Chapter 1
Rain hammered against the tall glass windows of the Grand Crest Hotel, turning the city lights outside into blurred streaks of gold and white.
Inside the ballroom, laughter and music filled the air as the annual Wolfe Enterprises celebration continued.
Lena Carter stood near the corner of the room, clutching a glass of champagne she had barely touched. As the CEO's assistant, she had spent most of the evening making sure everything ran smoothly—greeting investors, fixing last-minute problems, and answering endless questions from employees.
Now that everything was finally calm, exhaustion slowly settled into her bones.
"Relax, Lena. The night is almost over," she murmured to herself.
Her gaze drifted across the luxurious room until it landed on the man standing near the balcony.
Adrian Wolfe.
The billionaire CEO of Wolfe Enterprises.
Tall, imposing, and dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, he stood slightly apart from the crowd. Even from across the room, his presence dominated everything around him.
Cold. Untouchable. Powerful.
Those were the words people always used to describe him.
Lena quickly looked away.
Working for Adrian for the past year had taught her one thing—distance was the safest place to be when it came to him.
But tonight was strange.
Maybe it was the music, or the soft glow of the lights, or the champagne she had forced herself to drink to calm her nerves.
Because for the first time since she started working here, Adrian's eyes suddenly met hers across the room.
Her heart skipped.
For a moment, neither of them looked away.
Then someone approached Adrian and the moment broke.
Lena exhaled slowly.
"Get a grip," she muttered.
She set her empty glass on a passing tray and slipped out of the ballroom, hoping to catch a few minutes of quiet before the event ended.
The hallway outside was silent compared to the noise inside.
Lena leaned against the wall and closed her eyes briefly.
"Long night?" a deep voice suddenly said behind her.
Her eyes flew open.
Adrian Wolfe stood only a few steps away.
Her heart nearly stopped.
"Mr. Wolfe," she said quickly, straightening. "I didn't realize you left the party."
His dark eyes studied her in a way that made her strangely nervous.
"You've been working nonstop all night," he said calmly. "Even CEOs notice things like that."
Lena blinked in surprise.
Adrian noticing her?
That had never happened before.
"It's my job," she replied softly.
For a moment, silence stretched between them.
Then Adrian stepped closer.
Too close.
The faint scent of his cologne filled the air, warm and dangerously distracting.
"Even assistants deserve a break," he said.
Lena's pulse raced.
Something about the way he was looking at her tonight felt different. Less cold. Less distant.
Almost… curious.
The elevator doors behind them slid open with a soft ding.
Adrian gestured toward it.
"Come."
She hesitated only for a second before stepping inside.
The doors closed.
For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.
The elevator hummed quietly as it began to move upward.
Then suddenly, the lights flickered.
The elevator jerked violently before coming to an abrupt stop.
Lena grabbed the railing to steady herself.
"What happened?" she whispered.
"Probably a power issue from the storm," Adrian replied calmly.
But the small space suddenly felt too quiet.
Too close.
Lena could feel the warmth of his presence beside her.
The tension in the elevator grew heavier with every second.
Then Adrian turned toward her.
His gaze slowly moved across her face as if he was seeing her for the first time.
"Lena," he said quietly.
The way he said her name sent a strange shiver down her spine.
"Yes?"
He stepped closer.
Her breath caught.
"Have you ever noticed," he said slowly, "how quiet the world becomes when everything else stops?"
Lena couldn't answer.
Because suddenly Adrian Wolfe was only inches away.
And the next moment…
He kissed her.
