[AN: No cliff. Complete and wholesome chapter. Though I don't know much about foreign marriage rules, I did a quick research before writing. Hope it was alright.]
By the time the music softened across the estate, every guest had taken their seat beneath the pale December sky.
The lake behind the ceremony platform reflected the sunlight, with two white swans drifting lazily across the water behind the flower-covered arch. Rows of white chairs faced the platform, filled with family and the small circle of friends Jack and Haley had chosen to share the day with them.
Jack stood beside the officiant with his hands loosely clasped in front of him, appearing considerably calmer than he actually felt. He'd been through premieres, interviews, award ceremonies, and enough public appearances that standing in front of a crowd shouldn't have bothered him anymore.
This felt completely different.
Luke stood beside him as best man, dressed in a black suit that Claire had threatened him several times not to stain before the photographs were finished. Jack had heard at least two of those warnings himself that morning.
Across from them, Alex waited as Haley's maid of honor. Every few minutes, her eyes drifted toward Luke with suspicion, as though she still wasn't convinced he actually had the wedding rings despite personally watching Jack hand them over earlier.
Luke eventually noticed her staring and patted his jacket pocket.
Alex narrowed her eyes further.
Jack caught the exchange and nearly laughed, which helped settle some of the nervous energy gathering in his chest.
Behind Luke stood Woody, Matthew, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller as the rest of Jack's groomsmen. Emma, Dakota, and Willa waited across from them on Haley's side, occasionally exchanging small smiles while the final guests settled into their seats.
Jack's attention moved briefly toward the front row.
Richard and Sarah sat together near the aisle. Richard met his eyes and gave him a small nod, the kind that carried far more meaning than anything he could've said from his seat. Sarah had already dabbed beneath one eye twice with a tissue despite spending most of the morning insisting that she wasn't going to cry during the ceremony.
Jack smiled faintly when she caught him looking.
She immediately pointed the tissue at him as though warning him against commenting.
Across the aisle sat the Dunphy and Pritchett side of the family. Claire was beside Phil's empty chair, while Gloria sat nearby with one hand resting comfortably over her growing stomach. Jay sat beside her with Manny, and Mitchell and Cam had taken the row behind them.
Cam was already crying.
Mitchell glanced sideways at him before leaning closer. "She hasn't even entered yet."
Cam carefully dabbed at the corner of one eye while keeping his attention toward the aisle. "I'm emotionally preheating, Mitchell."
Mitchell stared at him for a moment before deciding there was probably no productive response available.
Before he could attempt one anyway, the music changed.
The quiet conversations among the guests faded almost immediately, and Jack straightened as everyone turned toward the aisle.
Lily appeared first.
She carried a small white basket filled with flower petals and walked forward with the intense concentration of someone who had been given an extremely important assignment and intended to execute it flawlessly.
For approximately six steps, she succeeded.
Then Lily noticed the swans behind the ceremony platform.
Her pace slowed dramatically.
Cam leaned forward in his seat, already recognizing the danger. "Eyes forward, sweetheart."
Lily continued walking while staring openly toward the lake, scattering another handful of petals somewhere vaguely near the aisle. "I just want to pet them."
Mitchell covered part of his face with one hand.
A few guests laughed quietly as Lily finally remembered her responsibilities and continued toward the platform. When she reached the front, she looked into her basket and decided that distributing the remaining petals individually would take far too much effort, and dumped the entire collection into one impressive pile beside Alex's feet.
Alex looked down at the small mountain of petals.
Lily smiled proudly at her work before walking over to take her seat beside Cam.
Jack lowered his head for a moment, fighting a laugh.
Luke leaned slightly toward him. "Honestly, that went better than expected."
Considering Lily's usual standards, Jack couldn't disagree.
The bridal procession began a moment later.
Emma came first, walking down the aisle with an easy smile before taking her place beside Alex. Dakota followed behind her, then Willa, each reaching the front as the soft music carried across the lawn.
Jack smiled, though his attention kept drifting toward the far end of the aisle.
His heartbeat had started climbing again.
Then the music changed.
The change was subtle, yet everyone immediately understood what it meant.
The guests rose together.
Jack looked toward the aisle and forgot about everything else around him.
Haley appeared beside Phil.
For a few seconds, the estate seemed strangely quiet despite the music still playing.
Jack had seen Haley dressed beautifully many times. He watched her walk the red carpet at modeling events, attend movie premieres with flashing cameras, and come out of dressing rooms in outfits that made him forget what they were talking about.
He'd also seen her half asleep in sweatpants, barefoot in his kitchen while stealing food from his plate, wrapped in one of his shirts after waking up late, and standing in front of their refrigerator complaining that someone had finished the orange juice despite both of them knowing she'd been responsible.
Somehow, none of those memories prepared him for seeing her walking toward him in a wedding dress.
The dress followed the natural shape of her body before falling softly toward the ground, while the curve of her pregnancy was clearly visible beneath the fabric. One hand rested around Phil's arm, and her engagement ring caught the afternoon light whenever she moved.
Jack barely noticed anything beyond her face.
Haley looked nervous when she first walked in. Then she saw him. Her face changed quickly. The nervous smile turned into a warmer, more familiar one, and Jack felt his own expression change before he realized it.
Luke looked toward him from the corner of his eye. "You look like you're gonna cry."
Jack didn't take his eyes away from Haley. "I might actually cry."
Luke considered that before giving a small nod. "That's probably allowed at weddings."
Jack would've answered if he'd trusted his voice enough.
Instead, he watched Haley continue toward him.
Phil walked slowly beside his daughter, and for once there wasn't a joke waiting behind his smile. His eyes were already wet, though he was holding himself together considerably better than Jack would've expected.
Claire watched them approach from the front row with one hand pressed near her mouth.
When Haley and Phil finally reached the platform, the music softened again.
Haley turned toward her father and squeezed his arm.
Phil looked at her for a moment, and whatever strength he'd been using to keep himself composed seemed to weaken slightly.
"You know you never stop being my little girl, right?"
Haley's eyes immediately filled with tears, and she gave him an accusing look despite the smile trembling at the corners of her mouth. "Dad, you can't say stuff like that before the pictures."
Phil smiled and leaned forward to kiss her forehead. "I love you, sweetheart."
Haley wrapped her arms around him. "I love you too, Dad."
They stayed that way for another second before Haley finally released him.
Phil took a slow breath and turned toward Jack.
Jack expected some kind of joke.
Under normal circumstances, Phil probably would've had three prepared already. Instead, he simply held out his hand.
Jack took it.
Phil's grip tightened around his as he met Jack's eyes. "Take care of my girl."
There was no hesitation in Jack's answer. "Always."
Phil studied him quietly.
Jack had no idea what he was looking for, though after several seconds, something in Phil's expression relaxed. He gave a small nod and released Jack's hand before turning toward his seat.
Jack watched him take one step.
"Mr. Dunphy."
Phil stopped and looked back.
Jack stepped forward and pulled him into a hug.
Phil froze for barely half a second before both arms came around him.
Jack lowered his voice so the words wouldn't travel beyond the two of them. "Thank you for trusting me. I'll always take care of her and make her happy."
Phil's arms tightened around his back.
When they separated, Phil's eyes were considerably wetter than they'd been moments earlier. He cleared his throat and pointed lightly toward Jack while attempting to recover whatever remained of his dignity.
"You're paying for any makeup damage this causes."
Jack smiled as the tension finally eased from his chest. "I'll cover the entire bill."
Phil laughed quietly and gave his shoulder one final squeeze before walking toward the front row.
Claire reached for his hand the moment he sat beside her.
Phil took it without looking away from his daughter.
Jack turned back toward Haley.
She was already watching him. Her eyes were wet, her smile was unsteady.
Jack stepped closer and held out his hand.
Haley slipped hers into his.
The noise of the guests, the lake behind them, the swans Lily still desperately wanted to pet, and even the nervous pressure he'd carried all morning seemed to fall somewhere outside Jack's awareness.
Haley gave his fingers a small squeeze.
Jack squeezed back.
The officiant waited until Phil had settled beside Claire and the guests had taken their seats again before smiling at the couple standing beneath the flowers.
The ceremony finally began.
The officiant looked between Jack and Haley before turning his attention toward the gathered families and friends.
"We're here today because two people have chosen to make a promise to each other. Marriage asks for love, patience, trust, forgiveness, and the willingness to keep choosing one another through every version of the life that follows. Jack and Haley have already experienced more change together than either of them expected this year, and today they stand here ready to meet everything still ahead of them as husband and wife."
Haley squeezed Jack's hand again, and his thumb moved gently across her fingers.
The officiant continued with a softer smile. "Jack and Haley have chosen to write their own vows, so I'll let them speak for themselves."
Jack drew a slow breath as he looked at Haley.
The words he'd prepared suddenly felt inadequate compared with the woman standing in front of him.
He kept both of her hands in his.
"Haley, when we first got together, I thought I understood what loving someone meant. I knew I wanted to be with you. You made me happier than anybody else could, and whenever something happened, good or bad, you were the first person I wanted to tell."
Haley's smile trembled as she remembered the first time she approached Jack during her school days and everything that followed afterward.
Jack continued. "Then we grew up together. We fought over mostly food."
She nearly laughed, remembering her fight with Jack over the last spoon of ice cream.
"We made mistakes, we scared each other, and somehow we kept finding our way back to the same place. Every year, I learned something new about you, and every year, I somehow loved you more than I thought I could."
He glanced briefly toward the curve beneath her wedding dress before meeting her eyes again.
"This year changed everything faster than either of us planned. We bought a house, found out we were going to be parents, found out we were going to be parents twice over, and somehow ended up standing here months ahead of the schedule we thought we had."
A quiet wave of emotion moved through the guests, though nobody interrupted.
Jack tightened his fingers around hers. "The schedule changed, Haley. You never did. You were always the person I wanted at the end of it."
Haley blinked quickly as another tear slipped down her cheek.
"I promise I'll be there when things are easy, and I'll be there when they're impossible. I'll support your dreams as fiercely as you've supported mine. I'll be beside you through every sleepless night, every diaper, every doctor appointment, every argument, every success, and every disaster we don't see coming."
His voice softened further.
"I promise our children will grow up knowing how much their mother is loved. I promise you'll never have to wonder whether you're facing any of this alone. Most of all, I promise that whatever changes around us, wherever life takes us, I'll keep choosing you."
Haley's tears were falling freely now, and Jack smiled through his own emotion.
"I love you, Haley. I've loved you for years, and I'll spend the rest of my life proving that marrying you was the best decision I ever made."
Haley laughed softly through her tears as she looked down for a moment, gathering herself before she raised her eyes toward him again.
"I had vows written," she began, her voice slightly shaky. "And they were actually really good because Alex helped me fix the grammar."
A few smiles appeared among the guests, though the quiet reverence of the ceremony remained.
Haley took a breath and continued. "But standing here looking at you, I don't really care if I say everything perfectly. You already know I'm terrible at speeches."
Jack's smile widened while Haley held his hands more tightly.
"When I met you, I didn't know where my life was going. For a long time, I honestly didn't think very far ahead. I cared about what was happening that day, what I was wearing that weekend, where the next party was, and whether Mom was going to notice when I came home late."
Claire lowered her gaze with a tearful smile as Haley continued.
"Then you became part of what came next. Suddenly, when I pictured next month or next year, you were there. When I imagined traveling, having a career, getting married someday, you were there too."
Haley glanced toward her stomach and smiled.
"I didn't picture all of this happening at nineteen. I definitely didn't picture two babies showing up at once, because apparently our children inherited your inability to do anything normally."
Jack's eyes softened as Haley looked back toward him.
"But when I was scared, you stayed. When I panicked, you held my hand. When I told you everything was happening too fast, you never made me feel like I had to catch up alone."
Her voice broke slightly, and she paused until she could continue.
"You make me feel safe without making me feel small. You believe in me even when I don't believe in myself. You make me laugh when I'm angry, which is incredibly annoying, and somehow you've always made me feel like whatever happens next is something we can figure out together."
Haley squeezed his hands once more.
"So I promise I'll keep figuring it out with you. I'll support you when you're chasing some insane dream, and I'll remind you to sleep when you forget that normal humans need it. I'll build a home with you, raise our babies with you, fight with you when you steal my ice cream, forgive you when you kiss me, and love you through every version of the life we're about to have."
Her smile became warmer.
"You've been my boyfriend, my best friend, my fiancé, and the person I've trusted with more of myself than anybody else. Today, I get to call you my husband, and I've never been more sure about anything."
Jack lowered his head briefly as emotion finally overwhelmed whatever composure he'd managed to keep.
The officiant allowed them several quiet seconds before turning toward Luke. "May we have the rings?"
Luke did a quick sleight-of-hand magic trick and placed them into the officiant's waiting hand before stepping back into position.
The officiant handed Haley's wedding band to Jack. Jack took it carefully and held Haley's left hand while the diamond engagement ring shimmered above her knuckle.
"Jack, as you place this ring on Haley's finger, do you take her as your wife, promising to love her, honor her, support her, and share your life with her?"
Jack slid the wedding band gently into place beside her engagement ring. "I do, with everything that I am."
The officiant handed Jack's ring to Haley, who took it with slightly trembling fingers.
"Haley, as you place this ring on Jack's finger, do you take him as your husband, promising to love him, honor him, support him, and share your life with him?"
Haley slipped the ring onto Jack's finger and held his hand after it settled into place. "I do, with all my heart."
The officiant smiled at them before looking toward the assembled families.
"Then by the promises you've made here today, witnessed by the people who love you most, it is my privilege to pronounce you husband and wife."
Jack and Haley stared at one another as the words settled over them.
Husband and wife.
Haley's smile broke through her tears as Jack stepped closer, one hand settling carefully against her waist while the other touched her cheek.
The officiant smiled warmly. "Jack, you may kiss your wife."
Jack leaned forward as Haley wrapped her arms around his neck, and beneath the flower-covered arch beside the quiet lake, Jack kissed his wife.
The swans formed a heart shape with their necks, sensing the love around them as a group of white doves flew in the sky.
