Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Pinning of the Guard

The golden light radiating from the newly claimed d-file didn't just illuminate the silver dirt—it burned straight into the atmospheric mana of Sector 2, cutting a glowing, fifty-mile vector directly through the heart of the Azure Grid.

At the far end of that vector stood Castell-8, the secondary spire city of the Upper Board.

The city was built like a massive, hexagonal fortress, suspended five hundred feet above the ground by six colossal antigravity pylons. Surrounding its perimeter was a shimmering, emerald-green barrier—the Absolute Perimeter Shield, a high-tier defensive array capable of withstanding direct planetary bombardment from high-rank units.

Itachi stood twenty yards outside the barrier's perimeter trench, his black tunic unblemished, his golden eyes reflecting the emerald pulse of the forcefield.

[Location: Outer Perimeter — Fortress Castell-8]

[Targeting Vector: File-d, Rank-7 (Enemy Stronghold)]

[Active Title: Passant Sentinel (First Rank Boundary Cleared)]

[Promotion Status: Rank 2 Pawn (Advanced Anchor)]

Beside his shoulder, the bronze scout drone hovered in place, its optical lens scanning the massive structure.

"Master Itachi," the drone reported, its voice trembling slightly. "The shield is anchored directly to the city's four primary mana towers. As long as those towers are operational, the shield regenerates its density every 0.05 seconds. Standard attacks won't even scratch it."

"Standard attacks rely on force," Itachi replied softly, his voice low and steady. "Defensive structures rely on geometry."

He looked up at the parapets of the floating fortress.

Standing along the battlements were two dozen heavy defenders—Hegemony Rook Sentinels (Level 48). They were massive, eight-foot tall constructs forged from dense, black iron, holding tower shields that locked together to form a seamless metallic wall.

Behind them stood the city's defense commander: Rook-Commander Geth (Level 52).

Geth was a towering, fortress-class entity encased in polished obsidian plate armor shaped like a crenellated tower. In his right hand, he held a massive, double-headed warhammer that crackled with high-density gravitational mana.

"Pawn!" Geth's voice boomed down from the parapets, echoing across the open plains like thunder. "You have pushed your file further than any scrap unit in three centuries! But this is the seventh rank! Here, the lines do not bend for minor anomalies!"

Geth slammed his warhammer against the stone parapet, sending a shockwave of green light pulsing through the emerald shield.

"Castell-8 is an absolute defensive node!" Geth shouted. "Our shield is pinned to the very bedrock of the planetary core! You cannot breach it without a siege-class army!"

Itachi adjusted his cuffs, taking a slow, measured step toward the perimeter trench.

"A pin," Itachi deadpanned, "is only effective if the piece behind it is worth protecting."

[Grandmaster Sight: Active]

[Analyzing Defensive Topology...]

[Primary Node Identified: Central Core Pylon (Rank-8 Anchor)]

[Secondary Node Identified: Rook-Commander Geth (Rank-7 Defender)]

[Structural Flaw Detected: Absolute Alignment Error]

To the defenders on the wall, the emerald shield was an impenetrable wall of raw energy. To Itachi's analytical vision, the shield, Commander Geth, and the central mana pylon were lined up in a single, flawless straight line along the d-file.

A classic Absolute Pin.

"You anchored your shield to your commander," Itachi observed, raising his carbon-steel rod. "And your commander is anchored to the central core. By linking your defenses in a straight line, you have made it impossible to move one without destroying the other."

Geth's glowing red optical sensors flickered with a sudden beat of uncertainty. "What are you talking about?! The alignment increases our power distribution by four hundred percent!"

"It increases your vulnerability," Itachi corrected.

[Skill Sync: Absolute Pin (Tactical Exploitation)]

[Rule Applied: A pinned piece cannot move off the vector of alignment.]

Itachi didn't attack the shield. He drove the tip of his carbon-steel rod into the ground at his feet, targeting the foundational line of the d-file.

TAP.

A thin, golden line of mana shot through the dirt, traveling under the perimeter trench, straight through the emerald barrier, and slammed into the base of Commander Geth's obsidian boots on the parapet above.

CRACK.

Geth stiffened. His eight-foot obsidian frame froze in place, his heavy warhammer locked mid-air.

"My... my servos!" Geth grunted, his internal HUD flashing wild amber warnings. "I can't shift my weight! My mobility matrix is completely locked!"

"Commander!" one of the Rook Sentinels shouted. "The shield's energy loop is reversing! It's forcing your core to sustain the entire barrier's resistance!"

"He didn't break the shield," Geth realized, his optical sensors widening in horror as he looked down at the silent figure below. "He... he pinned my core to the barrier's frequency!"

"In chess," Itachi said, walking calmly across the perimeter trench, his boots making faint clicks on the stone bridge, "when a heavy piece is pinned against its own King, moving it is an illegal turn. And standing still simply leaves it exposed to a forced trade."

Itachi stopped directly beneath the hovering fortress, looking up at the frozen Rook-Commander.

[Skill Sync: Passant Sentinel (Rank-2 Sub-Authority)]

[Vector Lock: Vertical Shear]

Itachi didn't jump. He didn't raise his rod to strike. He simply flicked his wrist upward, executing a simple upward pointer gesture with two fingers.

[Release: Pinned Kinetic Transfer]

BOOOOOOM!

The four hundred percent power distribution Geth had bragged about didn't project outward to block an attack—it surged inward, trapped between the pinned barrier and his own locked core.

The emerald shield didn't shatter; it collapsed inward like a dying star, dragging Commander Geth's obsidian armor into the center of the structural vector. The parapets of Castell-8 cracked and crumbled, thousands of tons of black stone collapsing into the central courtyard as the entire front wall of the fortress sheared cleanly in half along the d-file.

THOOOOOM!

The massive, eight-hundred-pound Rook-Commander was driven straight down from the wall, crashing through his own crumbling battlements to land in a smoking heap of broken stone and shattered obsidian armor directly in front of Itachi's boots.

[Target Neutralized: Rook-Commander Geth (Level 52)]

[XP Gained: 340,000]

[Acquired Item: Crest of the Absolute Fortress (Grade-S Core Component)]

[Rank-7 Defensive Node: Cleared]

The smoke cleared slowly, revealing the ruined gateway of Castell-8. The remaining Rook Sentinels on the surviving walls were completely silent, their weapons lowered, their targeting arrays paralyzed by the sheer mathematical absurdity of what had just occurred in under three seconds.

The bronze scout drone flew through the ruined gateway, its optical lens taking in the wide, open path leading straight into the inner sanctum of the spire city.

"Master Itachi..." the drone whispered, its voice filled with awe. "The city's primary defenses are completely offline... The path to the Sector 2 High Board Regent is wide open!"

Itachi stepped over the shattered warhammer resting in the dirt, his black tunic settling smoothly back into place as he walked past the ruined gates of Castell-8.

"The seventh rank is cleared," Itachi deadpanned, his golden eyes fixed on the central spire towering in the distance. "Next is the back rank."
