Chapter 4 — The Runes of Weight
Hogwarts — Age of the Founders, Year 1
The dungeon air was heavy with the scent of stone and ancient magic. Below the castle, in a chamber hidden from prying eyes, I laid out the first gravity runes—symbols that would teach creatures balance, strength, and control beyond their natural limits.
The basilisk egg pulsed with curiosity, almost impatiently. It could sense the shift in magic, the new challenge waiting for it even before it had hatched.
Slytherin's voice echoed in the chamber.
"The egg will only respect discipline, not strength alone. This is the beginning of its education… and yours."
Stage 3 — Weighted Conditioning
I prepared weighted collars and scaled harnesses for the creatures I had already bonded with—the winged serpents, forest lizards, even a few of the Mooncalves who tolerated it.
"Every creature must learn control under pressure," I murmured in Parseltongue.
The serpents coiled around me, their tiny weights clinking softly. Mooncalves stumbled slightly, but their trust in me kept them steady.
"He tests us… not to break… but to teach… strange…" the basilisk egg thought.
Even unseen in its shell, the basilisk was aware. Every rune, every weight, every breath of magic reached it.
The Gravity Rune Grid
On the floor, I drew a lattice of glowing runes. Each one shifted gravity subtly when activated, forcing creatures to adapt their balance.
"Step carefully… feel the change… anticipate."
A winged serpent floated into the first square. Its wings beat harder, then adjusted, as if learning a new form of flight. Another serpent tried the second square and paused, hissing in challenge, then moved gracefully.
The basilisk egg throbbed. Its internal voice stirred:
"This… one… bends the world… and we… must learn…?"
It was beginning to understand that strength alone would not win respect—it was the combination of patience, precision, and guidance.
Hogwarts Observes Again
News of the gravity rune experiments reached the castle.
Gryffindors muttered: "Now he's bending the laws of nature… what next?"
Ravenclaws marveled: "This is applied magical physics… a new discipline entirely."
Hufflepuffs looked uneasy: "But are the creatures safe?"
Slytherins were eager: "He is teaching mastery… exactly as our founder would want."
Even some professors ventured closer, enchanted by the glowing runes and disciplined creatures moving carefully across them.
Parseltongue Dialogue — First Direct Egg Interaction
I knelt beside the egg, tracing runes gently on its surface. Its shell vibrated faintly as I whispered:
"My child… observe the power… feel it, but do not fear… you will grow stronger with this lesson."
The basilisk's first words reached me, though faint:
"Father… I… feel… strange… heavy… learning… yes… trust… yes…"
A thrill ran down my spine. The bond had deepened. The basilisk was no longer just a latent presence—it was aware, curious, and responding to my guidance.
Slytherin nodded, his eyes sharp.
"You are teaching it more than strength. You are teaching patience, adaptation, and respect. Few have ever begun this before hatching."
I smiled softly.
"This is only the beginning. One day, it will surpass all expectations… even yours."
