Chapter 8 - The Quiet Weight of Happiness

Seoul in early winter carried a peculiar stillness in the mornings.

The sky above the city often turned pale gray before the sun rose fully, and the distant towers of the financial district seemed almost ghostlike beneath the thin veil of morning fog drifting up from the river. Cars moved slowly along the highways, their headlights tracing quiet lines through the dim streets as the city gradually woke.

High above that restless landscape, inside the Kang family residence overlooking the capital, the day had already begun long before sunrise.

But only one person in the house was awake.

The Longest Nights

Han Sooah sat quietly in the nursery.

The room had been carefully designed months earlier, decorated with soft neutral colors and gentle lighting. Plush toys rested neatly along the shelves, and a small mobile hung above the crib where delicate shapes slowly rotated in the faint glow of a night lamp.

In her arms, Kang Minjun shifted softly.

The baby had woken nearly an hour ago.

His tiny fingers gripped the fabric of her sleeve while she rocked him slowly back and forth in the chair beside the crib.

"You're not sleepy tonight," she murmured quietly.

Minjun responded with a small, thoughtful noise that sounded suspiciously like disagreement.

Sooah smiled faintly.

Her eyes felt heavy.

She had gone to bed only three hours earlier.

But the exhaustion never appeared in her voice.

She simply adjusted the blanket around him and continued rocking gently.

Morning in the House

Downstairs, the house remained peaceful.

The staff had already begun their quiet routines—preparing breakfast, organizing the day's deliveries, arranging schedules—but they moved carefully so as not to disturb the family upstairs.

Around seven thirty, Daehyun woke up.

Which was impressive progress compared to his former habits.

He stretched dramatically beneath the blanket and stared at the ceiling for a moment, gathering the motivation to leave the warm comfort of the bed.

Then something occurred to him.

"Minjun."

He sat up immediately.

His hair stuck up wildly in every direction as he hurried toward the nursery down the hall.

When he pushed the door open, he froze slightly.

Sooah was sitting in the rocking chair.

Minjun had finally fallen asleep against her shoulder.

Her eyes were closed.

She had dozed off while holding him.

Daehyun smiled softly.

He stepped into the room quietly and gently lifted Minjun from her arms.

The baby made a small protesting noise but settled quickly against his father's chest.

Sooah stirred slightly.

"…Daehyun?"

"Morning."

She blinked slowly.

"What time is it?"

"Seven forty."

She frowned faintly.

"I need to get ready for work."

"You can sleep a little longer."

"It's fine."

She stood carefully and brushed her hair back.

"You take him for a while."

"Of course."

His Mornings with Minjun

Breakfast had become a much livelier event since Minjun arrived.

Daehyun sat at the dining table with the baby balanced comfortably in his arms.

Minjun stared at the animated colors flashing across the television screen while Daehyun enthusiastically explained things that the baby absolutely could not understand.

"See that dragon?"

Minjun blinked slowly.

"That's a boss monster."

Minjun responded with a thoughtful gurgle.

"I know, right?"

One of the housemaids passed through the dining room and paused briefly to watch the scene.

Daehyun held a spoon of mashed fruit near Minjun's mouth.

"Okay, airplane incoming."

The spoon made a gentle swooping motion.

Minjun opened his mouth obediently.

"Direct hit!"

The maid covered her mouth to hide a quiet laugh before continuing her work.

The Day Outside

Meanwhile, Sooah's day unfolded with its usual intensity.

The towering headquarters of Hanseong Holdings buzzed with activity as executives moved between meetings and analysts hurried through corridors carrying stacks of reports.

Inside one of the upper conference rooms, Sooah reviewed a complex acquisition proposal projected across a digital screen.

Her voice remained calm and steady.

"This valuation assumes growth projections that exceed current market indicators."

The executives shifted slightly.

One of them adjusted his glasses.

"You believe the projections are unrealistic?"

"I believe they are optimistic."

Silence settled over the room as the analysts quickly recalculated figures.

No one in the company questioned Sooah's judgment anymore.

She had proven herself repeatedly.

But what no one in that room could see was how heavy her eyelids felt.

Or how her body still carried the fatigue of interrupted sleep.

The Hidden Exhaustion

Later that afternoon, Sooah stood alone in her office reviewing documents.

Her assistant entered quietly.

"Director Han, your next meeting begins in ten minutes."

"Thank you."

The assistant hesitated slightly.

"…should I reschedule your evening conference call?"

"No."

"You've had a very long week."

"I'm fine."

Her tone remained gentle but final.

The assistant nodded and left the room.

Sooah leaned back slightly in her chair.

For a moment she closed her eyes.

Just a moment.

Then she straightened again and returned to work.

Afternoon at Home

Back at the Kang residence, Daehyun had discovered something extraordinary.

Minjun liked watching video games.

Very much.

The baby sat comfortably in a padded seat beside the couch while Daehyun played enthusiastically.

Bright lights flashed across the screen.

Characters dashed through digital landscapes.

Minjun watched with wide fascination.

"See that jump?" Daehyun said proudly.

Minjun squealed happily.

"That was perfect timing."

A few minutes later Minjun began waving his arms excitedly.

Daehyun grinned.

"Yeah, I know. That one was even better."

To an outside observer it might have seemed ridiculous.

But Daehyun treated the conversation with complete seriousness.

Evening Returns

By the time Sooah returned home that evening, the sky above Seoul had turned deep violet.

The house staff greeted her quietly.

She removed her coat and walked through the living room.

Daehyun was sitting on the floor.

Minjun was crawling enthusiastically across the rug while plastic toys were scattered everywhere.

Daehyun clapped dramatically.

"You're getting faster!"

Minjun responded with delighted laughter.

Sooah watched the scene quietly.

Her chest warmed slightly.

"Looks like someone had fun today."

Daehyun looked up.

"Hey."

Minjun immediately turned toward her voice.

"Mama!"

He wobbled toward her clumsily.

Sooah knelt down and lifted him into her arms.

"You missed me?"

Minjun hugged her neck.

The Night Routine

After dinner, Daehyun returned to his games while Sooah handled Minjun's bedtime routine.

Bath.

Warm pajamas.

Storybook.

Gentle rocking in the nursery chair.

The baby gradually drifted to sleep while she hummed softly.

Her voice was quiet.

Almost fragile.

By the time she placed him carefully in the crib, the house had already grown silent.

A Long Day Ends

Later that night, Sooah finally returned to the bedroom.

Daehyun was already asleep.

His game controller rested on the bedside table, and the television had switched automatically to its idle screen.

She changed quietly and slipped beneath the blanket.

Her body felt heavy.

Exhaustion pressed gently behind her eyes.

But when she looked toward the baby monitor glowing softly on the nightstand, she felt a quiet sense of peace.

Minjun slept soundly in his crib.

Daehyun breathed deeply beside her.

The house was calm.

Everything was exactly as it should be.

So she closed her eyes.

And prepared to wake again in just a few hours when Minjun cried in the night.

Because tomorrow would look exactly the same.

And she would carry it quietly.

Without saying a word.
