Aria's POV
The city lights blurred past the window of my father's black sedan as we drove through the late-night traffic. Normally, my father would take business calls or scroll through emails during rides like this.
Tonight, he did neither.
He simply sat beside me, his jaw tight, staring straight ahead.
The tension in the car felt thick enough to suffocate me.
Finally, I couldn't take it anymore.
"You're overreacting."
The words slipped out before I could stop them.
My father turned slowly.
The look in his eyes was sharp enough to make my stomach twist.
"Am I?"
"Yes," I said, trying to keep my voice calm. "We were just talking."
"That man does not just talk, Aria."
I frowned.
"You make him sound like some kind of criminal."
My father let out a short, humorless laugh.
"You have no idea what kind of man Adrian Laurent is."
"Then tell me."
The words came out more desperate than I intended.
My father looked away again.
"No."
Frustration bubbled up inside me.
"Why not? You keep telling me to stay away from him, but you never explain why!"
"Because you don't need to know."
"That's not fair!"
The driver glanced nervously at us through the rearview mirror before quickly looking back at the road.
My father's voice lowered.
"Listen to me carefully, Aria."
Something in his tone made me sit up straighter.
"That man is dangerous."
The seriousness in his voice made a chill run down my spine.
"Dangerous how?"
My father hesitated.
And that hesitation told me more than his words ever could.
Finally, he said quietly, "Adrian Laurent built his empire in ways you wouldn't understand."
"That sounds like every billionaire ever."
"Not like him."
I crossed my arms.
"You're still not explaining anything."
My father's patience snapped.
"Because you're too young to understand!"
The sudden anger in his voice made me flinch.
For a moment, regret flickered across his face.
But it vanished just as quickly.
"You will not see him again," he said firmly.
"Father..."
"That's not a request."
The car fell silent again.
When we arrived home, I went straight to my room.
Our house was massive more like a private mansion tucked away in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the city. Normally, it felt luxurious.
Tonight it felt like a prison.
I kicked off my heels and collapsed onto my bed.
My mind replayed the evening over and over again.
Adrian's calm voice.
His intense gaze.
The way he had said my name.
Stay away from me.
The warning echoed in my head.
But instead of frightening me…
It only made me more curious.
Who exactly was Adrian Laurent?
And why was my father so afraid of him?
I sat up suddenly.
If my father wouldn't tell me the truth…
I would find it myself.
Ten minutes later, I was sitting at my desk with my laptop open.
I typed his name into the search bar.
Adrian Laurent.
Thousands of results appeared instantly.
News articles.
Business magazines.
Interviews.
Photos.
I clicked the first link.
ADRIAN LAURENT: THE BILLIONAIRE WHO BUILT AN EMPIRE FROM NOTHING.
A photograph filled the screen.
The same sharp eyes.
The same confident posture.
The article described his rise in the corporate world.
He had taken over a struggling company in his twenties and turned it into a global empire within a decade.
Technology.
Finance.
Real estate.
His influence stretched across industries.
The media called him brilliant, ruthless, and untouchable.
But what caught my attention most were the rumors.
Laurent is known for keeping his private life extremely secret.
Many believe he has connections within elite underground circles.
Sources claim the billionaire hosts exclusive private events attended by powerful figures.
My curiosity deepened.
What kind of events?
Another article mentioned something else.
Despite his wealth and fame, Adrian Laurent has never been publicly linked to a serious relationship.
That surprised me.
A man like him could have anyone he wanted.
Yet there were no girlfriends.
No scandals.
No messy breakups.
Just mystery.
I leaned back in my chair.
The more I read…
The more Adrian Laurent seemed like a puzzle.
And I had always loved solving puzzles.
My phone buzzed suddenly on the desk.
A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.
My heart skipped.
I picked it up slowly.
Unknown Number:
Curiosity can be dangerous, Aria.
My stomach dropped.
Another message appeared immediately after.
You should have listened to your father.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
There was only one person who could possibly know I was researching him.
I typed back quickly.
Aria:
How did you get my number?
A few seconds passed.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Unknown Number:
I have my ways.
A strange thrill ran through me.
I hesitated before replying again.
Aria:
Are you always this mysterious, Mr. Laurent?
The response came almost instantly.
Adrian:
Only when necessary.
I stared at the screen, my heart beating faster.
My phone buzzed again.
Adrian:
You really should stop looking into things that don't concern you.
I smirked slightly.
Aria:
That sounds like a challenge.
Three dots appeared on the screen.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally, his reply came.
Adrian:
You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.
My pulse quickened.
Aria:
Then maybe you should show me.
The reply took longer this time.
Nearly a full minute passed.
Then the message appeared.
Adrian:
Be careful what you wish for, Aria.
I stared at the words on the screen.
A strange mixture of excitement and nervousness swirled inside me.
Because something told me this conversation wasn't supposed to be happening.
And yet…
I couldn't bring myself to stop.
Across the city, somewhere in the darkness, Adrian Laurent was watching.
