Chapter 2: Harmony High Transfer Student – Haruto Takahashi Arrives

The walk to school felt like stepping into every wholesome anime opening Haruto had ever binge-watched back in Kot Addu on dodgy Wi-Fi. Cherry blossoms swirled in lazy pink tornadoes, girls in crisp sailor uniforms pedaled past on pastel bicycles, and somewhere in the distance a light music club was already practicing an upbeat J-pop song that made his new heart thump with pure joy.

"Man, this is heaven on easy mode," he muttered under his breath, golden-amber eyes half-lidded in that signature lazy smirk. The black gakuran jacket hung just open enough to show a hint of toned chest, red tie deliberately loose. Every step screamed effortless cool. Back home, he'd owned the streets of Kot Addu with the same energy. Here? He already felt like the main character.

Harmony High rose ahead like a dream someone had designed specifically for him. The campus was massive yet cozy—glass-and-steel main building fused seamlessly with traditional wooden clubhouses, rooftop gardens spilling greenery, and even a small lake where a group of girls in camping club uniforms were setting up tiny tents for some early-morning "practice trip." He spotted what looked like an art club wing with huge windows, a music room echoing laughter, and rolling green fields that screamed countryside slice-of-life paradise. Non Non Biyori vibes on one side, My Dress-Up Darling energy on the other. Perfect fusion.

At the gate, a cheerful homeroom teacher in her late twenties—Ms. Aihara, according to the system pop-up only he could see—waved him over.

"Takahashi-kun! Right on time. You're the new transfer from… well, the records say 'special circumstances,' but we don't pry." She adjusted her glasses, cheeks faintly pink as she took in his face. "My, you're even more handsome than the photo. Class 2-A is going to lose their minds."

Haruto flashed the grin that had closed a thousand deals back home. "Just trying to fit in, Sensei. But if the girls here are as pretty as you, I might cause trouble." He winked.

Ms. Aihara laughed, flustered. "Oh you! Save that charm for your classmates." She led him through the bustling corridors, past lockers covered in cute stickers and club recruitment posters. Students stared. Whispers rippled like waves.

"Who's the new guy?"

"He looks like an idol."

"Transfer student? In the middle of the term? Lucky us…"

They reached Class 2-A. The door slid open. Thirty faces turned in unison.

Haruto stepped in, one hand in his pocket, the other giving a casual two-finger salute. "Yo. Haruto Takahashi. Just moved here. Looking forward to making memories with all of you."

The room exploded in soft chaos. Girls leaned forward. A busty blonde in the front row (he mentally tagged her as possible Fruits Basket material) blushed bright red. A quiet girl with lavender hints in her hair near the window glanced up shyly before hiding behind a book. Boys tried to look unimpressed but failed.

Ms. Aihara assigned him the empty seat by the window—prime real estate. As he passed rows of desks, he caught eye contact with a girl who screamed "cosplay queen": long orange hair tied in a high ponytail, school uniform somehow looking stylishly modified, curves that made the standard skirt and blouse look like high fashion. Marin Kitagawa. Even without the system labeling her, he knew. She met his gaze, eyes sparkling with immediate interest.

"New guy, huh?" she whispered as he sat down. "You've got main-character energy. I like it."

Haruto leaned over just enough. "Then let's make sure the story's worth reading, Kitagawa-san." He already knew her name—system perk or perfect playboy instinct? Didn't matter. Her cheeks went pink. Victory number one.

Class started normally: roll call, announcements about the upcoming school festival, club recruitment week. Haruto pretended to listen while his mind raced. This world was everything the system promised—peaceful, romantic, full of soft smiles and softer curves. But he remembered the pulse in his chest from earlier.

[Horror Rift detection window still active. Art Club room: 38 minutes remaining.]

He kept the smirk plastered on. No one would ever know. He'd handle whatever nightmare tried to crash this paradise later. Right now? He was just the cool new transfer student ready to collect hearts.

When the bell rang for first break, half the class already drifted toward his desk. Marin was first in line, sketchbook in hand, grinning like she'd found her new muse.

"Want a tour of the cosplay club after lunch, Takahashi-kun? I've got the perfect outfit in mind for you…"

Haruto's golden eyes gleamed. "Only if you model one for me first."

The girls around them squealed. The playboy from Kot Addu was officially in business.

And the first rift was ticking closer.
