Chapter 2 - The City Above The Clouds

The city of Neo-Astra floated high above the silver clouds like a crown placed upon the sky.

At night, it looked almost unreal.

Thousands of towering skyscrapers pierced the heavens, their glass walls reflecting a sea of neon lights. Streams of flying vehicles moved through the open air like glowing rivers, weaving between buildings in organized traffic lanes. Massive digital billboards hovered beside towers, displaying everything from luxury genetic enhancements to the newest instant-healing nanomedicine.

Below the city, hidden beneath layers of cloud and atmosphere, the old world still existed—oceans, forests, mountains, and forgotten lands where ancient races had once fought devastating wars.

But Neo-Astra had risen above all of that.

It was the city of the future.

The city of immortals.

Here, sickness was nearly nonexistent. Advanced biotechnology repaired injuries in minutes. Nanite treatments purified blood, removed toxins, and slowed aging so dramatically that most citizens easily lived two hundred years or more.

Everyone was beautiful.

Perfect.

Tall figures walked glowing sky bridges between towers. Their skin flawless, their bodies sculpted by both evolution and technology. Genetic upgrades were common, and even the poorest residents carried medical nanites in their bloodstream.

But Neo-Astra was more than just a technological miracle.

It was a melting pot of power.

Hidden among the humans were ancient bloodlines—beings who had existed long before cities touched the clouds.

Vampires walked the night districts.

Lycans ruled the industrial sectors.

Elven corporations controlled bio-engineering labs.

Sirens ran the ocean trade networks.

And somewhere in the shadows, far older forces watched quietly.

Neo-Astra was peaceful.

Mostly.

But peace in this city was always fragile.

Because power attracted conflict.

And tonight, something in the city was about to change.

A transport shuttle descended slowly through the clouds, its sleek black body reflecting the glow of distant towers.

Inside the cabin, a young man sat alone.

He watched the city appear through the window.

Neo-Astra.

Even from the distance of several kilometers, the floating metropolis looked enormous. Entire districts hung suspended by massive gravitational stabilizers, each connected by luminous skyways and transportation rings.

The young man studied the city silently.

His name was Kael.

He had never been here before.

Yet something about the city made him uneasy.

A strange feeling stirred deep inside him, like a distant echo calling his name.

Kael leaned back slightly in his seat.

Soft white lighting illuminated the cabin interior, reflecting faintly in his eyes.

They were an unusual shade of grey.

Not dull.

Not pale.

But deep and metallic, almost like liquid silver.

People often stared at them.

But his eyes were not the most striking thing about him.

His gaze had a unique shape—long and elegant, with slightly upturned outer corners that gave his expression a mysterious sharpness.

Ancient texts might have described them as phoenix eyes.

But Kael did not know that.

He had spent most of his life far away from cities like Neo-Astra.

Hidden.

Protected.

Watched.

He brushed a strand of black hair away from his face and returned his attention to the window.

The shuttle passed through the outer traffic ring.

Immediately, dozens of flying vehicles surrounded them—sleek civilian transports, cargo drones, luxury sky cars, and patrol ships from the city security force.

The air traffic system was perfectly synchronized.

Even thousands of vehicles moved with almost effortless precision.

Kael felt the faint vibration of the shuttle adjusting course automatically.

A soft voice came from the cabin speakers.

"Arrival in Neo-Astra Central Terminal in three minutes. Please remain seated until landing procedures are complete."

Kael barely noticed the announcement.

His attention had shifted elsewhere.

Something strange had happened.

Just for a moment.

He had felt… something.

Like a pulse.

A ripple of energy moving through the air.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

The sensation vanished as quickly as it appeared.

Perhaps it was just turbulence.

Or the electromagnetic fields surrounding the city.

Still…

The feeling lingered faintly in the back of his mind.

Kael exhaled slowly.

He was probably overthinking.

This was his first time in a city this large.

It was natural to feel overwhelmed.

Outside the window, the shuttle descended toward a massive platform extending from one of the city's lower districts.

Hundreds of landing pads filled the structure, each guiding incoming transports with glowing blue navigation lights.

The shuttle lowered smoothly.

Soft mechanical sounds echoed as landing clamps secured the vessel.

A moment later, the cabin door slid open.

Warm city air flowed inside.

Kael stood and stepped into the terminal.

Immediately, the scale of Neo-Astra surrounded him.

The terminal alone was enormous—several stories tall, filled with glass walkways, suspended gardens, and holographic information displays.

Thousands of people moved through the space.

Humans.

But also others.

A tall man with faint silver markings across his skin walked past him, likely an elf.

Two women with slightly glowing eyes spoke quietly near the exit—probably sirens.

And in the distance, Kael noticed a figure whose presence caused several nearby pedestrians to instinctively move aside.

The man was large.

Broad shoulders.

Powerful build.

His posture radiated a natural authority that was difficult to ignore.

For a brief second, Kael felt something strange again.

A flicker.

Like two forces brushing against each other.

But the feeling disappeared before he could identify its source.

The large man continued walking toward another exit without noticing him.

Kael watched him go for a moment.

Then shook his head slightly.

He was imagining things.

He adjusted the small bag hanging from his shoulder and moved toward the terminal exit.

Outside, Neo-Astra truly revealed itself.

Towering buildings stretched endlessly in every direction.

Sky bridges crossed open air between massive structures.

Digital signs hovered beside walkways.

And above it all, the night sky shimmered with thousands of flying lights.

The city felt alive.

Energy pulsed through every street.

Music drifted from open entertainment districts.

Street vendors sold glowing drinks and exotic foods.

Artificial trees lined pedestrian roads, their leaves softly illuminated by bio-luminescent patterns.

Kael stepped onto a sky bridge connecting the terminal to the main district.

For a moment, he stopped walking.

The view was breathtaking.

Below the bridge, hundreds of meters down, another layer of the city glowed like a second world.

Neo-Astra was not just one level.

It was dozens.

A vertical civilization.

Kael rested his hands on the railing.

Cold metal pressed against his palms.

He watched the endless traffic of flying vehicles move through the air.

Something inside him stirred again.

Stronger this time.

A faint warmth spreading through his chest.

He frowned slightly.

That sensation again.

But this time it lasted longer.

Almost like…

Recognition.

As if something within him was responding to the city itself.

Or perhaps to someone inside it.

Kael straightened slowly.

His grey eyes scanned the skyline.

Thousands of windows.

Millions of people.

Whatever he had felt could have come from anywhere.

Or nowhere at all.

He exhaled quietly.

He had only just arrived.

It was too early to start imagining things.

Still…

Deep inside him, a quiet voice seemed to whisper.

Something in this city was waiting for him.

And somewhere else in Neo-Astra, far above the district where Kael now stood, two other individuals unknowingly felt faint disturbances in the invisible energy flowing through the world.

Neither of them understood what it meant yet.

But soon, all three of their lives would collide.

And when they did—

The balance of power in Neo-Astra would begin to change.

Forever.
