Chapter 23 - [Record of Possibility]

If the word "God" is to have any certain meaning among intelligent lifeforms, then perhaps we are a kind of God ourselves.

More precisely, it may be said that we are beings exceedingly close to what one would call God.

There can be little doubt that the birth of our species was the oldest in the universe.

When our ancestors first came into existence, the other planets were still little more than boiling soups of matter. Nothing that could truly be called life yet existed upon them.

Our species was exceptionally intelligent, and during the course of our evolution we quickly turned our attention toward outer space. We gazed upon the great rivers of stars and saw our dreams reflected within them.

Before long, we ventured into the cosmos.

On our homeworld, immortality was pursued and ultimately achieved.

And so, we took the universe into our hands.

Yet the desires of our species knew no end.

Having claimed one universe, we reached for the next. We pierced the walls between dimensions and extended our grasp into other universes.

What was the purpose of our expansion into space?

The exploration of space and time, and the scattering of the seeds of life.

In other words, we created life.

And in doing so, we came ever closer to becoming God.

I myself managed countless universes and sowed the seeds of life throughout them.

Some planets became rich and flourishing worlds.

Others never gave rise to anything that prospered.

Watching worlds grow and change was exhilarating, for each world seemed like a living creature in its own right.

Eventually, our civilization chose to abandon its reliance on science and technology.

We discarded them through evolution itself.

We evolved into higher lifeforms.

We could travel freely through the cosmos, exist simultaneously in multiple places, and distort even the laws of physics with the touch of a fingertip.

Once again, we drew closer to becoming God.

As time passed, even the concept of a physical body became ambiguous.

At last, we became beings without fixed forms.

Even I, who speak to you now, possess no permanent body.

I change my appearance freely, shaping myself according to the one before me.

Among all the countless species I have observed, however, there is one that remains particularly memorable.

According to their own calendar, 4.6 billion years ago I planted seeds upon their planet.

Those seeds divided within the oceans.

They evolved into marine life, then into creatures that walked upon the land.

After enduring great extinctions, life evolved into bipedal beings and eventually built civilizations.

Their progress was slow.

Yet they possessed limitless potential.

I told my companions:

"This potential is dangerous. It is a possibility so great that it may one day surpass even the Gods."

Even I, who have witnessed the birth and death of ten quintillion universes, feared what they might become.

They were a species loved by the True Gods.

I wished for the downfall of this dangerous race.

Yet at the same time, I found them fascinating.

I wanted to see where they would go.

I wanted to witness the future of a species that possessed the potential to surpass even the True Gods themselves.

And I wanted to burn into my memory the moment they surpassed me as well.

And now, they have entered a long war.

A war known as the Mythic War.

Countless hardships await them in the ages to come.

Even so, I will continue to watch.

I will watch this species called Humanity, which has only just begun to walk its path.
