Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 : Into the Cursed Cave

The entrance to the cave smelled of damp earth and decay. Akira Kurose tightened the straps of his backpack, feeling the weight of anticipation pressing down on him. Megumi led the way, shadow wolves moving silently alongside him, their eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of movement. Nobara followed, hammer ready, footsteps echoing softly against jagged rocks.

"This cave… it's not just dark," Megumi whispered, his voice low. "The cursed energy here… it's dense, like it has weight. Be careful. One wrong step and…" He didn't finish the sentence, but Akira understood.

Akira's heart thumped. His Echo energy pulsed faintly in response, reacting to the aura of the cave. He had encountered curses before, but nothing like this. The walls seemed to absorb light, swallowing their shadows whole. A cold draft carried whispers that weren't there—hints of screams, twisted laughter, fleeting glimpses of shapes that weren't real.

The deeper they went, the heavier the air became. Every step was met with resistance, as if the cave itself opposed them. The shadows stretched unnaturally, writhing along the walls like living serpents.

Suddenly, a deep growl echoed through the tunnels. Nobara froze. Megumi signaled for silence. The growl repeated, closer this time, vibrating through the rock beneath their feet.

A massive form emerged from the darkness: a cursed creature, grotesque and hulking, its body covered in slick black veins that pulsed with malice. Its arms were too long, ending in jagged claws, and its face was an endless maw filled with teeth.

Akira's stomach churned. "This… this is huge."

"Don't panic," Megumi instructed. "Observe its movement first."

Akira nodded, though sweat slicked his palms. The Echo energy flared as instinct took over. He mirrored Megumi's stance, feeling his aura align with the rhythm of the curse. Every twitch of its claws, every tilt of its head, he could predict—even if only for a moment.

The creature lunged. Shadow wolves intercepted, biting and slashing at the cursed flesh. Nobara swung her hammer, smashing into its arm, sparks of cursed energy erupting where the blows landed. The cave shook with each impact, dust raining from above.

Akira leaped forward. He extended his hands, Echo surging through him. He copied the cursed creature's striking pattern from a fraction of a second earlier, twisting his body to dodge and counter. The thrill of the copy was intoxicating, but his body screamed in protest. Echo energy drained him rapidly—muscles trembling, lungs burning.

"You're stronger than you look," the cursed voice growled, resonating in Akira's mind. "But strength alone won't save you."

Akira's eyes narrowed. He couldn't just dodge—he had to act. Channeling Echo fully, he thrust forward, striking the creature where its energy pulsed most violently. A shockwave rippled through the cave, shaking rocks loose from above. The creature roared, staggering back, but the cavern seemed alive, almost feeding on its pain.

Megumi took advantage of the opening, summoning shadow wolves that bit and tore at its legs, forcing it to stumble. Nobara didn't relent, hammer swinging with precise, brutal arcs. Every attack created a resonance, feeding Akira's Echo, allowing him to anticipate the creature's next move.

For a moment, everything felt in sync: their attacks, the cursed movements, the Echo energy responding in real time. Akira could feel himself learning, adapting, his senses stretched to the limit. But the curse was relentless, each strike sharper, faster, more chaotic.

A sudden tremor knocked him off balance. Dust and small rocks fell from the ceiling. The cursed creature roared louder, feeding off the cave's energy. Shadows shifted unnaturally, and whispers grew louder, echoing with distorted laughter. Akira could feel his Echo energy nearing its limit. One more strike, and he would collapse.

He glanced at Megumi and Nobara. They were straining too, but still standing. They needed him. They depended on him.

Summoning every ounce of strength, Akira focused. Echo energy surged like a tidal wave. He moved faster, predicting the cursed creature's next strike before it even fully formed. Channeling the copied motion, he landed a decisive blow on its chest. Black veins ruptured, sparks of cursed energy erupting violently. The creature fell to its knees, screeching in pain.

The cave trembled as though protesting the attack. Shadows recoiled, writhing violently, then slowly settled. Silence descended, heavy and suffocating.

Akira dropped to the ground, gasping for air. His body was trembling, muscles screaming in exhaustion. Megumi approached cautiously.

"You did well," he said quietly. "Not many could control Echo under pressure like that."

Nobara wiped sweat from her brow. "Yeah… but don't think it's over. That curse was just the beginning. The deeper we go, the stronger it gets."

Akira nodded. He had survived, but the taste of true cursed energy lingered in his mouth—raw, dark, intoxicating, and dangerous.

They advanced further into the cave, each step heavier than the last. Whispers followed them, shadows curling around their feet, and somewhere deep below, something waited. Something that even Sukuna would notice.

Cliffhanger: As Akira stepped over a jagged stone, a pulse of cursed energy exploded beneath him. From the darkness, glowing eyes reflected back, watching, calculating. The real test had only begun.
