finally arrived.

Clearly, television dramas could not be trusted.

Muttering to himself, Jiang Hang quickly got into the taxi.

Fortunately, Toyo Abe was still within Eagle Vision's detection range.

Jiang Hang pretended to check his phone while calmly telling the driver Abe's current location.

After reaching that point, he immediately updated the driver with Abe's new position.

Fortunately, Jiang Hang's daily exploration tasks over the past week had paid off. At the very least, he had memorized most of the nearby street names, allowing him to describe the routes clearly.

The driver looked somewhat puzzled at first.

However, once Jiang Hang explained that he was a detective and handed over a business card from the Pioneer Detective Agency, the driver stopped asking questions.

After all, wherever Jiang Hang wanted to go, the driver would be paid based on distance.

In fact, the driver wouldn't mind if Jiang Hang kept riding around all night.

After about twenty minutes of driving, they arrived at a location that was still technically within the city—but it had clearly become a remote industrial district rather than a residential area.

Jiang Hang had never explored this area before.

Through Eagle Vision, Jiang Hang noticed that Toyo Abe had stopped his car.

He immediately asked the taxi driver to stop several hundred meters away.

To be safe, Jiang Hang paid the driver extra money to reserve the taxi for the entire night.

If Abe was only stopping briefly and the taxi left, finding another taxi in this isolated area late at night would be extremely difficult.

The taxi driver happily accepted the generous payment—an amount equivalent to what he normally earned in an entire day.

He patted his chest confidently and told Jiang Hang that if he ever needed transportation again, he could call him anytime.

Jiang Hang carefully saved the driver's contact information.

After all, networks were built little by little. Perhaps someday he might need the driver again—or perhaps the driver might encounter trouble and come to Jiang Hang's agency seeking help.

After getting out of the taxi, Jiang Hang quietly moved through the darkness toward Abe's location.

The area was clearly an industrial zone, and Toyo Abe had entered an abandoned warehouse.

Jiang Hang found a suitable vantage point and began observing the situation.

His Eagle Vision could still only be used intermittently, but since his physical condition had improved, the cooldown period had shortened considerably.

If he only used Eagle Vision for two or three seconds at a time, resting for about a minute afterward would prevent excessive strain on his eyes.

Inside the warehouse, Toyo Abe appeared to be alone.

However, from the fragmented glimpses Jiang Hang observed through Eagle Vision, it seemed that Abe was waiting for someone.

At one point, Abe even made a phone call—though Jiang Hang couldn't tell who he was speaking to.

Jiang Hang suspected he might be contacting Masaki Negishi.

Was Abe planning to kill Negishi inside this warehouse tonight?

Yet something didn't add up.

If Abe killed Negishi tonight, then who would Jiang Hang be following over the next three days?

How exactly did Abe plan to use Jiang Hang to fabricate his alibi?

Jiang Hang knew his own limitations very well.

He was essentially an assassin operating under the title of detective.

Over the past few days he had read many detective novels, but that did not automatically grant him brilliant deduction skills.

He could uncover truth using the assassin abilities provided by the system, but he would never become a detective like Shinichi Kudo, who could deduce the entire method of a crime purely through reasoning.

Time slowly passed.

About ten minutes later, another car stopped nearby.

Jiang Hang's eyes sharpened immediately.

It seemed the person Toyo Abe had been waiting for had finally arrived.
