Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The City that Never Sleeps

The city was louder than Lina imagined.

When the bus finally rolled into the terminal, the sun had already begun to set behind the tall buildings. Orange light reflected off endless windows, making the skyline glow like something from another world.

Lina stepped down from the bus, gripping her small suitcase tightly.

Cars rushed past in every direction. People walked quickly along the sidewalks, talking loudly, laughing, arguing, shouting into phones.

No one looked at her.

No one noticed the girl standing there with wide eyes and a suitcase that held everything she owned.

Back in the village, everyone knew everyone.

Here…

She was invisible.

Lina slowly turned in a circle, taking in the towering buildings, bright neon lights, and crowds of strangers moving like restless waves through the streets.

So this is the city.

It felt exciting.

And terrifying.

She took a deep breath and began walking.

Her mother's money pouch rested safely in her pocket. It wasn't much, but she believed it would be enough until she found a job.

At least… that's what she told herself.

An hour later, Lina had already learned her first lesson about the city.

Finding work wasn't easy.

The first restaurant she entered barely looked at her.

"We're not hiring."

The second place asked if she had experience.

She didn't.

The third place asked for identification and references.

She had neither.

By the time darkness fell, Lina had walked through at least ten streets and visited more shops than she could count.

Every answer was the same.

No.

No vacancies.

Try somewhere else.

Lina's feet were starting to ache when she finally stopped in front of a small convenience store. The bright fluorescent lights inside buzzed softly.

She walked in.

A middle-aged man stood behind the counter.

"Excuse me," Lina said politely. "Are you hiring?"

The man looked her up and down.

"No."

"Even part-time?"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

Lina nodded politely and left the store.

Outside, the sky had turned completely dark.

But the city was only getting brighter.

Lights from buildings, signs, restaurants, and billboards lit up every street.

Music spilled out from bars and clubs.

People dressed in elegant clothes laughed loudly as they entered expensive restaurants.

Women walked past wearing high heels and beautiful dresses that probably cost more than everything Lina owned.

The city never seemed to slow down.

It only grew louder.

Faster.

More alive.

Lina walked until her legs felt heavy.

Finally, she sat down on a bench near a busy street corner.

Her stomach growled softly.

She hadn't eaten since early morning.

Carefully, she opened the pouch her mother gave her.

Inside were several folded bills.

Not many.

Maybe enough for a few days if she was careful.

Lina closed the pouch again.

I need a job tomorrow.

She looked up at the passing crowds.

Everyone seemed to have somewhere to go.

Everyone except her.

Across the street, a group of women stood outside a brightly lit nightclub. Their dresses sparkled under the neon lights.

Men walked up to them, talking and laughing.

Some of the women leaned closer to the men, whispering something that made them smile.

Lina watched curiously.

One of the women suddenly noticed her staring.

She walked across the street confidently, her heels clicking sharply against the pavement.

Up close, the woman looked older than Lina, maybe in her mid-twenties. Her makeup was bold, her dress tight and elegant.

"You look lost," the woman said.

Lina stood up quickly.

"I'm just resting."

"You're not from here."

It wasn't a question.

"No," Lina admitted.

"New in the city?"

"Yes."

The woman studied her carefully.

"You looking for work?"

Lina nodded.

"I've tried many places today."

"And?"

"No one is hiring."

The woman didn't seem surprised.

"That happens."

She crossed her arms and tilted her head slightly.

"You're pretty."

The comment caught Lina off guard.

"Thank you."

"You could make good money in this city."

Lina's curiosity sparked.

"What kind of work?"

The woman smiled slowly.

"The kind men pay very well for."

Lina didn't fully understand what she meant.

But something about the woman's confident smile made her uneasy.

"What do you do?" Lina asked.

The woman glanced back at the nightclub behind her.

"Let's just say… I keep lonely men company."

The meaning became clearer.

Lina felt a sudden tension in her chest.

"Oh."

The woman noticed the reaction and laughed softly.

"Relax. I'm not forcing you."

She pulled a small card from her purse and handed it to Lina.

"If you ever get tired of hearing 'no' from job interviews…"

She tapped the card.

"Come here."

Lina looked down at it.

It was the address of a nightclub.

"What happens there?" Lina asked quietly.

The woman's smile turned mysterious.

"Opportunity."

With that, she turned and walked back across the street, disappearing into the glowing entrance of the club.

Lina stood there for a long moment, staring at the card in her hand.

The music from the nightclub pulsed through the night air.

The city lights shimmered around her.

The city never slept.

And somewhere inside those bright buildings…

People were making money.

Lots of it.

Lina slowly slipped the card into her pocket.

She wasn't sure why she kept it.

Maybe curiosity.

Maybe desperation.

Or maybe…

A small voice inside her was beginning to understand something.

In this city, survival sometimes meant doing things you never imagined before.

Lina looked up at the endless lights of the skyline.

The city sparkled like a promise.

Or a warning.

She still didn't know which one it would be.

But tomorrow…

She would find out.
