The combined force ventured deeper into Frost-haven at dawn, stepping into the treacherous trails of the Shadowed Vale. The narrow mountain path twisted between jagged rocks and dark, twisted pines. An unnatural violet mist clung to the ground like living smoke, and the air grew heavier with every step. Faint whispers seemed to echo from the shadows, as if the forest itself was watching them and waiting.
Liam rode at the front, his golden armour catching the weak morning light. Beside him rode Clara, crimson blade already drawn. Behind them marched the royal soldiers and mages. Captain Harlan and his crew followed closely, weapons ready. Dave stayed near Harlan, his small frame moving, knife gripped firmly in his hand.
"Stay alert," Harlan warned his men, voice low. "This place feels strange… and eerily silent."
The ambush came without warning.
A deafening, guttural roar shattered the silence. From the rocks and violet mist burst a massive horde of cursed monsters, hulking bone-spiked behemoths with jagged spikes protruding from their backs, flickering shadow wolves that phased in and out of visibility, and writhing thorny vine abominations whose tentacles dripped with poisonous sap.
"It's an ambush!" Liam bellowed, leaping from his horse. "Clara, with me!"
Chaos exploded instantly. The two groups had never fought side by side before, and the lack of coordination was devastating. The heroes party charged forward aggressively, while Harlan's crew instinctively tried to form a tight defensive circle around Dave. Soldiers hesitated between the two commands, creating fatal gaps. This confusion caused them to lose ground almost immediately and brutally.
A bone-spiked behemoth smashed through the disorganised front line like a living battering ram. Its jagged spikes tore into two royal soldiers, sending them flying backwards with agonised screams as blood sprayed across the snow. Shadow wolves phased through the gaps, appearing behind the lines and clamping their smoky jaws on a mage's shoulder, dragging her screaming into the mist. Thorny vines whipped out from all directions like living whips, wrapping around legs and arms, yanking men off their feet while spraying thick, poisonous mist that burned skin and made eyes water.
"Stay together, damn it!" Harlan roared, cutting through a vine that tried to wrap around his leg. But his voice was lost in the roar of battle as Liam punched forward alone.
Clara spun her blade in elegant arcs. "Radiant Crescent!" she shouted. Her crimson sword glowed with brilliant crimson light as she swung in a wide horizontal sweep. The crescent wave of crimson energy sliced through two shadow wolves, their forms dissolving with high-pitched shrieks. But without support, new monsters immediately flooded the gap she had created.
Liam planted his feet and roared, "Heavenly Impact!" His fist connected with a bone-spiked behemoth's chest. The explosive force shattered bone plates and hurled the creature backwards before raising his own sword, but the power of his solo charge left the flanks completely exposed. Shira raised her staff desperately. "Arcane Veil!" A shimmering dome of light expanded, but it flickered and weakened because the soldiers were too scattered to stay under its protection.
Collen began cycling through elements rapidly. "Tidal Surge!" A roaring wall of water erupted, sweeping away several shadow wolves. "Frostbind Chains!" Sharp ice spikes shot upward, freezing two thorny abominations solid. "Thunder Lance!" Lightning cracked down from the sky, exploding a behemoth into charred pieces. But without coordinated timing, many of his spells hit already-dead creatures or missed entirely as the monsters kept pouring in.
Harlan and his crew fought with gritty, adaptive sailor tactics, short, brutal chops with cutlasses, weighted nets thrown to tangle shadow wolves, and heavy boarding axes swung in wide, powerful arcs to cleave through vines. Dalen spun with a pair of short swords, slashing low to hamstring charging beasts. But they were constantly forced to break formation to cover the heroes' reckless advances.
Dave refused to hide. He darted between the adults, using his small size to his advantage. When a thorny vine lashed toward Harlan's back, Dave slashed at it with his knife, severing the tendril cleanly. "I've got your back!" he shouted, voice steady and fierce. A shadow wolf phased behind him. Dave spun and drove his knife into the creature's smoky flank, making it flicker and dissipate. He kept fighting without hesitation, staying close to Harlan and using quick, precise stabs whenever a gap appeared.
For the first long, brutal minutes, they were losing badly. The group was pushed back step by step into a narrow ravine, their backs pressed against cold, sharp rock. Soldiers screamed as shadow wolves dragged them into the violet mist. A thorny vine nearly pulled Dave away until Harlan hacked it apart with desperate swings. Liam staggered as a behemoth's spike grazed his armour, cracking it with a loud snap. Clara's radiant slashes grew shorter and more desperate. Shira's barriers kept collapsing under the relentless assault. Collen's elemental spells lit up the battlefield in bright flashes, but the monsters healed faster than they could be killed, their wounds closing almost as soon as they opened thanks to the cursed energy in the air.
"We're getting surrounded!" Harlan yelled, breathing hard, blood dripping from a cut on his cheek. "Heroes, fall back and link with us! We can't fight like this!"
The turning point came slowly, after many more minutes of exhausting combat, as the two groups finally began adapting to each other through sheer necessity and survival instinct.
Liam noticed the crew's tight defensive style and started pulling his punches to cover their flanks instead of charging alone. Clara adjusted her Radiant Crescent swings to create wider protective arcs that shielded both parties. Shira strengthened Arcane Veil to encompass the entire combined formation, while Collen began timing his spells with the crew's movements — launching Thunder Lance right after Harlan's crew tangled wolves with nets, or following Inferno Bloom with Dalen's low slashes to finish burning creatures.
Harlan's crew shifted from pure defence to supporting the heroes' heavy hits, using nets and axes to immobilise targets for Liam's powerful Heavenly Impact. Dave stayed low and used quick knife stabs to cut tendons or distract monsters, creating small openings for the adults.
The coordination improved gradually. Liam's fist shattered a behemoth's chest while Clara's Radiant Judgment sent a pillar of holy light crashing down on a cluster of shadow wolves. Collen's Stonefist Barrage rose from the ground to crush frozen abominations created by his own Frost-bind Chains. Shira's Arcane Nova burst outward, pushing back the nearest wave and giving everyone a precious few seconds to breathe and regroup.
For a short, hard-won moment after the long struggle, the tide seemed to shift. The group cut down several more beasts and gained a small breathing space. Dave stood his ground beside Harlan with renewed fire in his eyes.
But it was only temporary.
A deeper, more menacing roar echoed from the violet mist. A new, larger wave of monsters emerged, bigger, darker, and far more vicious than before, their bodies pulsing with even stronger cursed energy.
The real struggle was far from over.
Deep within the hidden mountain stronghold, Lord Dox stood alone in the dimly lit chamber with Lucius. The fifth hero was still chained to the cold stone wall, his body trembling from pain and exhaustion. His wounds had not healed, and every breath came with visible difficulty.
Dox looked down at him with cold satisfaction. "You see, Lucius? Even now, your so-called allies are fighting for their lives in my domain. They think they can rescue you. They think they can stop what is coming. But they are only delaying the inevitable."
Lucius lifted his head weakly, sweat dripping down his face. "They… will come for me."
Dox smiled thinly, his voice dripping with venom. "Let them come. Every drop of blood they shed only feeds the curse. When they finally reach this place, if they reach it, they will find nothing but ruin. You will watch them break, and then you will break with them. The shadow inside you will be mine, and this kingdom will finally pay for what it did to me."
He turned to leave, but paused at the doorway for one last cold glance. "Rest while you can, fifth hero. Your friends are about to learn how hopeless their journey truly is."
Dox stepped out of the chamber, the heavy door closing behind him with a loud thud. He walked alone down the dark corridor, his violet cloak trailing behind him.
Moments later, hurried footsteps echoed through the hall. Zon appeared, breathing heavily, his face tense and covered in sweat.
"My lord," Zon said, bowing low. "The intruders, the heroes party, the sailor crew, and the boy, they have entered the Shadowed Vale. They were ambushed by the cursed monsters as planned. At first, they were disorganised and losing ground badly… but they are starting to adapt to each other. They are pushing back slightly. What are your orders?"
Dox stopped walking. A slow, cruel smile spread across his face as he turned to face Zon.
Dox stopped walking. A slow, cruel smile spread across his face as he turned to face Zon.
"Excellent," he whispered, voice smooth and dripping with satisfaction. "Let them adapt. Let them fight. The more blood they spill, the stronger the curse becomes. When they finally break through… they will walk straight into the second trap I prepared for them."
He let out a low, chilling chuckle that echoed down the dark corridor.
"Tell the guardians to pull back slightly and lure them deeper. I want them exhausted, desperate, and overconfident when they reach the Black Spire. Then… we will see how well their little alliance holds when the true horror begins."
Zon bowed even lower. "As you command, my lord."
Dox's smile widened, eyes gleaming with pure malice.
"Good. Everything is proceeding exactly as I planned."
