Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The First Glance

The next morning, I walked into the classroom a little earlier than usual. My bag felt heavier than normal, not because of books, but because of the anticipation bubbling in my chest.

And there she was, Maya. Sitting in the same seat, casually flipping through her notebook, her hair falling softly over her shoulder. She looked up as I approached, and that mischievous grin immediately appeared.

"Finally decided to join me, Daniel?" she asked, tilting her head playfully.

I tried to look casual. "I was early."

"Early?" she repeated, raising an eyebrow. "You're early now? Impressive."

I groaned inwardly. She always had a way of making me feel… small and flustered at the same time.

I slid into the seat beside her, carefully placing my bag down. She leaned slightly toward me, nudging my arm.

"You know," she whispered softly, "I was starting to worry you wouldn't show up."

I blinked. "Worry? For me?"

"Yes," she said, giving me a sideways glance, "for your seat partner duties."

I shook my head, hiding the small smile creeping onto my face. "I'll survive."

She smirked, clearly enjoying herself. "Oh, you'll survive… but I hope you're ready, today's lecture comes with extra… challenges."

I narrowed my eyes. "Challenges?"

"Yes," she said softly, leaning a little closer, her voice dropping just enough to make my heart skip a beat. "Like staying awake… and… keeping up with me."

I felt heat rise to my cheeks. "Keeping up with you?"

"You heard me," she said, brushing her notebook lightly against mine. "Seat partner responsibilities aren't easy, Daniel."

I sighed, already knowing I wasn't going to win this.

Just then, a few classmates whispered and glanced in our direction. I could feel their eyes, but Maya didn't seem to care. She nudged me gently again, whispering.....

"See? People are noticing… your secret charm."

I nearly choked. "Secret charm?"

She grinned. "Yes. You know… the one I told you about yesterday."

I groaned and tried to hide my embarrassment, but Maya just laughed softly, that melodic, teasing laugh that always seemed to make my chest warm.

The lecturer walked in, and the room quieted down, i tried to focus, but I couldn't stop stealing glances at her. She caught me looking and smiled mischievously. Then she whispered, just enough for me to hear

"Seat partner… pay attention… but don't forget to smile."

I blinked, as her words lingered in my mind long after she leaned back in her chair, and for the first time, I realized that… I couldn't wait for every moment we spent together in class, no matter how playful or teasing she got.

Because with Maya… even ordinary lectures felt like an adventure. The lecturer began explaining the topic on the board, his voice echoing through the quiet classroom.

Everyone bent over their notebooks, scribbling down notes. Everyone except Maya and I noticed almost immediately.

She was staring at the board for about five seconds… then staring at me.

Then back to the board, then back to me again. FFinally, she nudged my arm softly. I ignored it and there came another nudge.

I sighed quietly and whispered, "What?"

"I'm bored," she whispered back, resting her chin on her hand.

"You said that yesterday."

"And the day before."

"And you're still bored?"

She nodded seriously.

"Very bored."

I shook my head and continued writing my notes.

A few seconds later, my pen suddenly stopped moving, because Maya had taken it. Again and I turned slowly.

"You just stole my pen."

She didn't even look guilty.

"I borrowed it."

"You always say that."

"Because it's true."

I leaned closer and whispered, "Then what are you writing with?"

She proudly lifted another pen from her bag.

"I came prepared today."

I blinked.

"So why take mine?"

She shrugged casually. "I like this one."

I stared at her.

"You're unbelievable."

She grinned. "But you still sit beside me every day."

I couldn't argue with that. A few minutes later, while I was focused on writing, I suddenly felt something slide across my notebook.

I looked down, it was a tiny drawing, a very bad drawing of a stick figure, with messy hair and glasses.

I turned slowly toward her.

"You drew this?"

She nodded proudly. "That's you."

"That looks nothing like me."

"It does," she insisted. "Look at the serious face."

I stared at the tiny stick figure again, then at her.

"You interrupted the lecture… to draw this?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

She leaned a little closer and whispered softly, "Because you looked too serious again."

I tried to stay annoyed, but a small smile betrayed me and she noticed immediately.

"There," she whispered happily. "Mission accomplished."

I shook my head. "You're a distraction."

"Correction," she whispered.

"A very cute distraction."

I almost dropped my pen, before I could respond, the lecturer suddenly turned toward our row.

"You two," he said, adjusting his glasses.

My heart nearly stopped.

"Yes, sir?" Maya replied calmly.

"Since you seem to be having a private conversation," he continued, "perhaps you would like to answer the question on the board."

The entire class turned to look at us and i froze and Maya slowly turned toward me and whispered,

"Seat partner…"

"What?" I whispered back nervously.

"You're the smart one."

My eyes widened. "You're not serious."

She smiled sweetly. "Oh, I'm very serious."

Then she raised her hand.

"Sir, Daniel knows the answer."

The classroom erupted with quiet laughter and i stared at her in shock.

"You betrayed me."

She whispered back innocently, "I helped you shine."

I slowly stood up, trying to ignore the smirk on her face and as I walked toward the board…

I realized something.... being Maya's seat partner was definitely dangerous, but somehow… i still wouldn't trade that seat for anything.

I walked back to my seat after answering the lecturer's question, trying to ignore the quiet laughter still lingering in the classroom.

The moment I sat down, Maya leaned closer.

"So…" she whispered.

I turned slowly. "So?"

"You survived."

I stared at her. "You set me up."

She gasped dramatically.

"Set you up? Daniel, that hurts."

"You literally told the lecturer I knew the answer."

"Well… you did," she said innocently.

"That's not the point."

She tilted her head slightly, studying my face. "Are you angry?"

I sighed and opened my notebook again.

"No."

"You sound angry."

"I'm not."

She tapped my arm lightly.

"Seat partner?"

"What?"

"I might owe you an apology."

I raised an eyebrow. "You think?"

She nodded seriously.

"Yes."

Then she reached into her bag and for a moment I thought she was pulling out another pen to steal.

Instead, she placed something small on my notebook.

I looked down and saw a chocolate bar, and i blinked "What's this?"

"My apology."

I looked at her again. "You're bribing me."

She shrugged "It's working, isn't it?"

I tried to keep a straight face, but the corner of my mouth lifted slightly and she noticed immediately.

"There!" she whispered happily.

"You smiled again."

"You're unbelievable."

"But you accepted the chocolate," she said proudly.

I sighed and placed it inside my bag.

"Thank you."

She leaned back in her chair, clearly satisfied with herself. A few minutes later, the lecture ended.

Students began packing their bags and leaving the room, i stood up, slinging my bag over my shoulder, before I could take a step, Maya grabbed my sleeve.

"Wait."

I looked down at her.

"What now?"

She stood up quickly and brushed imaginary dust off her bag.

"You forgot something."

"I forgot something?"

"Yes."

"What?"

She smiled mischievously.

"You owe me snacks today."

I blinked "Excuse me?"

"You accepted my apology chocolate," she explained calmly.

"So?"

"So now it's your turn."

I shook my head slowly. "You planned this."

She grinned "Of course I did."

I sighed, "You're dangerous."

She stepped ahead of me toward the door.

"Come on, Daniel."

"Where?"

"Snack shop," she said over her shoulder.

I followed her out of the classroom, shaking my head, and as we walked down the hallway together, I realized something again.

Maya had a strange way of turning even the simplest things...

A lecture, a pen, a chocolate bar..... into moments I couldn't forget, and somehow…

I was starting to like those moments more than I probably should.

By the time we reached the snack shop, it was already crowded. Students gathered around the small tables, laughing and chatting while the vendor handed out snacks as fast as she could.

Maya walked confidently toward the counter like she owned the place.

"Aunty!" she called cheerfully. "Two meat pies and two drinks please."

Then she turned to look at me. "You're paying."

I sighed dramatically and reached for my wallet.

"You're enjoying this too much."

"Very much," she replied, smiling proudly.

When the snacks arrived, I handed over the money and grabbed the tray.

"Come on," she said, pointing toward an empty table under the tree.

We sat down, and for a moment the two of us just ate quietly, well… I ate quietly.

Maya, on the other hand, was watching me again.

"You're doing it again," she said.

I looked up.

"Doing what?"

"That serious face."

"This is my normal face."

"No it's not," she insisted. "Your normal face is the one where you're secretly trying not to smile."

I shook my head. "You imagine things."

She leaned forward slightly, resting her chin on her hand while studying me carefully.

"No," she said softly.

"I observe things."

I suddenly became very aware of how close she was, before I could say anything, a familiar voice called from behind us.

"Daniel!" And i turned.

Three of my classmates were standing nearby, all looking extremely amused and one of them grinned.

"So it's true."

My stomach sank, "What's true?"

"That you and Maya are always together now."

Maya didn't even look embarrassed, instead, she waved casually.

"Hello, fans."

The group laughed and one of them pointed at me.

"Bro, you look different these days."

"Different how?" I asked cautiously.

"Less serious," he replied.

Maya leaned closer to me and whispered,

"See? I told you."

I groaned quietly, "You're enjoying this."

"Very much," she whispered back.

Just then, as I reached for my drink, Maya reached for it at the same time and our hands touched.

Both of us froze for a second, her fingers brushed lightly against mine and i immediately pulled my hand back.

She blinked, clearly surprised for a moment, then… she smiled.

A slow, teasing smile.

"Oh?" she said softly.

"What?" I asked, trying to sound normal.

"Nothing," she replied, taking a sip of her drink, but her eyes were still watching me carefully, and I knew exactly what she had noticed.

My face was definitely red, she leaned closer again and whispered,

"You're blushing, seat partner."

"I am not."

"You are."

"I'm not."

She giggled quietly, "You're actually cute when you're embarrassed."

I covered my face for a second, "You're impossible."

She nudged my arm gently.

"But you still sit beside me every day."

I sighed, because once again.... she was right, and the worst part was, i didn't want to sit anywhere else.

The next lecture started, and Maya plopped down in her usual seat beside me, humming quietly to herself. I watched as she carefully took out her notebook and pen, but her eyelids were already drooping.

"Sleepy?" I whispered, leaning slightly toward her.

She blinked slowly. "Maybe a little," she admitted, her voice soft.

I glanced around the classroom. The lecturer was talking, and everyone else was focused on their notes, perfect.

"Careful," I whispered, nudging her gently. "You're dangerously close to toppling onto my shoulder."

She yawned, barely stifling it. "That wouldn't be so bad," she murmured softly, leaning just a tiny bit closer and I froze.

"Uh… seat partner rules," I whispered nervously.

She tilted her head, a sleepy grin forming. "Rules can be… flexible."

I swallowed hard, feeling my cheeks heat up, her head had just brushed against my arm, and the warmth… the closeness… it was dizzying.

I tried to focus on my notes, but I could feel her presence like a quiet, playful storm beside me. A small snore escaped her lips and i almost panicked.

"Uh… Maya?" I whispered softly.

She mumbled something that sounded suspiciously like my name and shifted a tiny bit closer.

I tried to pretend I wasn't completely aware that she was leaning toward me.

"Seat partner…" I whispered again, heart racing, she opened one eye slowly, smiled sleepily, and said, "Yes… you're the best seat partner."

My face definitely turned red and i cleared my throat, trying to act normal. "Thanks…"

She closed her eyes again, completely at ease, and I realized I was stuck.

Stuck in a moment where, her soft breathing was right next to me. Her tiny warmth made my heart race, and I didn't want her to move away. I glanced at her peaceful face, and a strange, happy flutter spread across my chest.

Maya… asleep, leaning slightly toward me, had somehow managed to make my entire day brighter, and I knew… being her seat partner wasn't just fun anymore.

It was… something I didn't want to stop, even if it meant blushing uncontrollably every single day.

By the time the lecture ended, Maya had woken up just slightly, blinking slowly and stretching like a cat.

I tried to act casual, but my face was still flushed from the earlier "almost on my shoulder" moment.

She noticed immediately.

"Seat partner?" she whispered, a teasing lilt in her voice.

"Yes?" I replied, trying to sound calm, though my hands were shaking slightly as I packed my notebook.

"You look funny," she said softly, grinning. "Like someone caught red handed."

"I… I wasn't doing anything," I stammered, pretending to button my bag.

"Sure," she said, raising an eyebrow. "Red cheeks don't lie."

I groaned quietly, lowering my head.

Maya leaned slightly closer, her playful grin turning into a small, soft smile.

"You know," she whispered, "you're adorable when you're flustered." And i froze.

"Adorable?" I repeated, my voice cracking slightly.

"Yes," she said, tilting her head. "You're very… cute."

I could feel the warmth rushing to my face again. She nudged my shoulder gently. "Don't worry. I'm not going to tell anyone… yet."

"Yet?" I asked nervously.

She winked. "You never know. Seat partner duties come with secrets."

I groaned inwardly, we walked out of the classroom together, Maya swinging her bag casually over her shoulder, completely at ease, while I tried to act like my heartbeat wasn't racing a mile a minute.

As we approached the snack shop again, she nudged me lightly.

"Race you to the counter?" she challenged.

"Are you serious?" I asked, already feeling flustered just at the thought.

"Very serious," she said, grinning widely. "Loser buys the next snack."

I hesitated for a moment. Then she gave me that look, the one that made me feel like I couldn't possibly say no.

So I ran and halfway there, she easily overtook me, laughing loudly.

"Seat partner always loses!" she announced proudly as she reached the counter first.

I huffed, laughing despite myself. "You're impossible!"

"And you love it," she said, sliding me a playful wink as the vendor handed over our snacks.

I groaned again, smiling, because I did..... i really did, and somehow… I knew that being her seat partner was about to get even more complicated and even more enjoyable.
