Chapter 2 - The Girl who walked into the woods

The Shadow Alpha

Chapter 1 — The Girl Who Walked Into the Woods

Everyone in Blackridge knew three things about the forest.

First… never enter it after dark.

Second… if you hear a howl that doesn't sound like a wolf, run.

And third…

If you feel like something is watching you, it probably is.

Elara Whitmore believed none of it.

She adjusted the strap of her bag and pushed through the thick forest branches, the cold night air brushing against her cheeks.

"Haunted forest," she muttered while scribbling in her small notebook. "Town rumors say dozens of people have disappeared here over the last century."

She rolled her eyes.

"Probably just bears."

Elara worked as a junior reporter for the tiny Blackridge Gazette, and if there was one thing she loved more than coffee, it was exposing ridiculous local myths.

Tonight's story?

The "monster" of Blackridge Forest.

The moon shone brightly above the tall pine trees, casting long shadows over the snow-covered ground.

But something about the woods felt… strange.

Too quiet.

Even the wind had stopped.

Elara frowned.

"Okay," she whispered. "That's a little creepy."

Crunch.

A twig snapped behind her.

She spun around.

"Hello?"

Nothing.

Only darkness between the trees.

Her heart began to beat a little faster.

Probably a deer.

Or a fox.

Or her imagination.

She turned back toward the trail—

And froze.

A man stood several feet away, leaning against a tree like he had been there the entire time.

Elara hadn't heard him approach.

Which was impossible.

The stranger was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed entirely in black. His dark hair fell slightly over his forehead, but it was his eyes that caught her attention.

They were silver.

Not gray.

Silver.

And they were staring directly at her.

"You shouldn't be here."

His voice was deep and calm, but there was something dangerous beneath it.

Elara crossed her arms.

"Funny," she said. "I was just thinking the same thing about you."

For a moment, the man didn't move.

Then he slowly pushed himself off the tree and stepped closer.

Something about his presence made the air feel heavier.

"You're in my territory."

Elara raised an eyebrow.

"Your territory? What are you, the owner of the forest?"

His lips twitched slightly.

Almost like he was amused.

But his eyes remained cold.

"No," he said quietly.

"I'm the reason people stay out of it."

A sudden chill ran down Elara's spine.

Somewhere deep in the forest…

A low howl echoed through the trees.

The man didn't react.

But Elara noticed something strange.

For just a moment…

His eyes glowed.

And the way he was looking at her now—

Wasn't human.
