Chapter 1 - The Hand That Appeared in the Dark

One night, I was returning home from my tuition classes, just like I did every other day. My house was about a half-hour walk from the tuition center. Usually, I walked with a few of my friends, and the journey felt normal and easy. We would talk, laugh, and sometimes complain about homework while walking together.

But that day was different.

All my friends had left early because they had some work to do at home. I stayed a little longer at the tuition center to finish some notes. When I finally left, the road outside was already dark and quiet.

So that night, I had to walk home alone.

The path to my house passed through a small forest. During the day, the forest didn't feel scary at all. Sunlight would pass through the leaves of the tall trees, birds would sing on the branches, and sometimes villagers walked along that same path to reach the nearby market.

But at night, the forest felt completely different.

Once darkness covered the area, the same forest became silent and mysterious. The cheerful sounds of birds disappeared, and the place felt strangely empty.

That night the sky was covered with thick clouds, and the moon was hidden behind them. Because of that, there was very little light around me.

The narrow path through the forest looked darker than usual.

I walked slowly, carefully watching where I stepped.

I was extremely tired that day. After studying for hours at tuition, my legs felt heavy and my body felt weak. Every step I took felt more difficult than the last one.

When I finally reached the middle of the forest, I noticed a big old tree standing beside the path. It was one of the biggest trees in that forest. Its thick branches spread widely, forming a dark shadow on the ground below.

Under the tree, there was enough space to sit comfortably.

At that moment, I felt like I needed to rest for a few minutes before continuing my journey.

So I walked toward the tree and sat down under it.

At that time, I didn't have a flashlight with me. The only thing I had was a small lighter that I sometimes used to see the path in the dark.

I took the lighter out of my pocket and lit it.

A small flame appeared, flickering gently in the darkness.

The weak light illuminated the ground around me and part of the tree trunk. The branches above me created strange shadows on the ground. The shadows looked like moving shapes, which made the forest seem even more mysterious.

After looking around for a moment, I turned off the lighter and sat quietly in the darkness.

The forest around me was incredibly silent.

The only sounds I could hear were the chirping of crickets and the soft rustling of leaves moving in the cool night breeze.

The wind passed slowly through the trees, making the leaves whisper softly. It almost sounded like the forest was quietly talking to itself.

For a few minutes, I simply sat there, trying to relax and rest.

Then suddenly…

I felt something touch my cheek.

The touch was extremely gentle, almost like someone brushing their fingers lightly across my face.

I immediately became alert.

For a moment, I thought maybe it was just a leaf blown by the wind.

But then I felt the touch again.

This time I was sure that something had actually touched me.

My heart began beating faster.

Slowly and nervously, I raised my hand and grabbed whatever had touched my face.

It felt like a hand.

But it didn't feel like a normal human hand.

It was incredibly soft, almost like touching a sponge. The skin felt strange and smooth, but the fingers had long nails that lightly pressed against my skin.

A cold chill ran down my spine.

I quickly pushed the hand away from my face.

For a few seconds, everything became quiet again.

The forest returned to its silent state.

I tried to calm myself down.

Maybe I was just imagining things, I told myself.

But before I could relax…

The hand came back.

This time, it slowly rested on my chest.

Now I was completely terrified.

My breathing became fast and my entire body felt cold.

My mind started filling with frightening thoughts.

Was someone hiding behind the tree?

Was it some kind of animal?

Or could it be something supernatural?

The darkness around me made everything feel even more frightening.

In that lonely forest, where no one else was around, every possibility seemed real.

I quickly gathered all the courage I had.

Then I pushed the hand away with force.

Immediately, I took the lighter out of my pocket and lit it again.

The small flame suddenly brightened the darkness around me.

My eyes quickly scanned the area.

I looked behind the tree.

I looked at the bushes.

I even looked up at the branches above me.

But there was no one there.

No person.

No animal.

Nothing.

Only tall trees stood silently around me, their branches moving gently in the wind.

The shadows moved slowly on the ground, but there was absolutely no sign of anyone who could have touched me.

My fear increased even more.

I didn't want to stay there even for another second.

I quickly stood up and began walking toward my house as fast as I could.

Every small sound behind me made me feel like something was following me.

My heart kept pounding loudly in my chest.

But I didn't dare to look back.

I just kept walking faster and faster until I finally saw the lights of my house in the distance.

When I reached home and stepped inside, I finally felt a little safer.

My grandmother was sitting in the living room.

When she saw my face, she immediately noticed that something was wrong.

"You look frightened," she said. "What happened?"

Still breathing heavily, I sat down and told her everything that had happened in the forest.

I explained how I had rested under the tree, how something had touched my cheek, how I grabbed the strange soft hand with long nails, and how there was no one there when I lit the lighter.

My grandmother listened carefully without interrupting.

After I finished the story, she stayed silent for a moment.

Then she smiled gently.

"Don't be scared," she said calmly.

"It probably wasn't a human hand."

I looked at her with confusion.

She continued, "In forests, bats often fly very low at night. One of them must have flown close to you in the darkness. Its wings probably brushed against your face and chest."

Her explanation sounded reasonable.

Slowly, my fear began to fade.

Maybe it really was just a bat flying near me in the darkness.

But even today…

Whenever I pass through that forest at night, I still remember that strange moment under the tree.

And sometimes…

I still feel as if someone is quietly watching me from the darkness.

👻 And that night remains one of the strangest experiences of my life.
