The team emerged from the lower tunnels into the abandoned industrial district of Nova Juba. The city smelled of oil, metal, and rain. Neon lights flickered above, casting fractured shadows across the cracked streets.
Kai glanced around. "We need information on the next coordinates. Lira, what's the signal saying?"
Lira typed furiously on the portable console. "It's pointing toward multiple locations… and I think we're going to meet others. Diverse groups. People from all over—connected somehow to the signal."
Milo groaned. "Great. More strangers. Can't wait for the awkward introductions."
A distant roar echoed. From the shadows, a tall, broad-shouldered African man appeared, wielding a makeshift energy staff. His eyes were sharp, his stance confident.
"Finally," Kai muttered. "Someone who looks like they know what's going on."
The man grinned. "Name's Taye," he said, with a thick accent that rolled beautifully on every syllable. "And I heard someone calling for a miracle—or at least a plan that doesn't involve tripping over debris."
Milo whispered to Kai: "I like him. Already cooler than me."
Lira rolled her eyes. "We don't have time for ego contests. The signal is guiding us to… them."
A sudden flash from a nearby alley revealed a tall European woman, dressed in tactical gear, her blonde hair pulled into a tight braid. She raised an eyebrow at the team.
"Captain?" she asked in a clipped accent. "You're trespassing in restricted zones again. Honestly, someone needs to teach you protocol."
Milo muttered under his breath, "Ah, European discipline. My favorite kind of fun."
Kai ignored him. "We're following the signal. And apparently… it brought us together."
The European woman smirked. "I'm Astrid. And if the signal brought you here… I suppose you'll need a guide. Not that you'll survive without me."
From another alley, a slim Asian man stepped forward, carrying a device covered in blinking lights. "I'm Hiro," he said, adjusting his glasses. "I specialize in… making sure the quantum nodes don't explode. Not that you would know how to handle them."
Milo whispered to Kai: "Okay, now this guy I like. Sarcastic, techy… safe combo. My type."
Finally, a tall American woman, muscular and confident, leaned against a pile of crates. "Name's Riley. And I'm guessing you all are about to get us killed if you don't keep up."
Milo groaned. "America! Muscle and sarcasm. My second favorite combo after me."
Kai exhaled. "Alright. Signal brought us a team… now we survive it together."
The team moved cautiously through the industrial district. Taye led them through narrow alleys. Astrid calculated precise paths to avoid drones. Hiro scanned energy patterns. Riley covered the rear, tossing playful but pointed sarcasm at Milo.
Milo muttered, "I'm sensing a pattern here: everyone's sarcastic except me… oh wait, I am sarcastic too. I fit right in!"
Lira smiled slightly. "Focus. We need to synchronize with the signal. And… trust each other. Differences aside, we're now connected."
Kai nodded. "Then let's move. And remember—humor may keep us sane, but it won't keep us alive."
The Quantum Bridge pulsed faintly above the city. Its energy whispered across the alleys. The future was calling… and now, the team was bigger, diverse, and ready for the next stage of the mission.
