Chapter 22 - Under Their Eyes

Raven didn't move.

Not because she was strong.

But because her body didn't know what direction to go anymore.

The woman's words were still hanging in the air.

It's you.

Like a verdict.

Not a discovery.

Claire shifted first, placing herself slightly in front of Raven without fully thinking.

Cyprian saw it immediately.

And something in his face tightened.

Not anger.

Control being tested.

"Step away from her," Cyprian said lowly.

The woman didn't look at him.

Her eyes stayed fixed on Raven like she was studying something fragile that had just cracked.

"You're shaking," she said quietly.

Raven swallowed.

"I'm fine," she managed, but her voice betrayed her.

The man finally spoke from below the stairs.

"Bring her down."

That wasn't a suggestion.

It was instruction.

Claire shook her head immediately.

"No."

The word landed sharper than expected.

Even Raven turned slightly toward her.

Cyprian's gaze snapped to Claire.

But Claire didn't flinch this time.

"She is pregnant," Claire said firmly. "You don't get to demand her like she's a file on your desk."

A pause.

The air tightened.

The woman finally turned her gaze slightly toward Claire.

Not offended.

Amused in a cold way.

"You're protective," she said.

Claire didn't respond.

The woman's eyes returned to Raven.

"Come down," she repeated, softer now.

But it wasn't gentleness.

It was control wrapped in calm.

Raven hesitated.

Her stomach tightened again…..sharper this time.

She flinched slightly.

Cyprian noticed instantly.

"Raven," he said again, quieter now.

That tone was different.

Not command.

Warning.

Raven slowly stepped down one stair.

Then another.

Claire followed closely behind her like a shield that didn't fully know what it was shielding her from.

When Raven reached the bottom, the space around her changed instantly.

The woman didn't move closer immediately.

She just looked at her.

Like she was confirming something internal.

The man's voice broke the silence.

"So this is her."

Raven felt her throat tighten.

She didn't like how they said it.

Not like a person.

Like a condition.

Cyprian stepped forward slightly.

"This ends now," he said.

But no one reacted to him the way people usually did.

Not fully.

That was what scared Raven.

The woman finally walked closer.

Slow.

Measuring.

She stopped directly in front of Raven.

Raven felt her presence like pressure on her chest.

The woman looked down slightly.

"You're younger than expected," she said.

Raven didn't respond.

"Fragile," she added.

Claire's hand tightened slightly behind Raven.

Cyprian's voice sharpened again.

"Don't talk about her like that."

The woman finally looked at him.

For the first time.

And there it was.

Something like authority clashing with authority.

"You invited this into your home," she said calmly.

Cyprian didn't respond.

That silence again.

The man took a step forward.

"We are not here for sentiment," he said. "We are here because your actions have consequences beyond you."

Raven's breathing tightened slightly.

Consequences.

That word felt heavy.

The woman circled Raven slowly.

Not touching her.

Just observing.

"You're carrying his child," she said.

Raven flinched slightly at how direct it sounded.

Not tender.

Not sacred.

Just factual.

Claire spoke suddenly.

"And she's human, in case you forgot."

The woman stopped walking.

Looked at Claire briefly.

Then back at Raven.

"There is nothing forgotten," she said.

A pause.

"Only confirmed."

Cyprian stepped forward again.

"Enough," he said sharply. "You've seen what you came to see."

But the man shook his head slightly.

"No," he said.

That one word changed the tone again.

Because it meant they were not done.

The woman's gaze softened slightly….but not toward Raven.

Toward Cyprian.

"You are protecting her too tightly," she said.

Cyprian's jaw tightened.

"I am protecting what is mine."

That sentence landed differently.

Raven felt it.

Claire felt it.

Even the silence felt it.

The woman tilted her head slightly.

"That is exactly what we are worried about."

A pause.

Then…

"Because you don't protect things you are afraid to lose."

The air shifted instantly.

Cyprian didn't move.

But something inside him clearly reacted.

Raven saw it.

A flicker.

Barely there.

But real.

Claire whispered under her breath.

"This is not normal family visit…"

The woman finally stepped back slightly.

"I will examine her," she said.

Raven froze.

Claire immediately stepped forward.

"Absolutely not."

The man's eyes narrowed slightly.

"It's not optional."

Cyprian's voice dropped dangerously low.

"You don't touch her."

That was the first time his control cracked slightly.

Not loud.

But sharp enough to feel.

The woman looked at him again.

And this time, her voice lowered.

"Then control her properly," she said.

A pause.

"Because something in her condition is already unstable."

Raven's stomach tightened sharply again.

This time worse.

She inhaled quickly…

and pain hit harder than before.

Her hand shot to her stomach instantly.

A sharp sound escaped her.

Not controlled.

Not intentional.

Just human.

And everything stopped.

Immediately.

The woman turned her head sharply.

Cyprian moved instantly toward Raven.

"Raven," his voice changed again.

Closer now.

Urgent.

Claire caught her as Raven slightly bent forward.

"I'm fine," Raven whispered again, but weaker this time.

The woman's expression changed.

Not concern.

Assessment becoming serious.

She stepped forward quickly now.

Closer than before.

And for the first time….

her voice lost its edge slightly.

"What exactly did you feel?" she asked.

Raven shook her head slightly.

"I don't know…"

Cyprian didn't look away from Raven.

The man stepped forward too.

"This is not normal stress response."

Cyprian's jaw tightened.

"She's been under pressure."

The woman ignored him again.

Her focus was entirely on Raven now.

And something about that shift changed everything.

Less authority.

More urgency.

"Lie down," she said suddenly.

Claire frowned.

"What?"

The woman didn't look at her.

"Now."

Cyprian stepped forward immediately.

"No."

But the woman finally looked at him properly.

And for the first time…

there was warning in her eyes.

Not emotional.

Medical.

Danger recognition.

"If you want that child to survive," she said quietly, "you will let me assess her properly."

Silence dropped again.

Heavy.

Final.

Raven's breathing was uneven now.

Cyprian didn't speak.

And in that silence…

he didn't look like a man in control anymore.

He looked like someone standing between two outcomes he could no longer fully predict.

And that terrified him more than anything else in the room.
