Chapter 1 - THE GIRL IN THE FOG

The fog rolled slowly through the tall pine trees, swallowing the narrow dirt road that led into the quiet town of Blackridge. It crept along the ground like a living thing, wrapping itself around the wooden bus stop and the cracked pavement beneath it.

The old bus hissed as it came to a stop.

Aria Vale stepped down onto the road, her boots touching the cold ground as the door shut behind her. The bus driver gave her a brief nod before the vehicle pulled away, its headlights fading into the thick gray mist.

Within seconds, the sound of the engine disappeared.

Aria stood there alone.

She adjusted the strap of her backpack and looked around. The town seemed almost deserted. A single flickering streetlight buzzed above her head, and the wooden sign beside the road creaked as the wind pushed against it.

WELCOME TO BLACKRIDGE

Population: 3,214

Aria sighed.

"Great," she muttered quietly. "Another strange town."

Moving had always been a part of her life. Her adoptive parents rarely stayed in one place for long. New schools, new houses, new streets—she had grown used to it.

But this place felt… different.

Blackridge was surrounded by forest in every direction. Tall pine trees stood like silent guards around the town, their dark shapes barely visible through the fog.

It felt like the woods were watching.

Aria shook her head slightly, brushing the thought away.

"You're just tired," she told herself.

She pulled the folded piece of paper from her pocket and read the address her adoptive mother had written.

Pine Street, House 17.

Apparently that was where they would be staying once the rest of their things arrived. Her parents were still back in the city finishing the move, which meant she had arrived first.

Alone.

Aria began walking down the quiet road toward the town.

The air was cold, and the fog made everything feel strangely silent. The buildings that appeared through the mist looked old—brick stores, small cafés, and a gas station that seemed like it hadn't changed in decades.

A wooden clock tower stood in the center of the town square.

The clock read 7:12 PM.

Aria walked past the empty shops, her footsteps echoing faintly against the pavement.

"Maybe it'll look better in daylight," she said softly.

But as she continued walking, something strange happened.

The forest beside the road suddenly went quiet.

Completely quiet.

No wind.

No birds.

No insects.

Aria slowed down.

A strange chill crawled down her spine, making her shoulders tense.

Then she heard it.

A howl.

Long.

Low.

And distant.

Aria stopped walking completely.

"That… was definitely a wolf," she whispered.

She glanced toward the forest, but the fog hid everything beyond the first few rows of trees.

Still, the sound made her uneasy.

Blackridge suddenly felt even more isolated than before.

She quickened her pace, gripping the straps of her backpack as she continued down the road.

What she didn't see were the golden eyes watching her from deep within the trees.

Hidden among the shadows, a massive black wolf stood perfectly still. Its powerful body blended into the darkness, but its eyes glowed faintly in the fog.

The wolf inhaled slowly.

Then froze.

A scent drifted through the cold air.

Soft.

Warm.

And unbelievably powerful.

The wolf's ears snapped forward.

Miles away, inside a large house surrounded by iron gates, a man suddenly lifted his head.

Kael Draven stood near the tall windows of the pack house, staring out at the forest beyond.

The Alpha of the Blackridge Pack rarely showed emotion, but tonight his entire body went rigid.

A scent had just reached him.

Something he had never expected to feel again.

His wolf stirred violently beneath his skin.

Mate.

Kael's golden eyes flashed.

"That's impossible," he murmured.

For months, the pack had sensed something strange in the territory. A faint presence that felt like a Luna's aura. But their Luna had died years ago, and no one else carried that power.

Yet the scent in the air now was undeniable.

Stronger than any wolf he had ever encountered.

Ancient.

Royal.

Kael clenched his fists.

"Find her," he ordered quietly to the wolves gathered in the room behind him.

The others looked at him in confusion.

"Alpha?" one of them asked.

Kael's voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.

"There's a girl in this town," he said. "And she carries the scent of a Luna."

Back on the empty road, Aria reached the edge of Pine Street.

The houses here were small but neat, each with wooden fences and dim porch lights glowing through the fog.

She checked the numbers until she found the right one.

House 17.

A small two-story home sat quietly at the end of the street.

Aria walked up the path and pulled the spare key from beneath the flowerpot, exactly where her mother had said it would be.

The door creaked softly as she pushed it open.

Inside, the house smelled faintly of dust and fresh paint.

Boxes were stacked against the walls, and the furniture had been covered with white sheets.

"Home sweet home," she muttered.

She dropped her backpack on the couch and stretched her arms.

Outside, the wind picked up slightly, rustling the trees.

Somewhere deep in the forest, wolves began to howl again.

Aria paused.

For some reason, the sound didn't feel frightening anymore.

It felt… familiar.

She shook the strange feeling away and headed upstairs to find her room.

What she didn't know was that the moment she had stepped into Blackridge, everything had changed.

The wolves had sensed her.

The Alpha had felt her.

And something ancient inside her had finally begun to wake.

Aria Vale believed she was just a normal girl starting life in a new town.

But she was wrong.

She was the Luna.

And she had no idea what she truly was.
