Chapter 6 - Echoes Beneath the Stone

Silence.

For the first time since entering the depths beneath the Dwarf Kingdom, there was no sound of battle.

No roars.

No collapsing stone.

Only the faint echo of dripping water…

…and the slow breathing of Team 18.

The massive corpse of the corrupted creature lay motionless in the center of the chamber.

Black veins across its body had begun to fade.

The demonic energy that once pulsed through it… was gone.

Aurelia dropped onto a nearby rock, exhaling deeply.

"…I hate underground missions."

Lucien cleaned his blade calmly.

"You were enjoying it earlier."

"That was before the giant nightmare monster tried to crush me."

Lyrielle knelt near the shattered altar.

The dark symbols carved into it were beginning to lose their glow.

"…The corruption is fading."

Seraphina stood beside her.

"…The source has been weakened."

Kael said nothing.

He stood a few steps away.

Looking at the altar.

That strange warmth in his chest… hadn't disappeared.

It had only grown quieter.

Like something waiting.

---

The Broken Ritual

Lucien approached the altar slowly.

"This wasn't random."

He traced one of the carved symbols carefully.

"A structured ritual."

Seraphina nodded.

"…Demonic amplification."

Lyrielle added,

"They were using this place to spread corruption through the mountain."

Aurelia frowned.

"So destroying the monster stopped it?"

Lucien shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the dark tunnels beyond the chamber.

"We interrupted it."

"…We didn't end it."

The weight of those words settled over the group.

Kael finally spoke.

"That guy…"

"The cloaked one…"

"…he let us win."

Seraphina's eyes shifted slightly.

"…Yes."

Lucien didn't deny it.

"He was observing."

"Testing."

Lyrielle looked uneasy.

"…Then this wasn't the main plan."

Lucien's voice lowered.

"No."

"It was only the beginning."

---

The Quiet Reaction

Kael stepped closer to the altar.

The faint golden light flickered again for a brief moment.

Only he seemed to notice it.

His fingers brushed against the stone surface.

For a split second—

The world went silent.

Then—

A whisper echoed deep inside his mind.

"You walk where they once stood."

Kael froze.

His breath caught slightly.

A battlefield flashed in his thoughts.

Warriors.

Dragons.

Endless demons.

Two figures standing at the center of it all—

Then—

The vision vanished.

Kael pulled his hand back quickly.

"…What…"

Lyrielle immediately noticed.

"Kael?"

He turned to her.

"…I'm fine."

But his voice wasn't steady.

Seraphina was watching him again.

Carefully.

That energy…

It wasn't normal.

And whatever it was—

It was connected to something far older than the academy.

---

Return to the Surface

The journey back through the tunnels felt different.

Quieter.

Heavier.

The danger had passed.

But the questions remained.

When Team 18 finally emerged from the depths and returned to the city, the glow of the crystal-lit halls felt almost unreal.

Dwarven guards rushed toward them.

"You're back!"

"What happened down there?!"

Lucien stepped forward calmly.

"The corruption source has been disrupted."

Lyrielle added,

"But it wasn't fully destroyed."

Seraphina spoke next.

"There is an external force involved."

The guards quickly escorted them back to the council hall.

---

The Council's Decision

Elder Thorgar listened in complete silence as they explained everything.

The corrupted monsters.

The ritual altar.

The cloaked man.

And the mention of demonic involvement.

The chamber remained quiet for a long time after they finished.

Finally, Thorgar spoke.

"…We owe you a great debt."

He looked at each of them carefully.

"You have prevented a disaster."

Aurelia smiled slightly.

"You're welcome."

Lucien crossed his arms.

"This isn't over."

Thorgar nodded.

"We know."

His expression hardened.

"We will seal the deeper tunnels and begin our own investigation."

Seraphina added quietly,

"You should increase your defenses."

Lyrielle looked at the elder.

"That man will return."

Kael remained silent.

But deep down…

He knew that too.

---

Night in the Mountain City

That night, for the first time since arriving…

Team 18 rested inside the dwarven city.

The noise of the forges echoed faintly through the halls.

But their room was quiet.

Peaceful.

Kael stood alone near a small balcony carved into the stone wall.

From there, he could see the glowing lights of the underground city.

Lyrielle stepped beside him.

"You've been quiet."

Kael smiled faintly.

"Just thinking."

She leaned against the railing beside him.

"About what?"

Kael hesitated.

"…That place."

"That altar."

Lyrielle looked at him softly.

"…Something happened, didn't it?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Then quietly—

"…I saw something."

Her expression changed slightly.

"What?"

"…I don't know."

Kael looked at his hand.

"But it felt…"

"…familiar."

Lyrielle didn't laugh.

Didn't question him.

She just stayed beside him.

Then softly said—

"Whatever it is…"

"…you don't have to face it alone."

Kael looked at her.

For a moment…

The noise of the city faded.

The tension.

The mission.

The danger.

Everything felt distant.

"…Thanks."

Lyrielle smiled.

"…Idiot."

But her voice was softer than usual.

Warmer.

---

The Silent Realization

From the doorway behind them—

Seraphina stood quietly.

Watching.

She had come to speak to Kael.

But stopped when she saw them together.

The way Lyrielle stood close to him.

The way he looked… calmer around her.

Something inside Seraphina tightened.

That unfamiliar feeling again.

Stronger this time.

She turned away silently.

Without saying a word.

---

The Shadow Above

High above the city…

In the darkest part of the mountain…

The cloaked man stood alone.

Looking down at the glowing dwarven capital.

"…They survived."

A shadow formed beside him.

A demon's voice echoed.

"Unexpected?"

The man smiled faintly.

"No."

"…Encouraging."

His eyes glowed brighter.

"That boy…"

"…Kael."

"He reacted to the altar."

The demon's voice deepened.

"…Then it's confirmed."

The man's smile widened slowly.

"Yes."

"…The bloodline lives."

---

The Departure

The next morning, Team 18 prepared to leave the Dwarf Kingdom.

Their mission had been marked as a success.

But none of them felt like it was truly over.

Lucien stood near the exit.

"This changes things."

Seraphina nodded.

"…Yes."

Lyrielle looked at Kael.

"Back to the academy?"

Kael smiled slightly.

"Yeah."

"But I feel like…"

"…things are just getting started."

Aurelia grinned.

"Good."

"I was getting bored."
