Up in the commentary gantry, Martin Tyler adjusted his headset, his iconic voice carrying over the global broadcast.
"Welcome, football fans, to the hallowed grounds of Villa Park! The second round of the Premier League season brings us Aston Villa hosting Bournemouth under the Saturday night lights."
"Dean Smith's men are riding the crest of a massive wave after that chaotic 4-3 victory over Tottenham, while Eddie Howe's Cherries come into this searching for their first win after a gritty draw with Brentford."
"Let's look at the teams. Villa deploy an attacking 4-3-3. Tom Heaton continues in goal. A back four of Elmohamady, Engels, Mings, and Taylor. In the center of the park, it's John McGinn alongside the Brazilian debutant Douglas Luiz, anchored by the seventeen-year-old sensation, Theodore Bjorn. Up top, Jack Grealish and Anwar El Ghazi flank the big man, Wesley."
"For the visitors, Eddie Howe sets up in his trusted 4-4-2. The young Aaron Ramsdale takes the gloves. A backline of Daniels, Ake, Cook, and Smith. Across the midfield: Ryan Fraser, Lerma, Billing, and Harry Wilson. Leading the line, Callum Wilson partners Joshua King."
"The stage is set. The Holte End is in full voice..... Let the game of football begins."
Martin Atkinson checked his watch and blew the whistle.
Aston Villa kicked off!
Wesley rolled the ball back to Douglas Luiz. The new Brazilian signing was eager to make an immediate impression on his home debut.
Receiving the ball under slight pressure from Callum Wilson, Luiz dropped his shoulder and effortlessly dragged the ball past the striker with his left foot.
Finding himself with open grass, Luiz drove into the Bournemouth half.
Because Eddie Howe had specifically instructed his midfield banks to sit deep and monitor Theodore's positioning, Luiz found himself completely uncontested as he crossed the halfway line.
Spotting Wesley making a run, Luiz clipped a beautiful, looping pass toward the edge of the Bournemouth penalty area.
Wesley pinned himself against Nathan Ake, preparing to bring the ball down.
Despite the massive height discrepancy—Wesley standing at 191cm to Ake's 180cm—the Dutch center-back was brilliant in the air.
Ake didn't try to out-muscle the Brazilian.
He used his superior agility and anticipation to step right in front of Wesley, rising cleanly to head the ball out over the touchline.
Villa took the resulting throw-in, resetting the play.
The ball was worked back into the center circle, rolling smoothly into the path of Theodore Bjorn.
Instantly, a Bournemouth midfielder stepped out of the defensive block, closing him down fast.
Jefferson Lerma and Philip Billing stepped up to meet him.
Both Bournemouth midfielders were towering, physically imposing figures, known for bullying opponents in one-on-one duels.
Fully aware of their size advantage, Lerma and Billing charged straight at the teenager, expecting to muscle him off the ball.
Instead, they hit a brick wall.
Theodore's core strength and balance were terrifying.
He didn't even flinch.
He dropped his shoulder, absorbed the double-impact, and effortlessly shrugged both men to the turf.
In the stands of Villa Park, the home crowd erupted in cheers. This was exactly the kind of gritty dominance the forty thousand Holte Enders lived to see.
"Outstanding strength from the boy!" Tyler praised over the Sky Sports broadcast. "He doesn't just survive the challenge, he swats away two grown men like they aren't even there! Good luck dispossessing him when he sets his feet."
On the pitch, Theodore drove the ball toward the edge of the D, putting immense pressure on the Bournemouth backline.
Down on the touchline, Eddie Howe was screaming at his defenders to step up and close the space.
Meanwhile, Lerma and Billing had scrambled to their feet and were desperately chasing Theodore down from behind to stop the run.
Just as center-back Nathan Ake stepped out to commit to the tackle, Theodore slipped a delicate, disguised pass with his left foot through the gap.
The ball rolled perfectly into the path of Wesley inside the box.
However, the Brazilian's finish was dreadful. Under slight pressure from a recovering defender, Wesley snatched at the shot, scuffing it horribly.
The ball trickled harmlessly out of bounds for a goal kick.
Aston Villa had completely wasted a golden opportunity!
"That finish was absolutely abysmal," Tyler noted, failing to hide his disappointment. "You simply have to test the keeper from there."
On Twitter, the Villa fanbase was equally ruthless!
@VillaTillIDie: What an otherworldly miss. Put me up top, I would have buried that.
@HolteEnder82: Absolute waste of a world-class through ball from Theo. Fucking embarrassing.
@EPL_Scout: How do you put zero power into a shot from eight yards out?
@BrummieBoy: I'm starting to really miss Tammy Abraham. We desperately need a clinical number nine.
...
Five minutes later, the visitors began to bare their teeth.
Eddie Howe's teams were built on a solid defensive foundation, but they were lethal when pouncing on mistakes.
Grealish, trying to do too much in the center circle, telegraphed a sideways pass intended for McGinn.
Lerma anticipated the move perfectly, sliding in to intercept the ball before it reached its target.
Billing scooped up the loose ball and instantly triggered the counter.
He drove a pass forward to Joshua King on the edge of the Villa third.
The Norwegian forward killed the ball with his left foot, paused for a fraction of a second to draw the defense, and slipped a precise through ball down the channel.
Callum Wilson latched onto it.
As Bournemouth's top scorer, Wilson possessed raw pace and brilliant one-on-one skills.
King's pass put him in a direct footrace with Tyrone Mings.
Instead of trying to shift the ball out wide, Wilson aggressively cut inside, attempting to overpower Mings with pure physical force.
He was overly confident.
While Mings wasn't the most agile defender, he was an absolute unit.
Wilson couldn't shake him, and the delay allowed Björn Engels to sprint back and cleanly pick Wilson's pocket from behind.
The loose ball rolled straight to Theodore in the midfield.
He didn't take an extra touch to settle it.
Spotting the Bournemouth right-back caught high up the pitch, Theodore launched a raking, cross-field pass!
The ball sailed beautifully through the Birmingham sky, dropping on a dime right at Grealish's feet on the left flank.
Receiving the ball in his favored pocket of space, Grealish drove hard at the retreating defense.
He chopped the ball inside onto his right foot to open the angle and unleashed a heavy, curling strike!
The ball whipped past Aaron Ramsdale and nestled perfectly into the far corner of the net.
Grealish had found his rhythm!
1-0!
Villa held the advantage!
After seeing the net ripple, Grealish didn't run to the corner flag, he sprinted straight back to Theodore, pulling the teenager into a massive hug to celebrate the assist.
Trailing away from home, Bournemouth couldn't afford to sit in their low block anymore.
In the 23rd minute, Eddie Howe waved his men forward, initiating a high press.
But Villa had done their homework.
Every time Callum Wilson looked to receive the ball with his back to goal, two claret and blue shirts immediately swarmed him.
By suffocating their main outlet, Villa effectively choked Bournemouth's entire attacking system.
The visitors failed to register a single threatening shot on Tom Heaton's goal.
In the 34th minute, Villa struck back. Exploiting Bournemouth's high line, Theodore and McGinn triggered a vicious midfield trap.
They collapsed on Lerma, stripping the towering Colombian of the ball in the center circle.
McGinn instantly laid it off to Theodore.
Running the exact same play that led to the goal, Theodore launched a sweeping pass out to Grealish on the left wing.
But Bournemouth's defense had learned their lesson.
Adam Smith refused to give Grealish the space to cut inside.
As Grealish dropped his shoulder, Smith launched into a cynical, heavy tackle from behind, sending the Villa captain sprawling across the turf!
