Chapter 53 - Chapter 52: Field Battle, How to Play an Instant Kill?

"Go! Nidorino, use Horn Attack!"

"Dodge it, Bellsprout! Use Vine Whip to bind it!"

"Nice!"

"Wow!"

Yuuto, Delia, and the playing Pikachu and Eevee all turned their heads at the same time.

It turned out to be a roadside "Field Battle" spot that had formed spontaneously.

A dozen or so Trainers had gathered in a large circle. Inside, two people were commanding their Pokémon in a fierce exchange.

A Nidorino and a Bellsprout were trading blows back and forth, with cheers and exclamations erupting from the crowd from time to time.

Field Battles were a very common sight on a Trainer's journey.

Some Trainers, impatient to test their strength and accumulate practical experience, wouldn't wait to reach an official Gym or city battle facility. They would spontaneously organize in open spaces like this. The rules were casual, and winning or losing didn't matter — it was all about the thrill and passion of the battle.

"Hey, three more Trainers just arrived over there." Someone noticed Yuuto and the others.

A boy wearing a baseball cap who looked quite battle-hungry waved directly at them and shouted, "Hey! You guys! Want to battle? It's very exciting! It's okay even if you lose!"

"A duel?" Delia's eyes lit up slightly.

This was the first time she had actively felt the urge to battle.

Previously on the journey, she had mostly focused on companionship and caretaking, and Eevee had been more of a partner than a combatant.

But today, Eevee had just reached Level 20. The little fellow was circling her feet, full of energy, with a look of eager anticipation in its eyes.

This gave Delia a small spark of confidence and desire about being a "Trainer."

"I want to try!" Delia said softly, her voice filled with expectation and a hint of nervousness.

"Sure, Delia! Let's go!" Misty immediately agreed. She also wanted to use a real battle to distract herself from the "little thing" she was wearing. "Yuuto, do you want to join us?"

Yuuto nodded. "Of course."

In Field Battles, the opponents' Pokémon were generally stronger than wild ones of the same level, with better battle awareness and coordination. It was a great place to accumulate combat experience and skills, plus he could earn experience points — no reason to miss out.

Quite a few people were participating in the Field Battles, and the atmosphere was lively.

The three of them were quickly assigned opponents.

Yuuto's opponent was that same baseball-capped boy who had greeted them.

"Haha, I'll go first! My partner is very strong!" The boy high-spiritedly threw a Poké Ball. "Go, Rattata!"

A flash of white light appeared, and a Rattata slightly larger than average with exceptionally sharp front teeth appeared in the field. It had a fierce look and kept crying out "Rattata, Rattata," showing good momentum.

"A Rattata, huh?" Yuuto glanced at his shoulder.

"Pika!"

Pikachu understood, leaping gracefully into the field as electric sparks crackled on its cheeks.

"Eh? A Pikachu? An electric mouse?" The boy in the cap was stunned for a moment, then laughed. "What a coincidence! My Rattata is also a mouse-type Pokémon! Let's see who's better! Rattata, Quick Attack!"

Rattata turned into a streak of white light, rushing toward Pikachu with considerable speed.

"Pikachu, Thunder Shock." Yuuto's tone was flat.

Pikachu didn't even move, simply puffing out its cheeks where it stood.

A golden current, far thicker and more concentrated than that of an ordinary Pikachu, struck out boldly.

It was launched second, yet arrived first!

Rattata didn't even have time to dodge before being swallowed by the violent current!

Charred all over and emitting wisps of smoke, it fell to the ground, its eyes turning into swirls.

One hit, an instant kill!

The entire field fell silent for a moment.

The boy in the cap gaped, staring blankly at his instantly defeated Rattata, then at the Pikachu opposite him, which looked composed as if it had just done something trivial.

"Ah??? W-what?!" The boy held his head and let out an incredulous cry.

"My Rattata! Defeated just like that? Why are they both mouse-type Pokémon, but your yellow one is so powerful! This isn't fair!"

Yuuto smiled and didn't explain.

A Pikachu with power training and the boost from a Light Ball was simply not on the same level as an ordinary Rattata.

"Good game." He called Pikachu back and walked to the side to watch the other matches.

On the other side, Misty's battle was also nearing its end.

Her opponent was a Mankey with a violent temper and fierce attacks.

But as the daughter of a Water-type Gym Leader, Misty's fundamentals were solid, and she took the win easily.

"I won!" Misty breathed a sigh of relief, recalled Staryu, and subconsciously tugged at her waistband.

She hadn't felt it while immersed in battle, but now that she had relaxed, the sensation of the lace became clear again… Her face flushed, and she quickly looked over at Delia's side to distract herself.

Delia's battle was the longest of the three.

Her opponent was a girl Trainer using a Geodude.

Delia was clearly commanding a proper battle for the first time; her instructions were a bit stiff, and she would sometimes hesitate.

Eevee, however, was quite impressive. Relying on the decent skills and reactions it had practiced while training with Pikachu, it moved nimbly across the field, alternating between Tackle, Quick Attack, and Sand Attack.

Geodude had good defense, but its speed couldn't match Eevee's. Several of its Rollout attacks were narrowly avoided by Eevee.

The battle fell into a stalemate.

"Eevee, keep it up!" Delia clenched her fists, fine beads of sweat appearing on her forehead, but her gaze became more and more focused.

She was gradually finding the rhythm.

"Geodude, keep using Rollout! Knock it away!" the opposing girl shouted.

Geodude curled into a ball again and rolled rapidly toward Eevee.

"Now!" Delia's eyes sharpened. "Eevee, jump up, then use your maximum power Quick Attack on its back!"

Eevee's hind legs pushed off hard, and it leapt high, precisely avoiding the path of the Rollout.

Reaching its peak height, its entire body was enveloped in white light as it dove down like a shooting star!

**Bang!!!**

The white light slammed hard into Geodude's relatively soft back, which had been exposed during the Rollout!

Geodude let out a cry of pain. Its Rollout was interrupted, and it tumbled away, struggling for a few moments without being able to get up immediately.

"Eevee, continuous Tackle!" Delia pressed the advantage.

Eevee didn't hesitate upon landing, charging forward in a flash of white light once more!

Once, twice, three times!

Geodude's eyes finally rolled back, and it lost the ability to fight.

"Yay! We won!" Delia gave a happy little cry, ran into the field, and picked up the slightly panting but bright-eyed Eevee. "Eevee, you were great! We won!"

"Ee-vui~"

Eevee affectionately rubbed its cheek against hers.

A round of friendly applause and whistles sounded from the surroundings.

Everyone gave their encouragement to the rookie Trainer and her Pokémon who had won her first official battle.

Misty was also happy for Delia.

Yuuto looked at the bright smile blooming on Delia's face as she held Eevee and smiled as well.

At the very moment Delia secured her victory and walked back to him and Misty holding Eevee…

…the familiar and wonderful notification sound of a completed mission suddenly rang in Yuuto's mind.
