Chapter 23 - Mapping the shadows - chapter 23

The orphanage corridors were dim in the late afternoon, sunlight spilling through narrow windows and casting long, shifting shadows along the walls.

Ostina moved through them like a whisper, her small frame brushing against the corners, her shards of dark magic hovering silently around her fingers. Every movement was deliberate; every heartbeat measured.

Today was different.

Today, she would test the limits of her network, seeking hidden blind spots where even Elara's sharp gaze could not reach.

Her first discovery came in the attic crawlspace. A narrow beam ran along the ceiling, hidden behind stacked crates. Ostina pressed herself against it, small enough to be invisible from below, while her shards reinforced the weak boards beneath.

She slid silently along the length of the beam, noting how Elara paused in the hallway below, unaware of the tiny figure gliding above her. Here, Ostina thought, is a path she cannot observe.

Next, a loose panel behind the laundry room shelving caught her attention.

A faint light glimmered through the crack when Elara's shadow passed too close.

Ostina traced the panel with her fingertips, gently prying it open with threads of shadow.

Behind it was a narrow space, just wide enough for her to press against the wall and move unseen.

She practiced weaving through it, timing her movements to coincide with Elara's attention elsewhere.

The garden provided another lesson.

Certain flowerbeds and low hedges created natural blind spots.

Ostina guided herself through them, blending into shadows and foliage, testing how close Elara could come before losing sight of her entirely.

A careful combination of movement, timing, and subtle manipulation of leaves and water allowed her to traverse the area almost invisibly.

Inside the dormitory, she

experimented with more audacious paths.

A vent grate, slightly loose, provided a hidden route along the ceiling beams of the hallways.

Ostina reinforced it subtly, ensuring it could support her weight, then practiced slipping through while Elara's attention lingered elsewhere. Each successful pass reinforced her confidence and expanded her mental map of the orphanage.

By midday, she had identified multiple blind spots: corners where shadows pooled naturally, spaces behind tall furniture, low crawlspaces, and gaps between beams and tiles.

Each one became a waypoint in her escape network, every path tested, every obstacle accounted for.

Even with all her care, a near miss reminded her of the stakes. In the dining hall, she moved across a patch of sunlight where Elara's gaze swept instinctively.

A shard of shadow lifted a small rug, creating a gentle flicker that drew the nun's eyes for just a moment. Ostina froze, waiting for the glance to pass.

When Elara moved on, she exhaled quietly, noting how quickly and easily even slight distractions could mislead the observant nun.

By evening, Ostina had refined her network into a lattice of hidden paths, blind spots, and subtle misdirections.

She knew where Elara's attention lingered longest, where her peripheral vision faltered, and which areas could be exploited with minimal risk.

Curled beneath her blanket later, she allowed herself a small smile.

I am learning every shadow, every flaw, every blind spot.

She can watch, she can follow… but she cannot see me.

Not yet.

Not ever.

The orphanage hummed around her, alive with footsteps and whispers, but invisible to the careful, calculating movements of its smallest, cleverest resident.

Ostina's mastery of observation, timing, and subtle manipulation had reached a new level.

Soon, she would have the freedom to move entirely unnoticed—

and Elara's investigation would reach its limit.
