The northern road gradually narrowed as Ardent City disappeared behind them.
What had begun as a wide trade route slowly became a rough dirt path winding through open fields and scattered groves of trees. The sounds of the city faded with every mile until only the wind and distant birds filled the air.
Kael adjusted the strap of his travel pack as they walked.
"Okay," he said after a while, "I'm officially feeling the weight of this thing."
Lyria glanced back at him with an amused expression.
"It's been two hours."
"Two hours with climbing gear."
She laughed.
"You'll survive."
Lyra walked beside Kael, her pace steady and controlled. Unlike Lyria's relaxed stride or Kael's occasional adjustments, Lyra moved with quiet efficiency.
She noticed him shifting the pack again.
"The weight distribution is slightly off," she said.
Kael blinked.
"What?"
"Your rope coil is hanging too low."
She stepped closer and adjusted the knot holding the rope to his pack frame.
"Try now."
Kael shifted his shoulders.
"…Okay, that's actually better."
Lyra nodded.
"Proper packing makes long travel significantly easier."
Lyria called from ahead of them.
"See? Practical twin."
Kael chuckled.
"And you're the chaotic one."
"Exactly."
They continued along the road as the sun climbed higher in the sky.
For the first part of the journey the land remained relatively calm. Rolling grasslands stretched across the horizon with only occasional clusters of trees.
Farmhouses appeared every few miles, though most of them were distant enough that the trio simply passed by without stopping.
Around midday they reached a small wooden bridge crossing a narrow river.
Lyria leaned against the railing and looked down at the water.
"Perfect."
Kael frowned.
"For what?"
"Lunch."
Lyra already seemed to agree.
She set her pack down beside the bridge and began unpacking rations.
Kael followed suit.
"You two plan stops fast."
Lyria sat on the railing and kicked her legs slightly.
"Adventuring rule number one."
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"There are rules?"
"Of course."
She held up a finger.
"Eat when you can."
Another finger.
"Rest when you can."
Then she pointed at him.
"And never walk into a dungeon hungry."
Kael laughed.
"Fair advice."
Lyra handed him a wrapped portion of dried meat and bread.
"Travel rations are simple but effective."
Kael took a bite.
Not gourmet, but filling.
They ate quietly for a few minutes while the river flowed steadily beneath the bridge.
After finishing, Kael leaned back against the wooden railing and stretched his arms.
"So we're what… halfway to our first camp?"
Lyra nodded.
"Yes."
Lyria hopped off the railing.
"If we keep this pace we'll reach the forest edge before sunset."
Kael looked toward the northern horizon.
The distant mountains were slightly more visible now.
Still far away.
But clearly growing larger.
They packed their supplies again and continued down the road.
As the afternoon passed, the landscape slowly began to change.
The open plains gave way to thicker vegetation. Taller trees began appearing along the roadside, and the path itself became more uneven.
By late afternoon they reached the edge of a wide forest.
Kael stopped walking for a moment.
"Well… that's new."
Lyria stretched her arms.
"Welcome to the Northern Wilds."
Lyra studied the treeline carefully.
"This forest marks the halfway point to the mountains."
Kael looked at the dense canopy.
"So we're camping here?"
"Yes," Lyra said.
"Traveling through the forest at night would increase the risk of monster encounters."
Lyria shrugged.
"And tripping over roots."
"Also that."
They stepped off the road and moved a short distance into a small clearing between the trees.
The ground was relatively flat and sheltered by thick branches overhead.
Kael dropped his pack.
"This works."
Lyria immediately started gathering fallen branches.
"Campfire time."
Lyra began unpacking their supplies.
Within minutes the clearing had transformed into a simple but functional campsite.
A small fire crackled gently in the center.
Three bedrolls were arranged around it.
Kael sat down with a relieved sigh.
"I'm starting to understand why adventurers like campfires."
Lyria tossed another stick into the flames.
"Warmth, light, food, and monster deterrent."
Kael blinked.
"Monster deterrent?"
Lyra nodded.
"Many creatures avoid fire."
"Well that's comforting."
The sky above the trees slowly darkened as evening settled over the forest.
Crickets began chirping.
The wind moved softly through the branches.
Lyria leaned back against a tree trunk and looked across the fire at Kael.
"So," she said, "first real expedition together."
Kael smiled slightly.
"Feels that way."
Lyra sat quietly beside him.
"Our previous encounters were reactive."
Kael nodded.
"Dungeon, ambush, survival stuff."
"Exactly."
Lyria tilted her head thoughtfully.
"This time we're choosing the danger."
Kael looked into the fire.
"That's a weird way to put it."
"But accurate," Lyra said.
Silence settled for a moment as the fire crackled softly.
Kael eventually spoke again.
"Can I ask something?"
Lyria shrugged.
"You usually do."
He looked at the twins.
"You two have been adventuring longer than I have."
"That's not hard," Lyria said.
"I literally started yesterday."
Lyra smiled faintly.
"Your question?"
Kael hesitated.
Then asked quietly.
"Are fortress-class dungeons really that dangerous?"
The twins exchanged a glance.
Lyria answered first.
"Yes."
Lyra followed more calmly.
"They are essentially small ecosystems of hostile mana."
Kael frowned slightly.
"Meaning?"
Lyra explained carefully.
"In smaller dungeons, monsters exist in limited numbers."
"But fortress-class dungeons generate creatures continuously."
Lyria added.
"And the deeper you go, the stronger they get."
Kael leaned back.
"So we're walking into a magical monster factory."
"More or less," Lyria said.
He thought about that for a moment.
Then laughed quietly.
"You know what's funny?"
"What?" Lyria asked.
"I'm still excited."
Lyra looked at him thoughtfully.
"That is a good sign."
"Why?"
"Because fear without curiosity leads to hesitation."
Lyria grinned.
"And hesitation gets adventurers killed."
Kael nodded slowly.
"Good point."
The fire crackled as the night grew darker.
Eventually Lyria stretched and stood up.
"Alright. Sleep rotation."
Kael blinked.
"That's a thing too?"
"Of course."
She pointed to herself.
"I'll take first watch."
Lyra nodded.
"I will take second."
Kael sighed.
"Guess I'm third."
Lyria grinned.
"Welcome to adventuring."
Kael lay down on his bedroll and stared up at the faint stars visible through the tree branches.
The resonance bond hummed gently in the back of his mind.
Steady.
Comforting.
Somewhere beyond the forest, the North Ridge Mountains waited.
And deep inside those mountains…
A dungeon powerful enough to require twenty adventurers.
Kael closed his eyes.
Tomorrow they would be one day closer to it.
