Chapter 78 — The Edge of the Blade

The winding mountain trail leading up to the Sky-Fortress of Astral-Vail was steep, biting with a sharp, glacial wind that whipped through the high-altitude pines.. The sixteen friends marched in a tight, disciplined formation, their breathing synchronized to conserve energy in the thin air..

Walking near the front of the procession, Azureus kept his eyes fixed on Kataki. The Dragon King' sapphire-lit gaze narrowed slightly as he replayed Kataki' earlier words about skill consistency in his mind.. Finally, unable to hold his curiosity back, the ancient entity slowed his stride to match Kataki' pace..

"Boy" Azureus spoke, his voice cutting through the whistling mountain wind.. "You told your comrades back in the citadel to rely strictly on their anchored God Skills and avoid inventing new techniques on the fly.. In the native warfare of this realm, evolution is survival.. If a warrior stops creating new pathways, they stagnate. Why restrict their potential?"

Kataki didn't look at him immediately.. His silver eyes remained locked on the winding stone path ahead, his mind calculating the structural density of the rocks around them using his "Sovereign's Gaze"

"Creativity is fine when you have infinite time, Azureus," Kataki replied, his voice calm and steady.. "In a video game, you test a hundred different spell combinations because death is just a respawn screen. But here? Every time you try to force a brand-new, untested output of divine mana without a system stabilizer, your neural pathways burn.. One miscalculation in mid-combat, and your heart stops"

Zanaki, overhearing the conversation from a few paces ahead, tossed a small spark of blue lightning between his fingers and laughed.. "Besides, Azureus, have you ever seen a guy try to invent a brand-new martial art while a multi-ton demon is trying to carve him into sushi? It's messy"

"That is not all" Kataki continued, his expression turning sharp.. "Spamming flashy skills creates a false sense of security.. If a demon lord adapts to your elemental trick, you're left helpless.. Instead of spreading our energy across fifty mediocre techniques, it's far deadlier to refine a single, perfected skill until it becomes an instant execution tool.. A master doesn't need a thousand moves; he only needs one that sends his enemy straight to the grave"

Azureus raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine respect crossing his ancient, scaled features.. "A lethal philosophy.. You speak more like an executioner than a teenage outworlder"

Kataki let out a short, dry chuckle, adjusting the collar of his cloak.. "Well, speaking of executioners... we can't rely entirely on divine skills or supernatural mana anyway.. From here on out, we're sharpening our physical game"

Axel Hatanaki turned his head back, grinning.. "What do you mean, Kataki?"

"I mean" Kataki said, cracking his knuckles as a cold, dangerous smirk touched his lips, "we are going back to the absolute basics.. Hand-to-hand combat.. CQC, strikes, joint-locks, and sheer physical conditioning"

Sharky Bee snorted, shaking his head.. "Hand-to-hand? Against towering demon lords covered in volcanic armor and razor-sharp scales? Are you trying to get us punched into orbit?"

"Not against them—with or without weapons when things get close quarters" Kataki corrected.. "Look, we might be living in a real, concrete world now, but let's not forget our roots.. We spent half our teenage years binge-watching action anime, reading manga, and arguing over martial arts choreography.. We aren't entirely strangers to how physical leverage works.. If our mana runs dry in the middle of a trench war, our bare hands and iron discipline are the only things left standing"

Zanaki burst out laughing, the sound echoing off the snowy cliffs.. "He' right! If anime has taught me anything, it's that the final boss always breaks your main weapon in chapter one, and you have to win the entire war using a desperate, bare-knuckle right hook to the jaw!"

"Speak for yourself" Murasaki smiled, adjusting her catalyst staff.. "I prefer keeping my distance.. But a few solid defensive throws wouldn't hurt"

Vahn, walking quietly near the rear of the group, smiled as he listened to the teenagers bantering.. For a moment, the heavy shadow of the looming war at the Ashen Gulf lifted.. They weren't just terrified kids running from a cosmic apocalypse anymore; they were a tightly knit unit of friends, adapting to their new reality with wit, grit, and an unshakeable bond..

"Keep your guards up, though" Gideon called out from the lead position, pointing toward the heavy bank of clouds ahead.. "The banter ends here.. We're entering the outer defense perimeter of the Sky-Fortress.. And judging by the static in the upper winds... Lady Selene is already expecting uninvited guests"
