In the morning, as was their custom, Solon and Ryuu were patrolling the commercial district. In front of a weapon shop, the Elf stopped and pointed toward a shortsword inlaid with a crimson magic stone displayed in the window.
"The Magic Sword 'Flame Howl.' It is a weapon crafted by the Hephaestus Familia," the Elf explained to Solon. "Activating it allows for a flame-imbued slash. It can be used seven times and retails for eight million Valis."
Solon looked at the shortsword, his brow furrowing slightly. "Only seven times?"
"The essence of a Magic Sword is the sealing of magic into the sword's magic stone in the form of fuel," Ryuu continued. "Each use consumes the stored mana. Once exhausted, the weapon destroys itself. This is the most common form of enchanted weaponry in Orario."
She paused for a moment of thought before adding, "As for Magic Swords that do not self-destruct, they are exceptionally rare. Furthermore, their power depends entirely on the wielder's own mana capacity."
Solon nodded thoughtfully, processing Ryuu's words.
"But that seems... so impractical for an adventurer. In a life-or-death situation, you need a weapon that decides the outcome, not one that leaves you hanging."
Solon began to ruminate. In the DND magic system, the creation of magical items was a fundamental skill for a wizard. Through magic, one could permanently fix a spell's effect onto an object, creating a true magical item. This was diametrically opposed to Orario's concept of disposable "Magic Swords."
Rubbing his chin, his thoughts drifted toward the magical items of the DND ruleset. There were powerful weapons there too, but the logic was entirely different.
A Flame Tongue longsword did not store its fire in an "exhaustible battery"; rather, the fire became an inherent property of the blade, much like its sharpness or weight. As long as the sword remained intact, it could theoretically produce flames indefinitely. A Ring of Protection could deflect danger countless times over the owner's lifetime, rather than crumbling into dust after blocking a few hits.
To Solon, a Magic Sword was like a powerful rocket launcher that could only fire once, whereas a DND magical item was an independent piece of equipment capable of long-term utility.
A seed of an idea began to sprout in his mind.
"Miss Ryuu," Solon said suddenly. "If I... could permanently fix my magic onto an item to make it a lasting piece of magical equipment, do you think it would be feasible?"
Ryuu stopped and turned to him. Surprise flashed in her eyes, quickly replaced by contemplation.
It sounds possible, doesn't it? Given that Solon's magic was already so peculiar, it wouldn't be strange if he possessed such a unique ability.
"Your magic system is different from Orario's," she said slowly. "If anyone else proposed this, I would consider it unrealistic." She looked Solon in the eye. "But if it is you, I believe it is feasible and worth an attempt. Creating permanent magical items would not only provide extra protection for the Familia but could also become a new source of resources for us."
With Ryuu's initial approval, the plan in Solon's mind became clearer.
That evening, Solon presented his idea to the entire Familia. In the dining hall, the reactions were varied.
"Stuffing magic into armor and weapons?" Alise's eyes sparkled. "Like the Spirit Weapons from the hero stories? That sounds incredibly cool!"
Kaguya crossed her arms and arched an eyebrow. "It's a good idea, but how confident are you? Crafting magical items isn't a game. It requires massive amounts of materials, time, and most importantly, the technical skill—do you even have the relevant Developmental Ability?"
"I don't. But my magic provides me with the possibility. I need some basic equipment for experimentation: ordinary armor, weapons, accessories, and some auxiliary materials."
Solon answered Kaguya after a moment's pause, his voice radiating a quiet confidence in his own magic.
Lyra rested her chin in her hands, her short pink hair swaying. "Is Master Solon going to become a magic item merchant? If you make some fun tools, I'll be your first customer! Like a ring that suddenly sprays chili powder, or a trap plate that causes hallucinations when stepped on~"
Lyra seemed to be envisioning strange traps already, looking eager to try them.
"Lyra, be serious." Ryuu sighed helplessly and turned to Solon. "What materials do you need? We have funds on hand; we can support your experiments."
"Just the basics for now." Solon had already compiled a list in his mind. "A few sets of standard leather armor, steel swords, some silver and copper rings, necklace bases, magic stone powder, mana-conductive wire, stabilizing potions, and various tools... I'll start by experimenting with low-tier spells."
Astree (Noin) nodded. "I will report this to Lady Astrea and prepare the procurement list. You'll need a quiet workspace."
"My room will do," Solon said quickly. "During the experiment phase, I might be temporarily unable to participate in daily patrols and training."
"No problem!" Alise patted her chest. "Leave it to us! You just focus on your inventions! However..." she blinked mischievously. "If you make fireproof armor, you have to let me try it first! Every time I use [Agarbatti], it burns my clothes. It's such a hassle!"
Kaguya gave a light huff. "I want equipment that can temporarily boost speed. It would be useful for pursuit and evasion."
Ryuu thought about her own greatest weakness—her lack of defense. She said softly, "If... there were accessories that provided basic protection, it would be a great safeguard for Supporters and non-frontline personnel." As if realizing something, her ears turned slightly red.
Solon noted down everyone's requests.
A day later, the materials were ready. Solon's room was temporarily converted into a rudimentary workshop. Basic equipment and materials were piled in the corners, and the table was covered with bottles, jars, and tools. The windows were draped with heavy cloth, leaving only a single magic stone lamp for illumination.
On the first day, Solon attempted to fix [Shield] onto a breastplate. The process was far more difficult than he had imagined.
He needed to first "carve" the complete spell model into a miniature magic circle made of mana-conductive wire, then embed the circle into the equipment, and finally fix everything in place using a conductive medium made of a blend of stabilizing potions and magic stone powder.
On the first attempt, the wire snapped while he was carving a node, and the circle collapsed. On the second, he messed up the ratio of the conductive medium; after it solidified, the effect was highly unstable, and the [Shield] spell dissipated only three seconds after being triggered.
By the evening of the third day, Solon had been working for over thirty consecutive hours. His eyes were bloodshot, and his mental energy was nearly depleted, but his work was becoming smoother. Dozens of failures had yielded experience. He was gradually discovering the limits of the metal's resilience and had found the optimal ratio for the medium.
More importantly, he discovered how to carve the spell models onto the items and stabilize them through resonance with the Abyssal Codex of Myriad Laws.
In the early hours of the fourth day, before the morning light could pierce through the curtains, Solon set down his tweezers. On the table, four items emitting a faint magical aura sat quietly.
Solon couldn't help but grin. It was done.
I'll take these and test them out. He felt a surge of anticipation at how the other members of the Familia would react.
