Chapter 1 - THE DOWNLOAD

Rain fell in thin silver lines over the city of Kairoth.

Streetlights flickered weakly against the storm, casting long shadows across empty roads. The wind pushed old newspapers along the pavement, and the occasional rumble of thunder echoed through the dark sky.

Most people were asleep.

But Arin Vale wasn't.

He sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the glowing screen of his phone.

His room was small—barely large enough for a bed, a desk, and a cracked wooden shelf filled with old books and game cartridges. Posters of fantasy games covered the walls, peeling slightly at the corners.

Arin rubbed his tired eyes.

"Another boring night," he muttered.

School had been the same as always—teachers talking endlessly about exams, classmates pretending they understood everything, and Arin sitting quietly in the back of the room wondering why life felt like an unfinished game level.

He sighed and opened the Play Store.

Scrolling.

Scrolling.

Scrolling.

Every game looked the same.

"Pay to win… pay to win… another pay to win," he grumbled.

Then something strange appeared.

A game with no reviews.

No developer name.

No description.

Just a black icon with a single symbol:

A crimson crown.

Arin frowned.

"Never seen this before."

He tapped it.

The screen changed instantly.

THE GAME THAT EATS REALITY

Start the game.

Change the world.

One player will rule.

Arin blinked.

"Okay… that's creepy."

There was only one button.

DOWNLOAD

No screenshots.

No gameplay previews.

Nothing.

He hesitated for a moment.

Then shrugged.

"Why not."

He tapped the button.

The download bar appeared.

But instead of slowly filling like a normal download…

It jumped straight to 100%.

The screen went black.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the phone vibrated violently in his hand.

The screen lit up again.

But it wasn't the Play Store anymore.

It was the game.

WELCOME, PLAYER.

USERNAME DETECTED: ARIN VALE

LEVEL: 0

STATUS: UNAWAKENED

Arin leaned forward.

"Okay… that was fast."

The interface was simple. A dark background with glowing red text.

Three options appeared:

START GAME

MISSIONS

PLAYERS NEARBY

Arin tapped Players Nearby.

The screen loaded.

Then displayed a number.

0 PLAYERS DETECTED

He shrugged.

"Guess no one else downloaded it yet."

He went back and tapped MISSIONS.

A single mission appeared.

MISSION 1

Walk outside your house.

Reward: 10 EXP

Failure: None

Arin stared at the screen.

"That's… stupid."

He almost closed the app.

But something about it felt oddly compelling.

"Fine," he said. "I'll play along."

He grabbed his hoodie and walked to the door.

The hallway outside his room was quiet.

His parents were asleep.

He slipped on his shoes and stepped outside.

The rain had stopped.

The street was empty.

As soon as he stepped onto the sidewalk—

his phone vibrated.

MISSION COMPLETE

+10 EXP

LEVEL UP

LEVEL: 1

NEW MISSION UNLOCKED

Arin blinked.

"Okay… that's actually cool."

The next mission appeared.

MISSION 2

Walk to the nearest convenience store.

Distance: 240 meters

Reward: 20 EXP

He laughed quietly.

"So it's basically a walking simulator."

Still, he started walking.

The night air felt cold and refreshing after hours inside his room. The streetlights buzzed softly above him as he moved down the sidewalk.

Halfway to the store—

his phone vibrated again.

But this time it wasn't a mission notification.

It was something else.

NEW PLAYER DETECTED

Distance: 52 meters

Arin stopped walking.

"What?"

He looked around.

The street was empty.

Or at least…

it looked empty.

Then he noticed someone standing across the road.

A girl.

Long dark hair.

Black jacket.

She was staring directly at him.

And in her hand—

a phone glowing with the same crimson light.

Arin's stomach tightened.

She slowly raised her phone.

At the exact same moment—

his screen changed.

PLAYER ENCOUNTER

Enemy Player Detected

Name: Unknown

Level: 2

Rule: Only one player can rule.

Arin's heart started beating faster.

"What kind of game is this…?"

The girl smiled faintly.

Then her phone flashed.

And suddenly—

the streetlight above Arin exploded.

Glass rained down around him.

Arin stumbled backward in shock.

"What the—?!"

His phone vibrated again.

WARNING

Players can affect reality.

Survive.

Level up.

Or be erased.

Arin slowly looked up.

The girl across the street was still smiling.

And she was already walking toward him.
