Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: A Dangerous Guess

Morning arrived quietly in the small apartment.

Rain from the previous night had left the air cool and fresh. Sunlight slowly crept through the curtains, lighting the tiny living room.

Xu Mengmeng was sitting on the couch with her laptop open.

Her expression was calm, but her eyes were sharp as she scrolled through a business article.

A headline caught her attention.

"Gu Corporation Expands Its Market — Young Heir Leads the Company to Another Success."

Mengmeng leaned back slightly.

The article mentioned the mysterious heir of the Gu family. A man who rarely appeared publicly but had already taken control of many business deals.

She stared at the screen for a moment.

Then slowly turned her head.

Feng was standing in the kitchen making coffee.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Gu family heir…

Gu Feng.

The thought appeared in her mind suddenly.

But that was impossible.

Right?

The man in her apartment was wearing simple clothes and living in a tiny rented place.

He didn't act like someone who controlled a massive company.

Still… something about him didn't feel ordinary.

His posture.

His calm confidence.

The way he spoke during their first meeting.

Mengmeng closed the laptop slowly.

Then she stood up and walked toward the kitchen.

Feng noticed her approaching.

"You're staring," he said casually.

Mengmeng leaned against the counter.

"Can I ask you something?"

Feng handed her a cup of coffee.

"Depends on the question."

Mengmeng looked at him carefully.

"Do you know the Gu family?"

For the first time that morning, Feng paused.

Only for a second.

But Mengmeng noticed it.

Feng quickly took a sip of his coffee.

"They're famous," he said calmly. "Everyone knows them."

Mengmeng tilted her head slightly.

"That's not what I asked."

Their eyes met.

The atmosphere in the kitchen became strangely quiet.

Feng suddenly laughed lightly.

"You think I'm related to them?"

Mengmeng didn't answer.

She was still studying him.

Feng shrugged.

"If I was the heir of the Gu family," he said, "do you think I'd be living in this apartment?"

He gestured around the small kitchen.

Mengmeng looked around.

The tiny fridge.

The old cabinets.

The cheap furniture.

It didn't match someone from one of the richest families in the country.

She crossed her arms.

"…Fair point."

Feng hid his relief well.

For a moment, she had been dangerously close to the truth.

But now her suspicion seemed to fade.

Mengmeng sighed and walked back to the couch.

"Forget it."

Feng watched her carefully.

She had sharp instincts.

Too sharp.

He would need to be more careful from now on.

Later that afternoon, the atmosphere in the apartment became more relaxed.

Mengmeng was sitting on the floor organizing some documents while Feng was fixing a small lamp near the window.

The apartment was quiet except for the soft sound of tools clicking.

After a while, Feng suddenly spoke.

"You work a lot."

Mengmeng didn't look up.

"I'm a CEO. It comes with the job."

Feng smirked slightly.

"You don't act like one."

Mengmeng looked up.

"What does that mean?"

"You cook, clean, and worry about grocery prices," Feng said. "Most CEOs I know wouldn't survive one day like this."

Mengmeng smiled faintly.

"Maybe I'm different."

Feng didn't reply.

But he thought to himself—

You definitely are.

Evening came quickly.

Mengmeng stood in the kitchen again, preparing dinner.

This time Feng joined her.

"Move," he said, gently pushing her aside.

"I'll cut the vegetables."

Mengmeng raised an eyebrow.

"You can cook?"

"I can survive."

She laughed softly.

For a few minutes they worked together in the small kitchen.

Their shoulders occasionally bumped as they moved around.

At one point Feng reached for a knife at the same time Mengmeng did.

Their hands touched.

Both of them froze for a second.

Mengmeng quickly pulled her hand back.

"Sorry."

Feng chuckled.

"You apologize a lot for someone who looks so confident."

Mengmeng pretended to ignore him and continued cooking.

But her ears had turned slightly red.

After dinner, they sat on the couch watching a random movie.

Neither of them was paying much attention to it.

Halfway through the movie, Mengmeng slowly leaned to the side.

Her head lightly rested on Feng's shoulder.

She seemed half asleep.

Feng glanced down at her.

Her expression looked peaceful.

Completely different from the sharp woman he sometimes sensed behind her smile.

He didn't move.

For a moment, the apartment felt quiet and warm.

Almost like a real home.

But somewhere deep in both their minds…

The same thought remained.

They were hiding huge secrets from each other.

Secrets that could completely change everything.

For now, they were just a fake married couple sharing small romantic moments.

But if the truth ever came out…

Their peaceful little apartment might turn into a battlefield.
