Chapter 1 - Death of a Nobody, Birth of a Lord

Ethan Vale died exactly as he had lived: completely unnoticed.

There was no heroic sacrifice. No speeding truck to push a child away from. There was only the harsh, flickering fluorescent light of a corporate cubicle at 3:14 AM, the hum of a dying server tower, and the crushing, suffocating weight in his chest.

At twenty-eight years old, Ethan was a ghost in his own life. He worked eighty-hour weeks analyzing data for a company whose name he barely cared to remember. He had no family left, no friends who called outside of holidays, and certainly no romantic prospects. His existence was a flatline on the monitor of life.

When the massive coronary struck, it felt less like a tragedy and more like a final, brutal eviction notice.

He slumped forward, his forehead hitting the ergonomic keyboard with a dull clack. His coffee mug tipped over, spilling lukewarm brown liquid across a stack of quarterly reports. As his vision tunneled and the edges of the world turned black, Ethan's final thought wasn't of regret or fear.

It was simply: Finally. I can rest.

Then, the darkness swallowed him whole.

"Soul compatibility: 99.8%."

"Vessel acquired. Commencing integration."

"Warning: Host vessel has sustained critical damage. Initiating emergency cellular reconstruction."

Ethan didn't open his eyes so much as he was violently dragged back into consciousness by a sensation of burning fire in his gut. He gasped, his back arching as he sucked in a lungful of air.

It didn't smell like stale office coffee and ozone anymore. It smelled like rain, rotting garbage, and the sharp, metallic tang of fresh blood.

My blood, he realized with a jolt.

He forced his eyes open. Raindrops the size of marbles pelted his face, washing away the grime of a narrow, cobblestone alleyway. High above, instead of a smog-choked city skyline, three shattered moons hung in a sky the color of bruised purple.

"Where..." Ethan croaked, his voice sounding entirely wrong. It was younger, smoother, yet raspy with pain.

He clutched his stomach. His fingers met torn silk and a slick, wet warmth. But beneath the blood, the flesh was knitting itself together at a terrifying speed. The agonizing burning sensation was actually his body healing a fatal stab wound in real-time.

Before panic could fully set in, a flood of foreign memories slammed into his brain like a freight train.

Aethelgard. The Human Kingdoms.

Magic. Monsters. Nobles.

Ethan Vale. The bastard son of the Vale Barony. Disgraced. Exiled. Hunted.

He gripped his head as the dual lives merged. He was still Ethan, the exhausted data analyst from Earth, but he was also this Ethan—a nineteen-year-old outcast who had just been cornered in the slums of the capital and run through with a poisoned dagger by an unknown assassin.

"I died," Ethan muttered, pushing himself up against the cold, damp brick wall of the alley. "I actually died. And I woke up in a fantasy world... only to get murdered immediately."

He let out a breathless, cynical laugh. "Typical."

Suddenly, a soft chime echoed in his mind, clear as a silver bell.

A translucent, glowing blue screen materialized in the air right in front of his face, hovering gently in the rain.

[System Initialization Complete.]

[Welcome, Host, to the Harem Ascension System.]

Ethan blinked, wiping rainwater and blood from his eyes. "The... what system?"

A voice spoke in his mind. It wasn't a robotic, synthesized tone, but a melodic, feminine voice that sounded both ancient and intimately close.

"Greetings, Master. I am Aria, the avatar of the Harem Ascension System. It is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance."

"Aria?" Ethan whispered, looking around the empty alley. "Are you... in my head?"

"I am bound to your soul, Master. You have been chosen for rebirth in the realm of Aethelgard. Your previous life was devoid of connection, power, and purpose. The System has been granted to you to ensure your new life is the exact opposite."

The blue screen flickered, changing its text.

[Host Status]

"Through the Harem Ascension System, your path to supreme power is not forged through endless, solitary meditation or mindless slaughter," Aria explained, her tone carrying a hint of pride. "Your strength is directly tied to the bonds you form with extraordinary women. As you cultivate Interest, Trust, Affection, Devotion, and ultimately, Soulmate status with powerful heroines, you will absorb a fraction of their strength, unlock unique skills, and ascend the power rankings of this world."

Ethan stared at the screen. He had read a few web novels back on Earth during his rare lunch breaks, but experiencing it was entirely different.

"Let me get this straight," Ethan said, his pragmatic mind kicking into gear despite the absurdity of the situation. "I don't get stronger by swinging a sword a thousand times. I get stronger by... building a harem?"

"Precisely, Master. The deeper the emotional and physical bond, the greater your power. Furthermore, the women bound to you will receive exponential growth bonuses, making your collective strength unrivaled."

Ethan looked down at his blood-stained hands. In his past life, he had been invisible. Women hadn't looked twice at the exhausted, pale guy in the corner cubicle. Now, a literal magical interface was telling him his destiny was to charm the most powerful women in a world of magic and monsters.

It was ridiculous. It was insane.

And for the first time in a decade, Ethan felt a spark of genuine excitement ignite in his chest.

"Alright," Ethan said, slowly pushing himself to his feet. His legs were shaky, but the fatal wound on his stomach had completely closed, leaving only a smooth scar. "I was a nobody. Now I'm a noble in a world of magic with a cheat system. I can work with this."

"I am glad you are adapting quickly, Master," Aria said. Her voice suddenly dropped an octave, taking on a tone of urgent warning. "Because you are currently in extreme danger."

[Emergency Quest Triggered!]

Quest: Survive the Night.

Objective: The Shadow Guild assassin who killed your vessel's previous occupant has realized you are not dead. Defeat or evade the assassin.

Reward: [Starter Pack], 100 System Points.

Failure: Permanent Death.

The hair on the back of Ethan's neck stood up.

A soft thud echoed from the mouth of the alleyway.

Ethan slowly turned his head. Standing at the entrance of the alley, silhouetted by the dim light of a streetlamp, was a figure draped in a dark, rain-slicked cloak. In their right hand, a curved dagger dripped with a sickly green poison—the exact same poison that had been in Ethan's gut just minutes ago.

"Impossible," a raspy, muffled voice hissed from beneath the assassin's hood. "I pierced your core. You should be rotting."

Ethan took a step back, his mind racing. He had no weapons. He had no combat experience. His 'Strength' stat was literally labeled 'Pathetic' by his own System.

"Aria," Ethan muttered under his breath, his eyes locked on the approaching killer. "Does this system come with any immediate combat skills?"

"Negative, Master. You currently have zero active bonds. You possess no combat skills."

The assassin raised their dagger, stepping into the alley. The killing intent rolling off them was so thick it made it hard for Ethan to breathe.

"Well," Ethan said, his heart pounding against his ribs as the shadow lunged forward. "This is going to be a very short second life."
