Chapter 19 - Chapter 19

The car sat idle in the dimly lit parking area, engine humming softly beneath them. Outside, the city felt far away—muted to distant traffic and the occasional flicker of headlights passing at the edge of the lot.

Inside, it was just them. William didn't pull away immediately.

His forehead still rested lightly against Est's, their breaths steadying in sync after everything that had just happened.

Est closed his eyes for a second. Not to escape.

Just to feel the stillness. "…I didn't think it would hit like that," he admitted quietly.

William didn't ask what he meant.

He understood. "The questions?" William said softly.

Est nodded faintly. "And the way they look at us now."

William shifted slightly, just enough to look at him properly. "They've always looked at us," he said. "It's just different now."

"Yeah," Est exhaled. "Before, it was curiosity. Now it feels like… they're waiting for us to confirm something."

William leaned back slightly in his seat, but his hand didn't move far—still resting close to Est's. "They can wait."

Est let out a small breath of laughter. "You make it sound easy."

"It's not easy," William said. "It's just simple."

Est turned toward him, eyebrow raised. "That makes no sense."

William smiled faintly. "It means I know what matters, even if everything else gets complicated."

Est watched him for a moment.

There was something grounding about the way William spoke—not dismissive, not careless, but intentional.

"You've thought about this a lot, haven't you?" Est asked.

William nodded once. "I had to."

"Why?"

William hesitated—not long, but enough to make the answer feel deliberate. "Because once this became real…" he said quietly, "…it stopped being just about me."

Est's expression softened.

They didn't stay in the car forever. Eventually, the quiet settled into something comfortable instead of heavy.

William turned off the engine. "We should head inside," he said.

Est glanced around. "This is your place?"

William nodded toward the building behind them. "Old backup apartment. Hardly anyone knows about it."

Est smirked slightly. "You have secret apartments now?"

William shrugged. "Comes with the job."

They stepped out of the car, the cool air brushing against them again.

The building was older, quieter—no doorman, no cameras in the lobby, just a dim hallway with soft overhead lighting and the faint smell of polished wood and old paint.

Inside, the apartment was simple. Minimal furniture.

A couch, a small kitchen, a large window overlooking the darker side of the city. No personal photos. No signs of daily life.

Just a space that existed for moments like this.

Est walked in slowly, taking it in. "It's… quiet."

"That's the point."

The apartment door clicked shut behind them.

It wasn't loud—but in the stillness of the space, it echoed.

For the first time since leaving the studio, since the cameras, since the questions and flashing lights, everything stopped. No noise. No pressure. No eyes on them.

Just quiet.

Est stood near the center of the room, his back half-turned, fingers still loosely curled from where he'd dropped his jacket onto the couch. He didn't move right away.

It was like his body was still catching up.

William watched him from near the door. Not rushing. Not speaking. Just watching.

The shift didn't happen all at once. It built slowly. Deliberately.

Est exhaled, running a hand through his hair, then turning slightly—just enough to meet William's gaze. "You were different today."

His voice wasn't teasing this time. It carried weight.

William didn't deflect. "Different how?"

Est took a step closer.

The space between them shrank, but not enough to touch. "More intense," Est said. "More… controlled."

William tilted his head slightly, considering. "I was focused."

Est let out a quiet breath. "On the scene?"

William didn't hesitate this time. "On you."

The answer landed harder than expected.

Est stilled. Something shifted in his chest—tight, warm, unsettling in the best way.

He took another step closer. Now there was barely any distance left. "You don't have to do that," Est said softly.

William's gaze didn't waver. "I know."

"Then why do you?"

There was no teasing now. No deflection. Just honesty pressing between them.

William moved forward. One step. Close enough that Est could feel the warmth from him, the faint scent of his cologne mixed with the cool air from outside.

"Because I saw the way he leaned in," William said quietly.

Est blinked. "Leon?"

William nodded once. "And I didn't like it."

Est let out a soft, almost disbelieving breath. "You think I can't handle that?"

"That's not what I said."

"Then what are you saying?"

Now Est stepped even closer—close enough that their chests almost brushed.

The tension wasn't sharp anymore. It was heavy. Pulling.

William's voice lowered. "I'm saying I don't like the idea of anyone else thinking they can step into your space like that."

Est held his gaze. "And you think that's your place?"

William didn't look away. "Yes."

The honesty hit like a spark. Not possessive in a way that pushed. But in a way that claimed.

Est swallowed, his breath catching slightly. "You're intense," he whispered.

William's expression softened—just enough. "You knew that."

A pause. Then Est moved. Not away.Closer. Until there was no space left between them. "I don't mind it," he admitted.

William's hand lifted slowly, resting at Est's waist.

Warm. Steady. Grounding. "Good," William murmured.

Est's fingers curled lightly into the fabric of William's shirt. "You don't always have to protect me," he said—but his voice had softened, lost its earlier edge.

William leaned in slightly. "I know."

"Then why does it feel like you need to?"

A beat then William's thumb brushed slowly along Est's side.

'Because I want to.' He didn't say it this time. He showed it. In the way he didn't let the distance return. In the way his hand stayed firm, certain.

Est's breath hitched—barely noticeable, but there. "You don't get to control everything," Est whispered, though there was no real resistance behind it now.

William's lips ghosted just near his cheek—not touching, just close enough to feel. "I don't want to control everything."

His voice dropped lower. "Just the things that matter."

Est's eyes fluttered briefly. "And I matter?" he asked quietly.

William didn't answer with words.

His hand tightened slightly at Est's waist, pulling him just a fraction closer. Enough that yhe answer was clear.

Est let out a slow breath.

Then— "You already have me," he said.

Soft.

Certain.

Not dramatic.

Just real.

Something in William's expression shifted at that. Less guarded. More open. More there.

"Then don't pull away when it gets like this," William said quietly.

Est shook his head, a faint smile forming. "I'm not going anywhere."

The tension broke—but not by fading. By deepening.

Est leaned in first this time. Their lips met—not rushed, not hesitant—just sure. The kiss wasn't about proving anything.

It wasn't about escaping what had happened earlier. It was about this moment. The quiet. The closeness.

The unspoken understanding that everything outside those walls could wait. William's hand moved slightly along Est's back, drawing him in closer.

Est responded instantly, fingers tightening at William's shirt, pulling him just enough to erase the last trace of distance.

The kiss deepened—not faster, not urgent—but heavier. More deliberate. Like they were both choosing it. Again and again.

Est's breath caught softly between them, and he leaned into William fully now, letting himself be held without hesitation.

The world outside—the rumors, the cameras, the noise—fell further and further away.

There was no performance here. No audience. Just warmth. Breath. Hands that didn't let go.

William's forehead rested briefly against Est's as they paused, both slightly breathless. "Still think I'm being too intense?" he murmured.

Est let out a quiet laugh, barely there. "I think…"

He didn't finish. Instead, he pulled William back in. Closer. This time, there was no pause. No hesitation.

The connection between them deepened—hands, breath, warmth, everything blurring into something quieter, more private, more theirs.

The room dimmed around them.

The city lights beyond the window softened into a distant glow.

And everything else — Faded.

Outside, the city continued its restless rhythm—cars passing, distant sirens, lights flickering across buildings—but inside the apartment, time felt slower. Softer.

The kind of quiet that didn't feel empty. It felt full.

William lay back against the couch, one arm resting loosely around Est, who had settled close against him, their breathing gradually evening out.

Neither of them spoke right away. There was no need.

Est traced absentminded patterns along William's sleeve, his fingers moving slowly, like he was grounding himself in something real after everything that had happened.

"You ever notice," Est said after a while, his voice low, "how loud everything gets… until suddenly it's not?"

William tilted his head slightly, glancing down at him. "That's because you don't stop moving," he replied quietly. "You just… find somewhere the noise can't reach."

Est huffed a soft laugh. "So this is your secret hideout strategy?"

"Something like that."

A pause settled between them again—but this one felt lighter. Easier.

Est shifted slightly, resting his chin against William's shoulder so he could look at him properly. "You meant what you said earlier, didn't you?"

William didn't pretend not to understand. "Yeah."

"About… not letting them take this from us."

William's expression softened, but there was something steady underneath it—something grounded and certain. "I'm not giving this up to speculation," he said. "Or pressure. Or anything else."

Est watched him carefully. "And if it gets worse?"

"It probably will."

Est exhaled slowly. "Then what?"

William's hand moved slightly, brushing gently along Est's arm. "Then we deal with it," he said simply. "Together."

The word settled between them—together—not heavy, not overwhelming, just… right.

Est's gaze softened. "You make it sound so easy."

"It's not easy," William admitted. "But it's worth it."

That earned a quiet smile.

Est leaned back slightly, still close, but now just watching the way the dim light from the window outlined William's face. "You know what's funny?" Est said.

"What?"

"A few weeks ago, we were arguing over lines and blocking and who forgot their cues."

William smirked faintly. "You forgot your cues."

"I did not."

"You absolutely did."

Est nudged him lightly. "Okay, maybe once."

William chuckled softly. "And now?"

Est gestured vaguely between them. "Now we're… this."

William followed his gaze, then looked back at him. "Yeah."

There was no hesitation in it. No uncertainty. Just quiet acceptance.

The room grew quieter again, but not in the same way as before. This silence wasn't filled with tension. It was settled. Comfortable.

Est shifted, pulling the blanket draped over the couch slightly closer around them. "Stay a little longer?" he murmured.

William didn't even pretend to think about it. "Yeah."

Est relaxed against him again, his head resting just beneath William's chin.

For a while, they just stayed like that. No phones. No updates. No checking what the world was saying about them.

Because for once— It didn't matter.

Eventually, Est spoke again, quieter this time. "They're going to ask us about it tomorrow."

William nodded slightly. "Yeah."

"The photo. The way you grabbed my wrist. All of it."

"I know."

Est tilted his head, looking up at him again. "You ready for that?"

William met his gaze. "Are you?"

Est thought about it. Then nodded slowly. "I think so."

A small pause. "As long as we don't have to pretend with each other."

William's hand shifted, gently brushing Est's hair back from his face. "We don't."

That answer came easily. Without hesitation. Without doubt.

The city lights flickered outside the window, casting soft reflections across the floor.

Somewhere out there, their names were still trending. People were still guessing. Still watching. Still trying to piece together something that didn't belong to them.

But inside that quiet apartment— Just two people who had finally stopped running from something real.

Est let out a slow breath, his eyes closing briefly as he settled further into William's side. "Then we're okay," he murmured.

William's arm tightened slightly around him. "Yeah," he said quietly. "We are."

And this time— It didn't feel like a temporary escape. It felt like a decision.

A line drawn.

Not against the world— But for each other. Something steady. Something real. Something they weren't going to let go of.
