Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 - The Siege of The Void

The *Aegis* was no longer a cold cage of titanium and copper. To Kael, it was a body.

His nerves were the fiber-optic cables; his pulse was the rhythmic thrum of the Zero-Point reactor. He could feel a leak in a pressure valve in Sector 9 like a pinprick on his skin. He could feel the weight of the Vanguard soldiers walking across his "bones." And most clearly, he could feel the cold, oily touch of the Void-Eater fleet as they began to latch onto his outer hull.

** his own voice—merged with the Core—echoed through the station's speakers. **

Outside the station, the vacuum of space ignited.

The Void-Eater fleet moved with a terrifying, liquid grace. Hundreds of the jagged, black needles swarmed the *Aegis*, spitting lances of white entropy that ate away at the silver shields. Each hit felt like a blow to Kael's chest, a dull ache that threatened to pull his consciousness apart.

"Kael! Can you hear me?" Lyra's voice came from the command dais. She was standing at the center of the "brain," her hands buried in a holographic interface that allowed her to direct the station's tactical movements.

** Kael's voice boomed, calm and resonant. **

"I see it," Lyra said, her eyes narrowing. "Jax! I need the over-clocked railguns! Kael is providing the targeting, you just give them the punch!"

"On it!" Jax's voice crackled over the comms from the deep engine rooms. "I've bypassed the safety limiters. These guns are going to kick like a mule, Kael. Try not to let your 'shoulders' snap!"

On the outer hull, the massive defense turrets—once rusted and slow—snapped into position with predatory speed. Guided by Kael's omniscient vision, they didn't fire at the swarm. They fired at the space *between* the ships.

**

The railgun slugs, infused with silver Void energy, didn't just impact; they created localized singularities. The black needle-ships were sucked into the gravity wells, colliding with one another and shattering into clouds of dark dust.

But the "Mother-Needle"—a ship the size of a city—was now emerging from the shadow of the moon. It didn't fire weapons. It opened its "Maw," a massive portal of pure, light-eating darkness.

"They're trying to swallow us whole," Lyra whispered.

** Kael thought.

He reached out with his new, metallic limbs. He didn't just use the station's weapons; he used its *position*. He manipulated the gravity of the *Aegis* itself, turning the station into a massive kinetic battering ram.

"Kael, what are you doing?" Jax yelled. "The inertial dampeners are melting! We're accelerating toward the Mother-Needle!"

** Kael's voice echoed, filled with a sudden, fierce joy. **

The *Aegis* screamed as it tore through the vacuum, a streak of silver light against the blackness of the Void. The swarm tried to block the path, but the "Lattice" shields vaporized them on contact.

Inside the station, the walls groaned. Lyra held onto the command console, her hair whipping around her face as the artificial gravity struggled to keep up with Kael's maneuvers.

"Brace for impact!" she screamed.

The *Aegis* didn't just hit the Mother-Needle; it pierced it. Kael focused the entirety of the station's shield into a single point—a "Spear of the Architect." The silver point punched through the black stone hull of the enemy flagship, burying the *Aegis* deep within the creature-ship's throat.

The sensation was revolting. Kael could feel the Void-Eater's "blood"—a cold, acidic slime—coating his outer sensors. He could feel the enemy's consciousness trying to invade his mind, a billion voices whispering for him to let go, to sleep, to dissolve into the dark.

** Kael roared back into the mental void. **

He triggered the "Modulo Pulse" from the very center of the station.

A wave of silver-and-gold energy exploded outward from the *Aegis*, traveling through the Mother-Needle's internal corridors. It wasn't an explosion of fire; it was an explosion of *logic*. It forced the entropic matter of the Void-Eaters to stabilize, to become solid, to follow the laws of physics once more.

The flagship couldn't handle the sudden weight of its own existence. It began to crumble, the black stone turning into harmless stardust.

"Kael! We're losing the shield! You have to pull us out!" Lyra shouted.

But Kael was deep in the trance. He saw the heart of the Mother-Needle—a pulsating core of stolen suns. If he destroyed it, the explosion would wipe out the entire fleet. But it would also consume the *Aegis*.

"Kael, no!" Lyra realized what he was thinking. "There's another way! Use the Vanguard!"

** Kael commanded. **

"We are the Shield, Architect," Ignis responded.

Ten thousand silver warriors flew out of the *Aegis's* airlocks, diving into the dying flagship. They formed a sphere around the enemy's sun-core, their armor glowing with a blinding, suicidal brilliance.

"Kael, move us! Now!" Jax's voice was a sob.

Kael fired the thrusters. The *Aegis* lurched backward, tearing itself free from the disintegrating wreckage just as the Vanguard detonated their own essences to snuff out the enemy core.

The shockwave sent the station spinning into the darkness.

When the light finally faded, the Void-Eater fleet was gone. The moon sat silent and lonely in the sky. And the *Aegis*... the *Aegis* was drifting, its lights dim, its "soul" flickering like a candle in a gale.

In the Grand Atrium, Lyra stumbled toward the central pillar. The silver mist was receding, and a figure was slumped on the floor, breathing raggedly.

"Kael?"

He looked up. His eyes were no longer silver galaxies. They were human. Tired, bloodshot, and very much human.

"I think..." Kael wheezed, "I think I broke your station."

Lyra fell to her knees beside him, laughing through her tears. "We can fix the station, you idiot. We have a world to garden."
