The Box: Fate
Chapter 76 — The Crucible of the Abyss
The obsidian war table was dismissed, but the heavy tension in the obsidian chamber remained.. The grand strategy was set, but Azureus and Gideon knew a harsh, unvarnished truth: possessing a newly awakened "Divine Status" and a "God Skill" meant nothing if your soul and physical vessel tore apart the moment you tried to channel them without a system interface to buffer the shock..
"Stop right there" Azureus commanded, his deep, thundering voice halting the sixteen friends as they turned to leave the war room..
Zanaki looked back, raising an eyebrow.. "What is it, dragon? The Ashen Gulf isn't going to clear itself out"
"You think you can just march into the trench and use your God Skills?" Azureus sneered slightly, his vertical silver eyes narrowing.. "Right now, your new divine affinities are like a high-explosive charge wrapped in glass.. The first time Zanaki calls down a full-scale primordial lightning strike, or Axel tries to anchor a tectonic shockwave without proper grounding, your own nervous systems will fry from the inside out"
Gideon crossed his massive arms, leaning against the obsidian wall.. "The dragon is right.. The system used to throttle your power output to keep you stable.. Now that the training wheels are gone, you have to forge your own control.. Before we move toward the Ashen Gulf, you are going into the "Crucible of the Abyss"
Kataki stepped forward, his silver eyes reflecting the amber glow of the magma pit.. "Where is it?"
"Beneath the citadel" Gideon grinned.. "The deep training caverns where the native elemental pressure is high enough to crush a regular soldier to dust. If you can master your new limits there over the next forty-eight hours, you'll be ready for the Demon Lords. If you can't... well, the trenches will bury you anyway"
"Step 1: The Descent into High-Pressure Mana"
Thirty minutes later, the sixteen teenagers stood inside a massive, circular cavern located miles beneath the citadel.. There were no lights except for the boiling rivers of crimson lava that ringed the perimeter.. The air here was so thick with natural, unrefined mana that it felt like breathing under ten feet of water..
"Find your spacing" Kataki instructed, his voice cutting clearly through the humid, roaring heat of the cavern.. He didn't speak as a commander issuing military orders, but as the one who knew the weight of their survival.. "Don't try to force your God Skills yet.. Feel the ambient pressure first.. Let the native energy settle into your blood"
Axel Hatanaki was the first to test the boundary.. He planted his boots into the black rock and attempted to activate his "Aegis of the Sun-King"
"CRACK!"
The sudden expansion of solar authority clashed violently with the heavy cave pressure, throwing Axel backward five feet.. He hit the stone floor hard, coughing up a mouthful of hot air as his shoulders spasmed..
"Too fast!" Murasaki called out, rushing to his side.. "You're trying to cast it like an old game spell! You have to synchronize your breathing with the cave's heartbeat!"
"Step 2: Mastering the Soul Limits"
Across the cavern, the training intensifies into a brutal, line-by-line crucible:
* "Zanaki' Primordial Spark: Zanaki sat cross-legged near a lava flow, his eyes tightly shut.. Every time he tried to summon his "Storm Monarch' Verdict" the sapphire lightning arced wildly out of control, singing his dark hair and tearing small gashes into his forearms.. "Damn it... it's too raw!" he growled.. Instead of fighting the electricity, he forced himself to relax, letting Azureus' mental guidance anchor him.. He began to guide the lightning through his veins like a calm, rolling river rather than an exploding bomb. With a soft hum, a stable, crown-like ring of blue static settled silently above his head without leaking a single stray spark..
* "Sharky Bee' Spatial Phase: Sharky was pushing his "Phantom Phase" to its absolute limit. Without the system's "Phantom Veil" hiding his footsteps, his physical shadow kept lagging behind his actual body, causing him to crash painfully into the rock walls whenever he tried to shift.. Taking a slow, deep breath, he stopped relying on speed and focused on density.. He visualized his shadow melting directly into the stone.. When he moved next, he slipped through the air completely silent, dissolving into the darkness without leaving a single disturbance in the dust,
"Murasaki and Kuro's Dual Resonance" Murasaki' catalyst staff vibrated uncontrollably as she tried to balance her gravity affinity against the crushing down-force of the cavern.. Beside her, Kuro acted as her anchor, his dark dagger suppressing the erratic mana fluctuations.. Together, they formed a closed, stable loop of spiritual energy, turning a volatile gravity vortex into a smooth, controlled sphere of absolute calm..
"Step 3: Kataki' Burden"
At the center of the cavern, Kataki stood alone near the edge of the deepest magma trench..
He hadn't drawn "The Twin Fangs of the Eclipse.. He stood completely still, his eyes closed, feeling the heavy, cold presence of his pact with the Angel of Death humming quietly in the back of his mind.. Every time he reached for his "Sovereign's Gaze, the hollow voids in his eyes threatened to drag his consciousness back into the gray limbo..
"You're holding back, boy" a voice echoed from the shadow of the tunnel entrance..
Vahn stood there, leaning against the stone with his arms crossed.. "You're afraid that if you use the native authority too deeply, the reaper will take another piece of your soul"
Kataki opened his eyes, the silver light within them razor-sharp and steady.. "I'm not holding back, Vahn.. I'm learning how to hold a blade that doesn't have a hilt"
Kataki raised his right hand.. He didn't summon the full skeletal entity—that was a catastrophic final resort.. Instead, he channeled just a fraction of the Angel' conceptual deletion authority directly into his fingertips..
FWOOSH..
A silent, absolute black flame flickered over his index finger.. Unlike Hina' fire or Axel' solar energy, this flame did not radiate heat.. Wherever it touched the air, the ambient mana particles simply ceased to exist, leaving a clean, perfectly smooth void in the space before him..
He had tamed the edge of death..
"Step 4: The Vanguards Unified"
Forty-eight hours passed in total isolation from the surface world. There were no clocks, no system timers, and no notifications to mark their progress.. There was only sweat, blood, discipline, and the relentless heat of the crucible..
When the massive iron doors of the training cavern finally swung open, Gideon and Azureus stepped inside..
The two native veterans stopped in their tracks.. The chaotic, unstable aura that had filled the room two days ago was completely gone.. In its place stood sixteen teenagers radiating a dense, terrifyingly balanced native pressure..
Zanaki stood effortlessly with crackling blue lightning humming calmly beneath his skin; Axel' frame looked like it was forged from solid granite; Sharky Bee was completely undetectable even when standing in plain sight; and Kataki stood at the front, his silver eyes cold, sharp, and entirely sovereign over his own power..
Gideon let out a slow, approving whistle, a fierce grin spreading across his face..
"Well, I'll be damned" the Apex King laughed, slamming his hand against his greatsword.. "You actually survived the crucible.. The Demon Lords at the Ashen Gulf are about to find out what happens when outworlders stop playing games and start becoming gods"
Kataki gripped his daggers, turning back to look at his friends. The training wheels were gone. The system was dead. They were ready for war...
