Chapter 10 - The Race of Glory

Chapter 10: The Race of Glory

The sun was high in the sky, casting sharp shadows across the track. The school field had turned into a stadium of excitement. Every student was packed along the sidelines, phones recording, whispers and shouts blending into a storm of anticipation.

Timo tugged at Sam's arm.

"Bro… look at all these people! Even the teachers are watching!"

Sam nodded, taking a deep breath. His body was still recovering from the trap, but his mind was sharp. Every step, every struggle had prepared him for this.

Across the field, Brian stood with his usual smirk—but it was thinner now. He had underestimated Sam, and it showed. His friends tried to hype him up, but the fear in his eyes betrayed him.

Coach Kamau raised the whistle.

"Runners… ready!"

The tension was electric.

"Set!"

The runners bent low, muscles tense.

WHISTLE!

They were off.

Brian bolted ahead, fast and confident. The crowd cheered, some shouting for him, some whispering about Sam.

Sam's legs felt heavy at first. His body still remembered the weakness from the poisoned drink. But then, a surge of determination kicked in.

I didn't survive the trenches to fall now.

Step by step, he picked up pace. His tall frame and long legs gave him a natural advantage.

Timo ran alongside the track, waving his arms wildly.

"GO, SAM! RUN LIKE THE WIND! SHOW THEM WHO'S KING!"

Aisha's eyes followed him, wide with admiration. She whispered to herself:

"Sam… you're amazing."

The first half of the race was chaotic. Some students tripped, some stumbled, but Sam kept his rhythm steady. Every stride was precise, like poetry in motion.

Brian glanced behind. His lead was shrinking. Panic flashed across his face.

"Impossible!" he shouted, pushing himself harder.

Sam ignored him. He focused on the finish line.

Halfway through, Timo accidentally tripped on a rock and flailed into Brian's friends, causing them to stumble. Brian nearly lost balance.

Timo shouted, embarrassed but proud.

"BRO! USE THIS!"

Sam laughed weakly but didn't stop. Every distraction Brian tried to use against him now worked in Sam's favor.

The last 20 meters were intense. Sam's lungs burned, his legs screamed, but he could see Brian right ahead.

Aisha held her breath, cheering silently.

Timo's hands were in the air. "DO IT, BRO! FINISH IT LIKE A LEGEND!"

Sam pushed harder. Every memory from the trenches—the mornings carrying sacks, the hunger, the hard lessons—fueled him.

With one final surge, Sam overtook Brian.

The crowd erupted.

"HE DID IT! HE WON!"

Brian's jaw dropped. He stumbled across the finish line, defeated. His smirk gone, replaced by shock and disbelief.

Sam fell to his knees briefly, exhausted but victorious. Timo ran up and lifted him in the air.

"THE TRENCHES BOY! THE LEGEND! THE HERO!"

Aisha rushed forward, smiling brightly.

"You… you really did it!"

Sam looked at her, chest heaving.

"I… I didn't do it alone."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Who helped you?"

Timo pointed at himself dramatically.

"Me, of course! Emotional support and tactical genius!"

Sam laughed softly.

"Mostly… everyone who believed in me."

Aisha smiled warmly. Her eyes sparkled.

Brian, still recovering, looked at Sam differently now. Respect, grudging admiration, and maybe… a hint of fear.

Sam stood tall, looking over the cheering crowd. From the trenches to the track, he had proven himself.

And for the first time in a long time, he felt… fre
