Chapter 2 - Shadowbound – Chapter 2: The Awakening Shadow

Chapter 2: The Awakening Shadow

The dungeon was silent.

Too silent.

Arin Vale stood in the middle of the broken chamber, his chest rising and falling rapidly. Fragments of shattered stone statues lay scattered across the floor. The air smelled of dust and something darker… something ancient.

In front of him floated the glowing blue interface.

[Eclipse System Active]

Arin stared at it, still struggling to understand what had just happened. Just minutes ago, he had been the weakest hunter in Grayhaven City. An F-Rank nobody. A burden to every team he joined.

But now…

Something inside him had changed.

A faint movement caught his attention.

Behind him, the shadow soldier he had summoned still stood silently. Its body looked like living darkness, its form humanoid but constantly shifting like smoke.

It didn't breathe.

It didn't move unless he willed it.

Yet Arin could feel it.

Not with his eyes, but somewhere deeper. Like a connection between their minds.

"Move forward," Arin whispered cautiously.

The shadow soldier obeyed instantly, stepping forward with silent precision.

Arin's heart pounded.

"It listens…"

Another notification appeared before his eyes.

[Shadow Soldier – Level 1]Type: Lesser ShadowLoyalty: Absolute

"Absolute loyalty?" Arin murmured.

For someone who had spent his entire life being mocked and ignored by other hunters, the idea felt strange.

For the first time… something obeyed him completely.

Suddenly—

CRACK

The sound echoed through the chamber.

Arin froze.

More statues were moving.

Across the room, several large stone warriors slowly turned their heads toward him. Their glowing red eyes flickered to life.

The dungeon hadn't finished its trial yet.

"Great…" Arin muttered under his breath.

The statues stepped down from their pedestals, their heavy footsteps shaking the ground.

There were five of them.

Each one was twice Arin's size, their stone blades sharp and ancient.

Before the Eclipse System, Arin would have died instantly.

But now…

He raised his hand.

"Attack."

His shadow soldier lunged forward like a dark arrow.

The first statue swung its sword down violently.

BOOM

The impact shattered part of the ground, but the shadow soldier slipped through the attack like smoke and struck the statue's chest.

Cracks spread across the stone armor.

Arin felt it.

A strange sensation.

Every movement of the shadow soldier… every strike… it was like controlling a second body.

"Faster!" Arin shouted instinctively.

The shadow soldier obeyed.

It leaped onto the statue's shoulder and drove its dark blade into the statue's head.

CRASH

The statue collapsed into pieces.

A notification appeared.

[Enemy Defeated][Experience Gained]

Another message followed immediately.

[Level Up]

Arin's eyes widened.

"I… leveled up?"

Warm energy surged through his body. His muscles felt stronger, his breathing steadier.

But the other statues were already charging.

Two rushed toward him while the others surrounded the shadow soldier.

"Damn it…"

Arin grabbed a broken spear from the ground. He wasn't strong, but he refused to stand still.

The first statue swung its blade.

Arin barely rolled away.

The sword smashed into the ground where he had been standing seconds earlier.

Dust filled the air.

The second statue lunged toward him.

Arin raised the spear and thrust it forward with everything he had.

The spear snapped instantly.

But the moment of distraction was enough.

His shadow soldier appeared behind the statue.

SLASH

Dark energy cut through the statue's neck.

Another enemy fell.

But then—

BOOM

One of the remaining statues grabbed the shadow soldier and smashed it into the wall.

The shadow form flickered.

Arin felt the impact like a punch to his chest.

"So we share damage…" he whispered.

The statue lifted its sword for a finishing strike.

Arin's heart raced.

Think.

Think!

The Eclipse System flashed again.

[Skill Unlocked]Shadow Step – Level 1

Before Arin could question it, instinct took over.

The world blurred.

In the next instant, he appeared behind the statue.

"W-What…?"

He had moved.

No—

He had teleported through the shadows.

Arin didn't waste the chance.

He grabbed the statue's sword and drove it into the crack his shadow soldier had created earlier.

The blade sank deep.

CRACK

The statue exploded into fragments.

Only two remained.

The battle became chaos.

Shadows and stone collided across the chamber. Arin dodged desperately while his shadow soldier fought like a relentless phantom.

Finally—

The last statue fell.

Silence returned to the dungeon.

Arin dropped to his knees, breathing heavily.

The system appeared again.

[Trial Completed]

Then another message appeared.

One that made Arin's blood run cold.

[Hidden Reward Unlocked]

From the center of the chamber, the ground began to tremble.

A massive stone throne slowly rose from beneath the floor.

Ancient symbols glowed across its surface.

Dark energy poured into the room.

Arin stood slowly.

"What… is this place?"

Then the system spoke again.

[You have been chosen.]

A deep voice echoed from the shadows surrounding the throne.

Not from the system.

Not from the dungeon.

But from something far older.

Far more powerful.

And far more dangerous.

Arin felt the entire dungeon tremble.

And for the first time since gaining the Eclipse System…

He realized something terrifying.

He might not be the only one watching.

Something else had awakened.

Something ancient.

And it had been waiting… for him.
