Cherreads

Chapter 4 - Chapter Three

For several hours, the Royal Guard scoured every corner of the palace. They searched the lavish chambers, the hidden passageways, the stables, and even the kitchens, leaving no stone unturned. Yet, every search ended the same way—empty hands and rising frustration.

The queen, perched in her gilded chair, could barely contain her rising panic. Her hands trembled as she clutched the edges of her gown. "How… how is this possible? Every room, every corridor… she was supposed to be here!"

The king's face darkened with worry. "Gather all the guards. Search the courtyards, the gardens, even the outer walls. She cannot have left unnoticed. Someone must know something!"

The captain of the guards bowed, his expression grim. "Yes, Your Majesty. We will expand the search immediately."

Even the Grand Duke, though unaware of the true situation, had left a shadow of confusion in the palace. Now, with the wedding day hanging in jeopardy, the royal family faced a crisis unlike any they had ever imagined.

Meanwhile, far from the gilded halls and gold-trimmed walls, the real Princess Alexandra Kingsley of Eldoria pushed herself harder in her military training. She could hear nothing of the chaos she had left behind, only the sound of her own heartbeat, the clanging of swords, and the commands of her officers.

The princess had escaped the palace, and for now, the kingdom had no idea that their most precious jewel had slipped right through their fingers.

---

At the military training grounds, the sun had barely risen, but the air was biting cold. Alexandra and the other recruits lined up, shivering despite their uniforms. The commanding officer stood before them, his expression as cold and unyielding as the winter air.

"Enough standing around!" he barked. "If you want to survive as soldiers, you must endure discomfort, hardship, and pain. This is the first test of your discipline!"

Before Alexandra could react, the commander gestured sharply, and a group of guards pushed the recruits into a large basin of freezing water. Alexandra gasped as icy water engulfed her, seeping through her clothes and biting at her skin. She struggled to keep her head above the surface, her teeth chattering violently.

The men around her groaned and cursed, but Alexandra gritted her teeth. I am not a princess here. I am a soldier. I will not give up.

Hours—or maybe just minutes, it was hard to tell—passed like a nightmare of cold and struggle. Every muscle ached, every breath burned in her chest, but Alexandra refused to sink. She kicked, pushed, and clawed her way to the edge, determined to endure whatever the military threw at her.

When at last the commander called an end to the exercise, Alexandra collapsed onto the frozen ground, drenched and shivering, but alive and unbroken.

A faint smile tugged at her lips despite the numbness in her limbs. If this is what it takes to become a general… I will endure it. I will conquer it. I will rise above it.

The other recruits looked at her differently now—not as a princess or newcomer, but as someone with fire and willpower. Alexandra had taken her first step into a world that demanded strength, courage, and heart—and she had survived.

---

As the recruits trudged back to their quarters, dripping wet and exhausted from the freezing water training, whispers began to ripple through the group like wildfire.

"You've heard, haven't you?" one soldier muttered, glancing around to make sure no officers were near.

"About who?" another asked, curiosity piqued despite fatigue.

"The Grand General," the first replied, a hint of awe and fear in his voice. "They say he's no ordinary commander. Edward… the former Grand Duke… now leads the army here. Some say he's stricter than any officer alive—and colder than the ice we just endured."

A few of the recruits shivered—not just from the lingering cold—but from the thought of facing Edward the Grand General in battle or training.

"He's… legendary," another voice joined. "They say no one has ever dared challenge him and lived to tell the tale. The way he commands, the way he moves… it's like he can see through every weakness."

Even in their tired, chattering state, a murmur of excitement and fear ran through the camp. To them, Edward was a figure of power, respect, and intimidation, someone whose very presence could inspire—and terrify.

Meanwhile, Alexandra listened quietly, curiosity flickering in her tired eyes. She had heard of Edward in passing, of course, but the way the recruits whispered about him made her heart beat faster. A Grand Duke turned Grand General…? she thought. He must be extraordinary. If I'm going to become a general, I'll have to measure myself against someone like him.

And deep down, Alexandra felt a spark of anticipation. Somewhere beyond the icy training grounds and the gossiping soldiers, a new challenge—and perhaps a new ally or rival—was waiting for her.

---

Word spread quickly through the barracks: the Grand General was coming. The commanding officer's announcement was clear and cold:

"Effective immediately, you will be under the command of the Grand General. Prepare yourselves."

A wave of murmurs swept through the recruits. Eyes widened, and whispers filled the halls.

"Grand General…?" one soldier muttered, voice trembling. "Is that… Edward? The former Grand Duke?"

"Yes," another replied, fear evident in his tone. "They say he's colder than ice itself. No mercy, no leniency. The training… it's the hardest anyone has ever endured."

Some recruits paled at the thought. A few shook their heads, muttering about quitting, leaving the barracks, even running away. If this is what awaits, I don't want any part of it…

Alexandra, standing among the soldiers, felt a mixture of nerves and anticipation. She had endured freezing water, grueling drills, and hours of exhaustion—but now, a legend was coming. The Grand General, feared and revered across the kingdom, would judge her strength, her resolve, and her potential.

The air in the barracks seemed to grow heavier with tension, every heartbeat amplified. Soon, the figure of Edward the Grand General would appear, and the true test of Alexandra's determination—and courage—would begin.
