Chapter 4 - The Glitch and the Grunt

The stench of rust and stale blood clung to Ren's nostrils, thick and metallic—a constant, nauseating companion in the humid air of the Catacombs.

His vision was no longer the blurry kaleidoscope it had been before.

Now it was worse.

Now it was filled with code.

Every stone, every damp patch along the walls, every faint glimmer hidden in the shadows pulsed with an ethereal glow. Lines of raw data flowed across his sight like a living overlay.

[STRUCT_WALL_STONE_001][ENV_HUMIDITY_LEVEL: 78%][LIGHT_SOURCE_FADE: 0.003 lux]

It was overwhelming.

The Codebreaker Protocol System, awakened by his mother's locket, had torn open the skin of reality itself.

Ren felt like a madman—seeing the bones of the world beneath its flesh.

His head throbbed violently. Not just from the betrayal or the impact of the fall, but from the sheer computational noise flooding his senses.

He forced himself upright. Every muscle screamed in protest.

A glance at his arm made him wince. A deep gash ran across his forearm, still leaking sluggish blood.

[ENTITY_REN_HEALTH: 47%][CONDITION: Laceration (Minor)][SUGGESTED_ACTION: Apply [Syntax Error: Self-Heal Refresh]]

The prompt floated in front of him.

Ren stared at it, trembling.

He had tried it once already—half in panic, half in desperation when the pain had threatened to swallow him whole.

A faint green glow had wrapped around his arm. The bleeding had slowed, the wound partially knitting itself together.

It wasn't true healing.

More like forcing reality to fast-forward a few seconds of recovery.

He focused again.

"Self-Heal… Refresh."

The words felt strange leaving his mouth.

A jolt of energy surged through him like static electricity.

Green light spread across the wound.

The gash tightened, the flesh pulling together until only a thin pale scar remained.

The pain faded to a dull ache.

[ENTITY_REN_HEALTH: 55%]

Ren exhaled slowly.

It worked.

A tiny flicker of triumph stirred inside him—quickly drowned by fear.

This was real.

He was broken.

Glitched.

But somehow… powerful.

He staggered forward through the winding tunnels. His footsteps echoed through the cavernous dark.

The air grew colder.

Sickly green light leaked through cracks in the ceiling, illuminating jagged stalactites that resembled petrified fangs.

Ahead, a collapsed pile of rubble blocked a narrow passage.

[OBSTRUCTION_COLLAPSED_ROCK: HIGH][SUGGESTED_ACTION: Apply [Cheat Code: Object Despawn]]

"Object… Despawn?"

Ren stared at the rocks.

They looked heavy. Impossible to move alone.

But if the System suggested it…

He focused.

Visualizing the stone dissolving into code.

This was harder than the heal.

His temples throbbed as he concentrated.

The locket pulsed against his chest.

A faint blue glow wrapped around the largest boulder.

Then—

It began to pixelate.

Stone broke apart into shimmering particles, dissolving into the air like fading light.

The rest of the rubble shifted with a grinding sound, settling into a smaller mound.

Ren climbed over it, shaking from exhaustion.

But he had done it.

He had rewritten reality.

The passage opened into a cavern thick with fungi.

Bioluminescent mushrooms cast an eerie glow across the chamber. Massive toadstools bulged from the ground like deflated organs.

A deep growl rolled through the air.

Ren froze.

[ENTITY_CAVE_STALKER: ELITE][THREAT_LEVEL: HIGH][WEAKNESS: SONIC_FREQUENCY_DISRUPTION]

His heart slammed against his ribs.

Elite.

High threat.

The Cave Stalker stepped out from behind a cluster of giant mushrooms.

Six legs.

Thick chitin armor.

Glowing red eyes.

A maw lined with razor teeth.

It growled again, tilting its head as if sensing his fear.

Ren slowly backed away.

Sonic frequency disruption.

What did that even mean?

The creature lunged.

Ren dove sideways.

A claw ripped through the air where his head had been.

He slammed into the ground hard.

Pain flared through his ribs.

The Stalker turned for another strike—

Then suddenly something slammed into its flank.

A blur of steel.

A massive sword buried deep in the creature's side.

The monster shrieked.

A grizzled man in battered leather armor tore the blade free with a grunt.

"Get out of the way, kid!" he roared.

"Unless you want to be lunch!"

Ren scrambled back.

The System scanned the newcomer.

[ENTITY_KAITO: PLAYER][LEVEL: UNKNOWN][CLASS: BERSERKER (EST.)][ALIGNMENT: NEUTRAL]

Kaito moved like a veteran predator.

His greatsword became a storm of brutal strikes.

The Stalker lashed back, claws screeching across stone.

Kaito ducked and drove the blade upward into its abdomen.

"Soft spots!" Ren shouted.

"It's weak under the shell!"

Kaito grunted.

"No shit! Now either help or shut up!"

Ren clenched his fists.

Sonic disruption.

He scanned the room.

Then he saw them.

Crystal formations along the cavern wall.

[ENV_CRYSTAL_RESONATOR_001]

A new prompt appeared.

[CHEAT_CODE: RESONATOR_OVERLOAD (TEMP)]

"The crystals!" Ren yelled.

"They resonate!"

Kaito shot him a confused look.

"What?!"

But Ren was already focusing.

The locket flared hot.

The crystals began glowing brighter.

Their hum grew louder.

Higher.

Sharper.

The Stalker froze mid-attack.

"The sound!" Kaito barked.

"It's stunning it!"

He plunged his sword into the creature's joint.

The crystals screamed with unbearable pitch—

Then exploded.

A shockwave of sonic energy blasted through the cavern.

The Stalker convulsed violently.

Cracks spread across its armor.

It collapsed.

Its health bar dropped to zero.

Silence returned.

Ren sagged against the wall.

He had helped.

Kaito wiped blood from his blade.

He approached slowly.

"What in the blazes was that, kid?"

He eyed Ren carefully.

"You're not a Player."

His gaze dropped to the locket.

"You're one of the Unseen. A Non-Player."

Ren hesitated.

"I… see the code," he said quietly.

"I can manipulate glitches."

Kaito snorted.

"Sounds like nonsense."

But his eyes said otherwise.

"Still… that crystal blast wasn't normal."

He rested his sword on his shoulder.

"Name's Kaito."

He nodded toward Ren.

"You?"

"Ren."

Kaito studied him.

"So you can make rocks disappear and break monsters with sound glitches."

He smirked faintly.

"That's new."

Ren pointed toward the rubble passage.

"I used Object Despawn there."

Kaito walked over and kicked the stones.

"Well I'll be damned."

He turned back.

"So what's a Non-Player doing this deep?"

Ren's voice tightened.

"I was betrayed."

"Left here to die."

His fingers closed around the locket.

"My mother left me this. It activated the system."

Kaito's expression softened slightly.

"Guild betrayal, huh."

He sighed.

"Happens more than it should."

He glanced toward a pitch-black corridor.

"That passage ahead is a Dead Zone."

Ren followed his gaze.

To him, it looked worse.

A knot of corrupted code churned inside the tunnel.

[ZONE_CORRUPTION: EXTREME][WARNING: REALITY_INTEGRITY_COMPROMISED]

The locket pulsed painfully.

Almost pulling him toward it.

Kaito spoke quietly.

"Been trying to get past that for days."

"Everyone who enters… disappears."

Ren stared into the corrupted passage.

A reckless idea formed.

"Maybe… I can debug it."

Kaito looked at him sharply.

"Debug a reality breach?"

He shook his head.

"You're insane."

But hope flickered in his tired eyes.

"If you can actually do it… it might be our way out."

He gripped his sword.

"But I don't babysit."

"You pull your weight or you die."

Ren nodded.

"I'm with you."

The locket pulsed warmly.

Kaito started toward the Dead Zone.

"Alright then, glitch-kid."

"Let's see if you can break the world."

They stepped closer.

Reality began to warp.

Walls twisted.

Stone dissolved into streaming data.

A massive red alert filled Ren's vision.

[CORE_SYSTEM_ERROR: REALITY_COHERENCE CRITICAL][PRIMARY_GLITCH_POINT DETECTED][UNSTABLE REALITY FRAGMENTS IMMINENT]

The passage suddenly imploded in a flash of white light.

A roar shook the entire Catacombs.

Then something emerged.

A colossal creature formed from churning static and corrupted code.

Multiple limbs.

Burning red eyes.

Cold intelligence.

Kaito's voice dropped to a whisper.

"By the Abyss…"

"What in the glitching hell is that?"

Ren's system answered.
