As soon as she left the room, she leaned against the wall just outside his room to catch her breath.
It pained her to treat him that way, but for some reason… she didn't want him to think she cared so much.
He had just been staring at her the whole time… as if he were wondering what she was saying all the while.
Were his mental faculties still intact?
She instinctively wrapped her robe tighter around herself.
He had seen the mark… there was no mistaking that.
But there was a slim chance that he would attribute it to himself, or remember what had happened.
Drawing a deep, heavy breath, she went down the hallway and descended the stairs that led below.
A few servants still moved about the hallway, and there were even more gathered in the kitchen.
"Helena." Eve called out softly.
The woman with wide brown eyes turned around. So did the rest.
Greetings and courtesies went around.
"Have a bowl of soup prepared. Bartwick will retrieve it from you."
