Chapter 35 - An Offer Beneath the Sea Wind

there he was.

Campbell.

Calmly seated near the shoreline, as though he had been waiting all morning.

The child rested peacefully in his arms, wrapped carefully beneath a blanket. She slept soundly, unaware of the storm gathering around her.

For a moment, Tiza simply stared.

Of all the possibilities that had crossed his mind during the journey, this was not one of them.

He had expected soldiers.

Perhaps reinforcements.

Perhaps Jeremiah.

Perhaps an ambush.

But Campbell?

That was something he had never anticipated.

The sea breeze swept across the shore as Campbell slowly rose from his chair.

A small smile appeared on his face.

Confident.

Relaxed.

Almost welcoming.

With the child still cradled in his arms, he took several slow steps forward.

"Welcome home, my boy."

His voice carried easily through the morning air.

"It's been a while."

His eyes studied the massive creature standing before him.

"You've grown."

He smiled wider.

"Changed, even."

His gaze traveled across the dark fur, the glowing eyes, and the immense frame of the Shadow Wolf.

"I like the new look."

A soft chuckle escaped him.

"You look scarier."

He paused.

"More like the beast you were always meant to be."

Campbell could barely hide his excitement.

There was an enthusiasm in him that bordered on fascination.

His curiosity burned brighter than caution.

Brighter than fear.

And perhaps that was what made him so dangerous.

Behind him, however, the soldiers felt none of that confidence.

Fear gripped them tightly.

Even as trained soldiers, they struggled to remain composed.

Their hands shook.

Several could barely keep their rifles aimed.

Others held their swords with trembling fingers.

Sweat ran down their faces despite the cool ocean breeze.

Panic lingered among them like a sickness.

Because standing before them was not simply a man.

It was the Shadow Wolf.

The legend they had heard whispered about for years.

The monster who refused to die.

Yet despite the fear surrounding them, when Campbell and Tiza finally stood face-to-face, it felt less like enemies meeting on a battlefield.

And more like old comrades meeting after a long separation.

Only silence stood between them.

Tiza could not speak.

Not with words.

Yet a low growl rumbled from his chest as he slowly moved forward.

Campbell did not flinch.

Instead, he nodded.

As though he understood perfectly.

As though he could hear the questions hidden within the beast's voice.

The two stopped only a few feet apart.

Neither moved.

Neither attacked.

Then Campbell spoke again.

"My boy, there are only two ways this ends."

The soldiers behind him immediately stiffened.

"You can fight."

His voice remained calm.

"Or you can come with me."

The words hung heavily in the air.

Campbell adjusted the blanket around the sleeping child before continuing.

"I know the secret."

For the first time, Caesar's eyes narrowed.

"I know what Lara was trying to protect."

Campbell's gaze remained steady.

"And I will tell you this."

His expression hardened slightly.

"I will keep your secret."

A brief silence followed.

"I will protect your secret."

Then his voice softened.

"But only if you choose the right path."

He extended a hand.

"Come with me."

"Let me study you."

"Let me understand what you've become."

"Let me make you stronger."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"My soldier."

He glanced down at the sleeping child.

"If you do that, you will live."

His eyes returned to Caesar.

"You will live to watch your people survive."

"You will watch this child grow."

"You will watch her become more than she was born to be."

Campbell took one final step closer.

"Part of something greater."

Silence followed.

The waves crashed softly against the shore.

The wind moved through the trees.

No one spoke.

Tiza stood motionless.

Inside, his thoughts raced.

He knew he could attack.

But he also knew what that would mean.

Campbell was no ordinary soldier.

He was a wolf hunter.

A commander.

A man who had spent years studying creatures like him.

Even if Tiza managed to kill him, the battle would not end there.

Dozens of soldiers stood nearby.

Weapons waited.

The child remained in Campbell's arms.

A fight would become a massacre.

And the consequences would be irreversible.

No.

He could not take that risk.

Not today.

Not with so much at stake.

The realization settled heavily upon him.

There was only one way to protect them.

Only one way to stay close enough to watch over them.

Only one way to ensure their survival.

Submission.

Not because he was defeated.

Not because he was weak.

Because it was necessary.

Because some sacrifices demanded more courage than battle itself.

Yet even knowing this, the choice tore at his heart.

Because accepting Campbell's offer meant something else.

Something far more painful.

It meant leaving Lara behind.

It meant leaving his child behind.

Perhaps for years.

Perhaps forever.

The thought hurt more than any wound he had ever suffered.

But deep down, Tiza already knew.

This was never truly a choice.

It was a responsibility.

A burden only he could carry.

And for the people he loved...

For Lara.

For his daughter.

For the future he hoped they would have.

He was willing to bear it.
