Chapter 9 -  The Wolf Who Guards the City

The wind above Neo-Astra carried the faint scent of ozone.

Storm clouds had begun forming over the lower sectors of the city, swirling slowly above the industrial districts like dark waves gathering before a coming tide.

Most citizens didn't notice.

The weather control systems normally kept the skies above the city stable, adjusting temperature, wind, and humidity with near-perfect precision.

But tonight the atmosphere was shifting.

And one person had noticed it long before the clouds appeared.

Orion Stormfang stood on the edge of a towering structure overlooking Sector Nine.

The building was part of Neo-Astra's outer security grid, a high observation tower used by the city's defense forces to monitor lower districts and industrial transport routes.

From this height, the view was immense.

Miles of glowing city lights stretched in every direction.

But Orion's attention was focused downward.

Toward the darker part of the city.

Sector Nine.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

The strange energy that had erupted from Kael earlier still lingered faintly in his memory. The triangular resonance between the three of them had been impossible to ignore.

Orion had fought monsters, rogue lycans, enhanced mercenaries, and even ancient supernatural creatures during his years protecting parts of the city.

But he had never felt anything like that before.

Not even close.

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"First day in the city and he nearly breaks reality," Orion muttered to himself.

His gaze drifted toward the far skyline.

Neo-Astra's upper districts glowed like constellations suspended above the clouds.

Beautiful.

Calm.

But Orion knew the truth about cities like this.

The higher you climbed, the more people pretended everything was perfect.

The real battles always happened below.

In the forgotten sectors.

Where the law became flexible.

And monsters occasionally crawled out of places they didn't belong.

Orion exhaled slowly.

The tension in the air was growing stronger.

He could feel it.

And his instincts rarely lied.

A faint beep echoed from the small device attached to his belt.

Orion glanced down and tapped the display.

A holographic interface appeared instantly.

SECURITY ALERT: SECTOR NINE DISTURBANCE DETECTED

Orion frowned.

"Already?"

The alert expanded automatically.

Surveillance footage appeared.

Aerial drone recordings from the industrial district.

Dark smoke rising from an abandoned factory complex.

Energy readings spiking rapidly.

And then—

The ground cracking open.

Orion leaned closer to the hologram.

"What the hell…"

The footage continued.

Something massive pushed upward from the earth.

A monstrous claw tearing through concrete.

Then the rest of the creature followed.

It was enormous.

At least three times larger than the demon Orion had fought earlier.

Thick armored plates covered its body.

Its eyes burned like molten metal.

And every step it took cracked the pavement beneath it.

The creature roared.

Even through the drone's audio filters, the sound was terrifying.

Orion's jaw tightened.

"Okay… that's a problem."

The hologram shifted again.

Another alert appeared.

CITY DEFENSE RESPONSE DEPLOYED

Several patrol vehicles appeared in the footage, moving toward the creature.

Energy weapons fired.

Bright beams of concentrated plasma struck the demon's body.

The monster barely reacted.

Its claws swung outward.

One of the vehicles exploded instantly.

The others retreated.

Orion turned off the display.

The wind around the tower intensified slightly.

"Well," he muttered.

"Looks like I'm working tonight."

He stepped away from the railing.

As he did, the faint storm clouds above the city responded.

Lightning flickered briefly inside the darkening sky.

Orion walked toward the elevator platform at the center of the tower.

The doors opened the moment he approached.

Inside the elevator, soft lighting illuminated the small enclosed space.

Orion stepped inside and tapped the control panel.

"Ground access."

The elevator began descending instantly.

Glass walls revealed the city sliding upward as the platform dropped rapidly through the tower.

Orion folded his arms.

His reflection stared back at him from the glass.

Stormfang.

The name carried weight.

For generations, his family had served as guardians of several major territories.

Not kings.

Not rulers.

Protectors.

That was the role of the Stormfang bloodline.

Orion had inherited that responsibility whether he liked it or not.

Most days he didn't mind.

But nights like this reminded him how complicated the job could become.

The elevator reached the bottom level with a soft chime.

The doors slid open.

Orion stepped out into the dimly lit street below.

His vehicle waited nearby.

A sleek silver transport designed for high-speed aerial movement.

He walked toward it.

But halfway there—

He stopped.

The strange sensation from earlier returned.

That faint resonance in the air.

Orion turned slowly.

Two figures were standing across the street.

Kael.

And Lucien.

Orion blinked.

"Well that's convenient."

Kael looked slightly surprised to see him.

Lucien, however, did not.

The vampire prince's expression remained calm.

Almost amused.

"You felt it too," Lucien said quietly.

Orion nodded.

"Sector Nine."

Kael spoke next.

"There's another demon."

Lucien tilted his head slightly.

"Stronger than the first."

Orion walked toward them.

"You two planning to help?"

Lucien smiled faintly.

"I was already on my way."

Kael hesitated briefly.

Then nodded.

"I should go too."

Orion studied him carefully.

"You sure about that?"

Kael met his gaze.

"Yes."

Lucien observed the exchange silently.

Then he stepped closer.

The faint pressure in the air returned again.

Not hostile.

But noticeable.

Three separate energies brushing against each other.

Storm.

Blood.

And something far older.

Lucien spoke quietly.

"Then we should not waste time."

Orion grinned.

"Finally something we all agree on."

He gestured toward his transport vehicle.

"Get in."

Kael climbed into the passenger seat.

Lucien sat calmly in the back.

The vehicle lifted into the air with a low hum.

Within seconds they were flying above the streets of Neo-Astra.

Orion pushed the engine harder.

The city lights blurred beneath them.

Ahead, dark smoke rose into the night sky from Sector Nine.

Lightning flickered faintly inside the growing storm clouds.

Orion glanced briefly at Kael.

"You realize something?"

"What?"

"You arrived in the city six hours ago."

Kael nodded slowly.

Orion smirked slightly.

"And now we're chasing our second demon of the night."

Kael didn't respond.

Lucien spoke from the back seat.

"Coincidence rarely repeats itself so quickly."

The vehicle accelerated again.

The industrial district grew closer.

The smoke column thicker.

And beneath it—

Something enormous moved through the streets.

Kael felt the strange energy inside his chest flare again.

But this time it felt different.

The creature below wasn't just reacting to him.

It was searching for him.

The demon roared again.

The sound echoed through the city like distant thunder.

Orion smiled.

"Well," he said, tightening his grip on the controls.

"Let's go see what kind of monster thinks it can break my city."

The vehicle shot forward into the dark clouds above Sector Nine.

And below them—

The second battle of the night was about to begin.
