The howl that echoed through the forest did not fade quickly. It stretched across the trees, rolling through the valley like a warning carried by the wind.
Kyra stood still.
Her eyes narrowed as she focused on the direction of the sound.
"That was not one of yours," Rowan said quietly.
"No," Kyra answered.
Her wolf shifted beneath her skin again, restless now.
The sound had not been a normal call.
It carried something deeper, something older.
Another rustle came from the trees.
Closer.
Rowan lifted his head slightly, listening.
"You feel that?" he asked.
Kyra nodded.
"Yes."
Something was moving through the woods.
Not running.
Not hunting.
Watching.
Waiting.
Kyra stepped forward slowly.
"Stay behind me," Rowan said.
She turned sharply toward him.
"I do not stay behind anyone."
His lips curved faintly.
"I noticed."
Another sound came.
Branches cracking softly.
Kyra's eyes locked on a cluster of dark trees ahead.
Her voice dropped.
"Someone is there."
Rowan did not move.
His posture remained calm, though his eyes sharpened.
"Come out," he said firmly.
Silence answered.
Then a shadow shifted.
A figure stepped into the moonlight.
A young wolf from Crescent Shadow.
Kyra recognized him immediately.
"Tarin," she said.
The young man looked nervous.
His eyes moved between Kyra and Rowan.
"I was sent to find you," he said.
Kyra frowned.
"By who?"
"The elders."
Rowan watched quietly.
"What happened?" Kyra asked.
Tarin swallowed.
"They called a gathering."
Kyra stiffened.
"Tonight?"
"Yes."
Her wolf stirred again.
That was not normal.
Pack gatherings were rarely called during Blood Moon nights.
Especially without warning.
Rowan crossed his arms.
"Did they say why?"
Tarin shook his head.
"No."
Kyra began walking.
"Then we are going."
Rowan fell into step beside her.
The forest path toward Crescent Shadow territory was narrow and silent.
Tarin walked ahead.
Kyra's mind was racing.
Something was wrong.
The elders never called sudden meetings without reason.
Rowan spoke quietly.
"You think this is connected."
Kyra nodded once.
"Yes."
"The presence we felt," Rowan said.
"Yes."
Rowan looked toward the sky.
The Blood Moon was brighter now.
Almost glowing.
Its silver light poured across the forest like liquid fire.
Tarin glanced back nervously.
"You both felt it too?"
Kyra looked at him.
"Felt what?"
"The air," he said.
"The forest has been strange all night."
Rowan spoke calmly.
"Explain."
Tarin slowed his steps.
"Animals left the area earlier."
Kyra frowned.
"All of them?"
"Yes."
"That never happens," she said.
"Exactly," Tarin replied.
They walked in silence for several minutes.
The deeper they moved into Crescent Shadow territory, the stronger Kyra felt the strange pull in her chest.
Her wolf was alert.
Restless.
Rowan noticed.
"You feel it more here," he said.
Kyra nodded.
"Yes."
"Something is wrong with the land."
Rowan studied the ground as they walked.
Then he stopped suddenly.
Kyra stopped beside him.
"What?"
Rowan pointed to the earth.
Scratches marked the dirt.
Deep claw marks.
Kyra crouched.
Her fingers touched the ground.
Cold.
Too cold.
"These are fresh," she said quietly.
Tarin looked confused.
"Fresh from what?"
Rowan answered.
"Something large."
Kyra stood slowly.
Her voice dropped lower.
"This was not made by a normal wolf."
Tarin's face paled.
"What do you mean?"
Rowan met Kyra's eyes.
"You said ancient things walk during Blood Moon nights."
Kyra nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"Perhaps one already has."
Tarin swallowed.
"That is not possible."
Kyra's voice was firm.
"Many things that seem impossible are real."
They continued walking.
Soon the trees began thinning.
The lights of Crescent Shadow village appeared ahead.
Several wolves were already gathered in the clearing.
Torches burned around the council circle.
The elders stood in the center.
Kyra stepped forward.
The crowd parted slightly as she approached.
Rowan remained close behind her.
One of the elders spoke.
"Kyra."
His voice was calm but serious.
"You have arrived."
Kyra looked around.
"Why was the gathering called?"
Another elder answered.
"The forest has changed tonight."
Kyra crossed her arms.
"We noticed."
Rowan stepped forward slightly.
"Something large moved through your territory."
Murmurs spread through the wolves.
The first elder nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Kyra's eyes narrowed.
"You already know."
"Yes."
"What was it?"
The elders exchanged glances.
Finally the oldest among them spoke.
"An ancient guardian."
The clearing fell silent.
Tarin looked confused again.
"A guardian of what?"
The elder looked at Kyra.
"Of power."
Kyra felt her chest tighten.
Rowan noticed.
"You mean her," he said quietly.
The elder nodded.
"Yes."
The crowd reacted immediately.
Wolves began whispering.
Kyra's voice was sharp.
"Enough."
Silence returned.
She looked directly at the elder.
"Explain."
The old wolf spoke slowly.
"The Blood Moon awakens ancient watchers."
Kyra listened carefully.
"They exist to observe powerful bloodlines."
Rowan spoke.
"And judge them."
The elder nodded.
"Yes."
Kyra's wolf stirred again.
"So one has come for me."
"Yes."
The elder did not hesitate.
The clearing remained quiet.
Every wolf was now watching Kyra.
Rowan stepped closer beside her.
"Has this happened before?" he asked.
The elder shook his head.
"Not for generations."
Kyra exhaled slowly.
"So what does it want?"
The elder's answer came calmly.
"To test you."
Tarin whispered.
"How?"
The elder looked toward the forest.
"We do not know."
Kyra felt the same presence again.
Watching.
Waiting.
Rowan leaned closer to her.
"Do you feel it now?"
"Yes," she whispered.
Stronger than before.
The elder continued.
"If the guardian accepts you, the power within your blood will awaken completely."
Kyra's eyes narrowed.
"And if it does not?"
The elder's voice remained calm.
"Then the guardian will destroy the threat."
Murmurs spread again.
Kyra's wolf growled quietly beneath her skin.
Rowan's gaze hardened.
"So the test is survival."
"Yes."
Kyra turned toward the forest.
The darkness beyond the trees seemed deeper now.
Almost alive.
Rowan spoke quietly beside her.
"You are not facing this alone."
Kyra did not look at him.
"You may not have a choice."
Another elder stepped forward.
"The test will happen before sunrise."
Kyra looked back.
"Tonight?"
"Yes."
The air in the clearing grew heavier.
Even the torches flickered strangely.
Tarin whispered again.
"Where will it happen?"
The elder pointed toward the deeper forest.
"The sacred valley."
Kyra nodded slowly.
She knew the place.
Every wolf in Crescent Shadow did.
It was ancient.
Untouched.
Rowan studied her face.
"You know it."
"Yes."
"Dangerous place."
"Yes."
The elder raised his voice.
"No wolf is allowed to follow."
The pack reacted immediately.
"What?"
"Why?"
"It is her test," the elder said.
"Only Kyra may face the guardian."
Rowan stepped forward instantly.
"That will not happen."
Every eye turned to him.
The elder looked calm.
"You are Northridge Alpha."
"Yes."
"This is Crescent Shadow tradition."
Rowan's voice hardened.
"I do not follow traditions that risk her life."
Kyra finally looked at him.
"Rowan."
He met her gaze.
"I am not leaving you alone."
Her wolf stirred again.
Not in anger.
Something else.
Something warmer.
But she remained firm.
"You may not have a choice."
The elder spoke again.
"The guardian accepts only the one it seeks."
Kyra understood immediately.
"If anyone else enters the valley…"
The elder finished.
"The test ends."
"And?"
"The guardian will attack."
Silence filled the clearing again.
Rowan clenched his jaw.
Kyra placed a hand on his arm.
"It is fine."
"No," he said quietly.
"It is not."
She spoke calmly.
"I have faced danger before."
"Not like this."
"No," she admitted.
"But it is still my path."
The forest wind moved through the clearing.
The Blood Moon hung high above them.
Watching.
Waiting.
Kyra looked toward the dark trees again.
The presence was stronger now.
Closer.
Rowan lowered his voice.
"When do you leave?"
The elder answered.
"Now."
Kyra inhaled slowly.
Her wolf was ready.
The entire pack watched her.
She turned toward the forest.
Rowan stepped beside her.
Their eyes met briefly.
"You come back," he said.
Kyra gave a small nod.
"I intend to."
Then she walked toward the darkness.
Toward the sacred valley.
Toward the ancient guardian waiting beneath the Blood Moon.
